Your meditation initiation is soooo disappointing. I was really hoping there was something else than religious non sense. And you pulled up non nonsensical spiritual explanations on trivial persistance of vision visual illusion. And then the same thing on sound. Is there really nothing more to meditation than trivial mind and senses game? Sorry if I am a bit blunt, but I had a lot of respect for the concept of meditation as something that could have some scientific evidence based to it, and then you come up with : when you close your eyes you can still see the picture you had been staring at for 2 minutes; when you breath the sound resemble the sound of waves.... Duh... Seriously ? That is all you have in your bag of tricks? Sounds and looks like optical and sound illusions chapter one for kids. Nothing is wrong about getting aware of the limitations and strange quirk of our sensory organs and how our brain interprets them; but do we really need to put "spiritual", "religious", or other fairy tales explanations on it? I thought humanity understanding of nature had gone beyond that in the last centuries. I guess superstitions are still well established in our societies, and it is still easier to get people"s attention by throwing magic dust at them. Too bad, mental health of young peoples spending time on digital medium was an interesting subject, it didn't had to be treated as a joke. Sorry if my English is approximative, I don't speak/write it very well, but I hope you get the point.

The most inspirational thing in this interview is that Charlie not only has no problem dropping a reference to Skynut, out of context, to a person he's just met in a semi-formal setting, but instead of backpedaling when Dr. K doesn't know what he's talking about, he follows up with a condensed lore briefing to bring him up to speed. I think the goal of therapy isnt to solve problems, its to provide insight into what you think might be a problem so you can work towards bettering it. Notice how they started off talking about nothing, but dr k stopped him in his tracks once he mentioned something peculiar about how his brain functions, but didnt say it was an issue until he gathered enough information from the client to confirm that it may be a toxic part of their mind (but then again still just suggested action instead of telling him straight up there might be a problem)

@Eriko. Oy There's definitely some corrections to be made in your comments, but using some interpretation, I can totally see your point and I agree completely. I think that people like him deserve all the best because you can't become a better human being than that. Of course, there is always room for improvement, but at one point this improvement doesn't really matter as much and you're fine the way you are. Personally, it's taking me all the effort I have to learning to think in a smarter way. Even when I wasn't an adult, I was always really keen on fixing a lot of my personality flaws. I often feel like it's going to be impossible for me to ever be fully happy with the kind of person I am, but logic dictates that repetitive attempts at something completely realistic that merely takes a lot of thinking and practise, will eventually result in success. I hope to one day be like Charlie in many aspects, and I believe that learning from these people is a very good thing to do. Up to now I've been very limited in many aspects as to what I was capable of, due to the inability to socialise and interact with others the way that I wanted, as I believe that interpersonal and intrapersonal interactions are the two fundamental skills to being able to develop as a human being. Now starting Uni this will be important to learn and my interactions will be more worthwhile than what they were like prior to that.

@@divineoverhand5307 hey, maybe I’m wrong (I consider being incorrect to be one of my skills), but I have heard many people who are confident but not arrogant graciously accept compliments. It’s not an easy skill to learn though. But when every single compliment is deflected rather than accepted I have found that it often says something about a person’s opinion of themselves. But like I said, I could be wrong. Also I believe Dr. K picked up on this, which is why later in the interview when Charlie deflects the compliment K pushes further to get him to accept it.

I’ve never really done this type of meditation before… previously I had done the ones where someone guides you by saying “focus on your breathing, focus on the feeling of sitting/laying down, focus on what you can hear”, etc, but this was so interesting. The point about it being a practice at being able to focus your attention on what you want to actually made meditation make so much more sense, I used to just view it as a calming mechanism, but it’s literally a practice/training for everyday life… also this whole conversation was really interesting, loved seeing it! Charlie and you both are so amazing! Glad to have good influencers like you to give me direction to take my self improvement journey whenever I’m unsure or lost :)

1:32:30 Interestingly enough, I feel like Charlie arrives at a solution to Dr. K's question without even realizing it. I think there are massive lapses in education in the world of the Internet and social/parasocial relationships. This would be a really interesting series of conversations to approach because I can empathize with the confusion someone might feel in not recognizing the differences, especially in the age of social media. This is especially true given the fact that many people have grown up, or are currently growing up, with such constant exposure to it that they wouldn't even realize there is a difference to begin with. Food for thought perhaps!

13:40 Symptoms of addiction. 1) Compulsion to do it 2) Preoccupied about it 3) Taking over other aspects of life I realized that I'm addicted to my work. I love doing what I do, so much to the extent that it's become a large part of my lifestyle. But it has lead me to ignore other parts of my life such as family, socialization and health which I think counts as impairment of function. It's not very explicit, because from a 3rd person pov, I'm earning money and living a generally normal life, but it is taking over other parts of my life for sure. However idk if I'm prepared to change it rn. I'm still at a pre-contemplative stage I think. I like this addiction - I see it might be bad in the long run, but for now it's cool for me.
@Joeyratatouille4 жыл бұрын
For me gambling became an addiction when I couldn't quit. It got so bad and eventually climaxed when I lost a huge amount of money that I absolutely could not afford to lose at the time. I remember realizing why people would commit suicide after losing big at casinos and had some of the most serious suicidal moments of my life. I was so addicted though, the next day I was right back at it trying to win back what I had lost.

The issue with toxicity isn't that people enjoy being mad on social media it is that social media manipulates the content you see to make you upset because that is what causes you to engage with the platform more.
@m4r1o14810 ай бұрын
That sounds like a negative side effect of algorithm-drive social media feeds. I don't engage with things that make me angry because I often find that there is no point in me engaging with it, so my social media feeds don't often provide content that makes me angry. There are obviously exceptions and that would be due to the fact that those types of posts absolutely get a ton of attention, so it's bound to appear for me every once in a while. My point is that, if people were a little more mindful of their emotions and what they're taking away from the content they consume, social media might be a more positive outlet for people. I would also like to point out that there is a difference between engaging with content that makes you angry vs engaging with content you disagree with. Social media could be so much more than what it is, but in my experience, most people don't seem interested in being constructive.

Feeling guilt for self-indulgence is something that can wear down on a person’s mental health, for sure. Yet, in most people, it’s a very positive trait to develop. The ability to set boundaries for your own indulgences means an ability to exercise a level of self-control over your actions. There’s an interesting phenomenon: a person with a smoking addiction has an expected lifespan shorter than average. Pretty expected. But, a person who has quit a smoking addiction has an expected lifespan longer than average. It’s like a lifestyle strategy, getting guilt tripped against your own desires. I always want to make friends with these kinds of people, but of course there are drawbacks
@dualscreen87894 жыл бұрын
@@kennethyee5161 I've... Never though about it like that. What would be the drawbacks?
@kennethyee51614 жыл бұрын
@@dualscreen8789 I meant drawbacks as a strategy, and not as a friend (I worded it wrong) Addiction and restriction are two sides of the same coin. To recognize something addictive as being indulgent and to be able to restrict yourself from it is generally a good trait. The drawback is that you might over-restrict yourself, even on things that may not be good to restrict. It's like addiction, but the other way around. You'll see this happen a lot in [trigger warning] eating disorders. Though the behaviors can vary wildly, people with these disorders may find a lot in common with their struggles. People that tend to restrict themselves may generally have good outcomes with their behavior, but it might not always mean a healthy relationship with their desires. The psychology of a person with a healthy relationship with food and smoking is one where they don't feel such extremely addictive/restrictive impulses in the first place.
