Thanks for the video. I'm one-week post-op anterior hip surgery. The hip feels great, but my thigh is swollen, bruised & painful. Ice & doing my prescribed exercises are helping. Walking helps, too. It's frustrating, but I keep telling myself, “Baby steps.” Good luck to everyone

I had a total knee replacement at 11:00 am and I walked out of the Hospital at around 6:30 Pm with no pain. It took about a month to get back to normal walking for me. I was told that a hip is less painful and recovery is faster, I hope so because in November I'm going in for hip surgery.

I really enjoy your videos especially now that 9 days ago I had a total knee replacement on my right knee.. I am a 81 year old woman in fairly good health. My surgeon prescribed pre-op PT which I did 3 weeks prior to surgery. After surgery I was kept in the hospital for an additional day because some of my blood levels were low. I was given Oxycodon and Tylenol post surgery. My discharge instruction said to stop the Oxy after 5 days. I found this odd because you always say use your pain meds. After discharge I did find the Oxy was causing confusion, but great sleep. So I switched to Tylenol. No comparison. Your video,I'm watching now focuses on swelling. My leg has swollen quite a bit. And it is hard. I take the dressing off tomorrow. I am doing PT. The therapist commented on the swelling last week but didn't seems concerned. Should the leg feel hard. I would appreciate a reply. I find it hard to contact my doctor without a direct phone number. You are stuck with a 1-800 number and you hear nothing back for several hours. You guys are great. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

I had bilateral total knee replacements in both knees. I am 45. I had one in Aug 2019 that went fairly well in terms of rehab, swelling & mobility. I had the other Dec 31 2019 about 6 weeks ago , developed a hematoma and my recovery & swelling has been very very difficult. I am on disability currently ( I am a registered nurse) .. I am doing everything you guys are suggesting and the swelling in my right knee is preventing me from doing PT:(. I feel as though I am going backwards instead of forwards. How long does it truly take to recover from two bilateral knee replacements done within 6 months of each other? Maybe I have unrealistic expectations. I used to be an athlete .. incredibly active and this is depressing. I do love watching your videos.. your humor is everything and makes me smile when I don’t want to.

I begun with some light workout but I still have swelling around knee cap but the doctor said that it is minimal… but it prevents me from bending my knee more or excersise more . I have pain around knee cap and in upper side of knee cap and not in the fractured area.. when can I expect swelling to go off or what can I do to reduce it ?7… I have fealing that my knee is stiff due to swelling and not because of a cast … What to do?

Compression stockings really work. There are techniques that make it easier to put on. I'm sure there is a KZbin video on it. Also, they have some that are 'silkier' than most which make applying them even easier. Of course if a higher weight is prescribed than you may not have as many options as far as the material(?) but 15-20 weight I believe can be purchased without a prescription.

Hi Lorraine. Patients that have had prior vein issues will often have more swelling post-operatively. You would likely require slightly more prolonged anti-coagulation after surgery and would definitely benefit from stockings if you can tolerate them. Hope that helps. We are in Ontario, Canada. Hey Docs, like your videos. I was searching for info on swelling in the non-operated leg. My RTHR, 10 days ago, was textbook and recovery is steady and moving right along, especially since my first visit with the PT last week. At that time, my right leg was a blimp, which was very uncomfortable and made it difficult to assess my ROM. She pressed her thumb into the shin muscle of my left leg and said it also had edema, which she said was very unusual. This was on a Friday, so she said to go in to see the doctor on Monday if it didn't get better. She asked me what my typical day was like and realized that I was spending WAY too much time on my feet! She told me to go for my short walks several times a day and do my exercises, but otherwise lie down with my legs elevated and use ice. Even while lying down on the physio bed for a few minutes, the left leg swelling improved. I did my own research when I got home and realized that not only was I on my feet too much but I also have quite a bit of added salt in my diet. Also, I'd been supplementing my painkillers with 600 mg of ibuprofen four times a day, which I now understand also contributes to water and salt retention. I've just about weaned myself off of the ibuprofen completely and I've reduced the salt in my diet considerably over the last few days. The day after I saw my physiotherapist the edema in my left leg was totally gone and the swelling in my right leg was reduced a lot. As far as my heart goes, I did have an ECG just before the operation and it checked out fine. I do have a heart murmur and I get it checked every couple of years. Perhaps this partially explains the swelling in the other leg? I have been playing soccer with the other old guys for the past seven years, so my heart has been strong enough to keep the blood flowing, even while running to exhaustion. LOL Cheers Ross

