Breaking News: George R.R. Martin Does It Again | The Winds of Winter is Doomed?

Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire video. In this video, I will be talking about George R.R. Martin's new NotABlog update. According to George R.R. Martin, HBO is preparing to film their new Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This new series will chronicle the life and adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon "Egg" Targaryen. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be based on George R.R. Martin's three Dunk & Egg novellas, The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and the Mystery Knight. As of right now, this story doesn't have an ending. George said he needs to write roughly 7-12 more novellas before this story is finished. This is a major issue because HBO has already started making A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, before George has written it's ending. He said he will not start writing anymore Dunk & Egg novellas until he's finished the Winds of Winter. This might not happen anytime soon, considering he's been writing the Winds of Winter for over a decade. This might be Game of Thrones all over again. A Knight of the Seven Kingdom's writers might catch up to George before he's ready to start writing more novellas. What will they do if that happens? Will he delay the Winds of Winter even longer, or will he allow the show's writers to create his ending again?

Just imagine it, the invasion of the dead in our own world also ushers in the armies of the dead in ASOIAF. This is one of the most stunning meta-narratives in the history of fiction, but you all lack the imagination and patience to appreciate what George is doing.

I hope his heirs follow Robert Jordan's widow's example and find another Brandon Sanderson to finish the series, but it's unlikely to turn out as well as Wheel of Time. When he realized he was likely to died of an altra-rare blood disease before he could finish it, Jordan reportedly started mapping out the rest of the series, prepared a slew of notes, and wrote key scenes, including the final chapter of the series. He did all of that while actively dying. I seriously doubt GRRM will do the same for ASOIAF because that would require he have a clue where the series is going and how it ends. Hopefully he has enough of his world building documented that someone can step in and at least create a plausible ending, even if it isn't GRRM's ending.

Back then, when I was a devout member of the German ASoIaF-community and we were in London to see George (I think it was 2012?), he talked about writing Dunk and Egg up to the North to Winterfell and the two of them being in Dorne. I believe he skipped Dorne but Winterfell and the Starks could still be a possibility.

He’s said many times he pinned himself into a corner with how to end game of thrones that he truly doesn’t know what to write to tie it the ending. The fact that he was doing side story writing is because he has writers block on the main story. He’s old fat and rich who hasn’t finished writing the next book over the last 15 or whatever years. I genuinely think he doesn't know HOW to finish a song of ice and fire and I think it's because he's created to many plotlines and instead of closing them his mind just keeps making more. I once read somewhere that a dream of spring could actually end up being 2 books. He's right when he says he's like a gardener, he's a gardener with an infinite amount of land that he keeps expanding into instead of fencing it and being like now I have to actually tend to the garden that I've already created. I definitely think that both the show and book fan's strong reaction to the ending of GOT also has something to do with him being unable to conclude his story because amongst all those lies there were some specks of truth spinkled in (e.g. Bran becomes king). Also hink him waiting this long has added to the pressure because how much fans expect - the fact that there are fan theories that have resulted in people making videos spanning 20+ hours tells you that much. So in conclusion, what's keeping him from finishing the books? 1. wanting to expand the plot when now is the time to bring it all together 2. too much ground to cover in terms of addressing and concluding already existing plotlines 3. increased expectation/ hype from the fandom on the actual ending of the books from having to wait 10+ years leading to added pressure. I think Winds of Winter is his big hurdle, if he's able to actually finish it and put it out there (and people like it) then I think he will be able to write spring faster. As a procrastinator myself, there's a sort of guilt that comes from delaying the work you knew had to be finished already which then results in you procrastinating even more.

Completely agree. People forget that GRRM himself said when he writes, he doesn’t do an ending because it makes him lose interest and creative flow because he ends up restricting his creative process to the point that he stops writing. He gave GOT his ending and now has backed himself into a corner as he saw the backlash and can’t change it without causing contractual issues with HBO as he has promised that the book ending will be the same as the show. I suspect he is dragging his feet because he hopes the vitriol will die down by the time his last book comes out and he can figure out how to tweak things to make the ending more palatable.

I've tried reading every other GRR story besides Thrones. Including Sworn Sword and the rest of them. Some are fair, some are awful, none of them are in the same class as Thrones by a long shot. Everything he's written besides song of ice and fire is pure mediocrity. When you develop them into a TV show, the TV show is pure mediocrity. HOT D was a fair effort but who literally GAF about Targaryens? Their story is not interesting, except for the dragons, it's completely forgettable.

