What better way to end this decade than reviewing the ruined potential that is "Walking with Dinosaurs - The Movie".

Also dinosaurs didn’t have a concept of time and space and other things we humans now understand about nature and the universe! So instead of leafs they eat tree stars, instead of the sun they follow the great circle! Instead of the dinosaurs species names, they call each other by their features! That’s very creative, Don Bluth was a genius!

You really know it's going to be a bad dinosaur movie when the framing device focuses on a kid who doesn't like dinosaurs. The children in the theater saw the trailers. They went to watch it because they like dinosaurs. Why would they market the movie to kids who like dinosaurs, then make the audience avatar a kid who doesn't like dinosaurs? It's just a condescending piece of garbage made from the shards of an incredible passion project.

the gorgosaurus appearing during the forest fire thing make sense when considering modern bird behavior, predatory birds like kookaburras and kites will often appear during forest fires in search of the injured, dead and panicked

It makes sense for small predators that can fly away if things get to hairy and quickly catch an eat small prey. For a large, flightless predator though... Specially if said prey is a herbivorous animal of similar size which can't be neither quickly dispatched nor quickly eaten.

@miquelescribanoivars5049
@miquelescribanoivars5049 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lord_of_Snels I disagree. In the modern world most predators regardless of their size will, without fail, target newborn or very young calves of larger herbivores, often hunting more than they actually need and if possible synchronising their reproduction with this event. Dinosaur ecologies where different in that the relative size of the hatchlings was much smaller than newborn mammals of similar size. But they were also many, MANY more hatchlings due to Dinosaur's colonial nesting behavior. Is no different from seeing bears turning up on the Salmon's spawning migration. Notice how many paleoecosistems noted for their diverse Theropod faunas (for example Morrison, Dashanpu, Cloverly, La Huerguína, Kem Kem among others) tend to be ecosystems domimated by Sauropods? Because their reproductive strategy guaranteed abundant prey of the adequate size all year-round.
@Lord_of_Snels
@Lord_of_Snels 4 жыл бұрын
@@miquelescribanoivars5049 yes but gorgosaurus wasn't aligned with sauropod ecologies and had closer relationships with ceratopsians than anything else, by our understanding ceratopsians were maternal animals of relitavely large young unlike sauropods that have evidence of having mass amounts of smaller young that were alone from hatching, relying on sheer numbers. Gorgosaurus would use fires because scared ceratopsians would be separated from their easily captured, nutritious young and the said young could not rely on their only protection, their parents. there is absolutely no reason for a hungry gorgosaurus to not patrol near a fire for easy prey
@miquelescribanoivars5049
@miquelescribanoivars5049 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lord_of_Snels We know very little about Ceratopsid reproductive behavior or ontogeny. We know however that in many Dinosaur taxa herds were age segregated, juveniles stayed with their parent herd for some time, but would, eventually associate with individuals of similar age away from the adults. We know Protoceratops had this behavior and Triceratops may also had behaved that way: journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0113306 www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090324081431.htm www.researchgate.net/publication/236843516_Juvenile-Only_Clusters_and_Behaviour_of_the_Early_Cretaceous_Dinosaur_Psittacosaurus Even if we assume that adults take car of hatchlings for a while that would not had shielded juvenile individuals from predation, in modern ungulates, even in large agressive species like buffalos and bison which generally have only one nurturing-dependent calf, the survival rate for juveniles is under 30% throught their first year. Now take into account that the hatchlings of any Dinosaur were much smaller, didn't rely on being fed by their mothers for as long as the calves of large mammals and that most clutches would be well over a dozen of eggs and it becomes quite clear that this type of reproductive strategy was developed to counter a relatively high infant mortality rate. We have evidence this was the case for Maiasaura, which in spite of having altricial/semi-altricial hatchlings and other evidence for protracted parental care, suffered a very high infant mortality rate, with only 10% of all hatchlings surviving their first year: www.researchgate.net/publication/282348444_Maiasaura_a_model_organism_for_extinct_vertebrate_population_biology_A_large_sample_statistical_assessment_of_growth_dynamics_and_survivorship The little evidence we have of Ceratopsid reproductive strategy seems to point out to a similar behavior, with many offsprings but a relatively high early mortality rate. Also the whole point of this discussion was that an adult Pachyrhinosaurus =/= an easy prey, and that following bushfires for prey is much more typical behavior of relatively small, often flight capable predators.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about how bad the tiny arms joke is because it doesn't even make sense for the characters: the only reason there's jokes about the tiny arms is because of our humanocentric point of view where arms are big and important for us. These animals never evolved with a major need for arms, and a bird with fucking wings obviously wouldn't care about what your forelimbs are for. It would be like Patchi complaining to Alex he doesn't walk on all fours or something

But yea this movie looks great and beautiful, the animals look great (the main Gorgon being my personal favourite) and I was honestly excited from what I saw from the first trailer but then fricken Fox just had too come in and ruin everything, the hole experience pretty much got ruined because of those changes they did. And if they wanted to make the dinosaurs have character there's many ways they could have done it without making them speak. @@toyotawitha20mm35 Dinosaur is portrayed from the herd's perspective. It's not a documentary with an objective viewpoint.
@rockettbennett
@rockettbennett 8 ай бұрын
@@toyotawitha20mm35Honestly I don’t care what anyone says. Disneys Dinosaur is hella overrated. The character design for the herbivores (specifically Aladar) are ugly. It has a lot of dinosaur tropes like herbivores being defenseless and carnivores being scary soulless monsters. I legitimately felt bad for the carnos in that movie. I once said that it was worse than Speckles The Tarbosaurus but looking back I don’t think I have that opinion anymore. The fans only say it is underrated because not everyone constantly gushes about how “great” it is and they sometimes want to talk about other things. The CGI is also bad. The score is one of the few things that I genuinely really love about the movie. The voice acting is pretty good but nothing special. People only like it because of nostalgia. Let’s be honest. If Walking With Dinosaurs 3D was realized by Disney instead of Dinosaur (With all of the limitations from the early 2000s obviously) Everyone now would be saying that it is a masterpiece and underrated.

@@Jul-fu4yu I would say that the blood of Patches contained his life essence and it seeped into the tooth when it wounded Patches...but I'm not sure if the tooth even penetrated his hide (because it is a kid's movie and therefore no blood is allowed)...and now that i think about it than we would not know what happened after...so the correct answer is it does not have to make sense because reasons.