@@TalkingWithDocs hi..thought it might be useful to someone to now mention re leg oedema... no doctor, nurse, care worker or any medical professional in 5years had mentioned something I had come across on KZbin.. its simple when you think about it but no one had...when laying in bed, elevate the legs..so for the past few days this is what I've got my mum to do..by placing a few cushions under her mattress.. its literally like a miracle..her ballooned feet were so swollen her toes looked like they were disappearing.. but gradually day by day her instep was starting to re appear again...like a balloon deflating. Her hip surgery side has still got a way to go, I guess because of surgery swelling on top of oedema but I'm hoping this side should eventually follow the deflating side.

Hello Docs, my wife had anterior/posterior lumbar fusion of L4 and L5 2 months ago. The day after surgery she had a swollen, red hot foot and ankle when they got her out of bed. She has been checked twice for blood clots which were clear. In the morning it seems better and as the day goes, the warmer it gets (as she’s using it). Is this normal or is she on the path for crps which has been mentioned to her. There is no physical pain in the foot, just sensory. Thanks so much!
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. Sorry to hear this. It is hard to say. If she has surgery in the front and back may be related the blood vessels that supply that leg as they are in abs around the surgery site. CRPS would be uncommon but possible. If that is a concern make sure to use lots of sensory contact and try to get in front of it. And if you have ongoing concerns get checked out again. Best of luck. I can't help but wonder if I should go to a different surgeon than the one I had for my ankle and knee. It was only a convenience to return to the same surgeon but after he told me I need to be on the list for hip replacement I start to think "Why did he wait so late to tell me that?" I've been living with impaired mobility, pain, some days agony, going on two years. Naturally, I've got thoughts of "Is he enjoying with glee to make me wait knowing I'm suffering?" Given, my neighbour fell and immediately got his new hip. He did not go through any longterm pain, only short term, before they did his surgery in an emergency situation. Question: Should I try to fall and break my hip?
@TalkingWithDocs

Hi Brigid. So no. You definitely should not break your hip. It is possible that while treating your knee and ankle the hip was overlooked. Having said that you need to be comfortable with your surgeon so you can always go to someone else. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

I'm heading for a total knee on March 10th. I was wondering if the surgical cement ever escapes and enters the actual joint and prevents it from bending? Also, how do you determine the size of knee joint to put in? I've heard a couple scary stories about the wrong size used. YIKES!
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Janet. So while the cement is curing we remove the excess cement. Theoretically some could break off but that would be extremely rare. Regarding sizing, we template xrays ahead of time to estimate the size and then resize during the procedure. We have lots of every size on the shelf at the time of surgery. Sometimes knees are put in that may seem too large but this was likely in an effort by the surgeon to prevent a fracture of the femur. It can happen however. Thanks for watching and for subscribing if you did.

Ok, so swelling and bruising is going to be quite significant in a posterior THR approach. Now I'm an older female so lucky me I get to bruise worse! A simple canula insertion for a minor procedure left a 8" x 2" wide bruise on my forearm that took 3 weeks to go away. So - be real with me, how bad and how BIG is the bruising/swelling likely to be on my backside and lower leg (and anywhere else) post op? Would taking arnica and bromelain be helpful? Does topical arnica gel help reduce surface bruising? Thanks guys, my surgeon and my surgical 'navigator' at the clinic are too busy in the new Covid world to answer my questions.

Try putting a plastic bag, over your foot, then the stockings on over the bag. When the stocking is on up over the ankle, pull the plastic bag out of the open toe of the TED hose. You can try dusting your feet with powder or corn starch to help glide the hose on. Try inserting both hands, into the toe foot area, and open your hands wider, insert your foot, tug the hose up and over your heel. Hopefully post op, you will have some help!