I don't understand apologists for him. Dissenting opinions say he doesn't owe us anything. Yet he sold us books as a series and even mentioned how many there'd be. It's not like this came out of the blue, he's been writing GoT since 1991. But sure, we're the annoying mosquitoes as we watch from the outside as he parades TV and film projects. An entire fanbase bought his books and it's not unreasonable to expect you finish the series. Sorry, I don't know many writers with big deals that get away with stalling for a decade on a deliverable. It doesn't matter at this point. GoT isn't a priority to Goerge and let's not pretend otherwise. Thanks for the great books George but you could have done more.

But as I have been saying forever, just compile all your notes and they can be released posthumously so the fans can pour over them and glean some measure of an ending for what WOULD have been the greatest fantasy series ever written. We know of at least 2 novellas that exist in some form: The Village Hero which is likely to be about events of Pennytree & how it became a royal fief. It exists on the border of Stone Hedge & Raventree hall lands for context (Bracken & Blackwood disputed area). The other is The She Wolves of Winterfell - a working title but dealing with a succession crisis in the North when multiple Stark lords have died in rapid succession.

We got the high points already. Bran is the king. Sansa is Queen in the North. Jon is a free man. Daenerys goes mad and dies. Lannisters are dead, save Tyrion who is the Hand. Greyjoys are dead. Arya is... somewhere, being Arya. The Unsullied left, Drogon left. There is a Prince of Dorne, probably Manfrey Martell but who knows? The rest is gravy, because everyone else either dies or is not that relevant.

The best, and most GRRM thing, that could happen is that he’s already written WoW and ADoS and they’ll be published posthumously to avoid any backlash, because they diverge significantly from the TV show.

It’s rather apparent that George has lost his fastball in writing and is not truly capable of producing further meaningful fiction. There is no shame in growing old. An honourable exit strategy for ASOIAF would be to recruit a capable co-author who can flesh out the final volumes with his input and under his guidance while he is still alive. George: do you have the humility and compassion for your fans to do this?

The man is in his mid 70s and is horrifyingly obese. People this obese rarely even get to the age he is already at, it is incredibly unlikely that he will make it through the next 5 years, his health is almost guaranteed to decline further to prevent him from writing. Not that he wants to finish the story anyway, he has seen how much people hated the ending, no way for him to fulfill expectations properly so his plan likely is to just outrun the clock on it all and leave people with the assumption that he would have delivered something better than the TV show.

I’m convinced that he’ll never finish ASOIAF because then it’ll go down in history as his “great unfinished work” and he doesn’t risk fumbling the ending and leaving people disappointed.

Honestly it seems like the ending of Game of Thrones show was HIS ending and seeing the backlash the show got caused him to almost not even want to finish the story or he has to rewrite a good chunk of it to change it

I honestly can’t believe that HBO is making two more Series based on incomplete book series by GRRM, if I was the HBO executive in charge of studio production, I would tell George that we will be happy to green light pretty much any series he wants, once said series of novels is finished.

Literally the only way to get his nose down on that WoW grindstone is to just ignore all of these other bells and whistles he's churning out. He's become a hapless stage magician who never ever gets to sawing the lady in half. GIVE UP ON HIM - and just maybe it'll relight his fire for your attention enough that we'll actually get the book before he goes manboobs up. It's up to us.

Perhaps his books 6 and 7 are nearly along the line as the series ending. And GRRM saw how people hated hated that. I hope I'm wrong and some days we'd have the complete series, whether by George or another author.

Sometimes when you're working on something and get into a rut, working on something else for a while helps you when you go back to the first project. Maybe he should work on some Dunk and Egg novellas to give his mind a break from Winds of Winter and when he goes back he might see the path he needs to take.

It’s not confirmed every season will be only 6 episodes. Just season 1. Season 2 could increase it to 8 episodes if they choose to do so.

I don't think that we are going to see anything new until after his death and his estate has a chance to heavily edit the mountains of Westeros expansion that he's been writing for fifteen years. If he forbids his estate to do such, and wants all unfinished work destroyed, then this will be it. I don't know what happened to him, but at least he gave us the world of GoT and all that it holds. I hope that it can be allowed to flourish in future works, but I don't know.
