Yes, before VAR, we discussed hand balls, yes we discussed offsides, yes we discussed penalties. The game changed when replays were available and the population at large could see when the on field officials got something wrong. THe logical question was - if the TV can know in seconds why can't the refs. VAR hasn't changed the game - its changed how we complain about the decisions.

And using human eyeball mk1 in realtime with no replay is tough for things that are easy with slow motion replay and 5 different angles. Get a couple of friends, do an officiating course. Ref and run the line for a match, get six people to video the match on their phones, one each end and one half way in each half, each side. Now watch them back in both dressing rooms. Good luck with your hospital stay.

I like Simon and he's nearly 90-95% right most of the time, but Ange is channeling the frustration of the majority of fans. I've always argued that if you roll the frame one millisecond forward or backwards you get two different calls. There's NO WAY of knowing the precise moment of ball impact. When this is the case, the call should ALWAYS be in favor of the attacker. And as mentioned, this handball shet is infuriating... like PSR, VAR isn't fit for purpose because the parameters they add to it are shite.

Goal line technology is good. VAR doesn’t work for offside - just change the rule so that there has to be a gap between the attacker and defender for a real offside. The handball rule is terrible…it’s become so convoluted that players don’t understand it and referees are allowing handball leading to goals.

A NFL game consists of multiple interruptions, the game is so much chopped play after play, drive after drive. That's why it takes 4 hours to from start to finish. A football (european) game relies mostly on the flow of play. So comparing NFL to the Premier League is comparing apples to oranges.

They are following the Amercican system/style where announcements are made in NFL and NHL! If football and FIFA wants to use technology, why not use it for timing of 90 minutes of the whole game instead of relying on the referee's watch which is subjective. Why not put on the time on the scoreboard and let it countdown from 45 minutes down to zero? Whenever the referee blows for a foul, the clock stops. When play resumes, the clock ticks down again. Then there will be no arguing or disagreements about the amount of time added or not added in injury extra time. OR

Also the coaches will be very aware and monitoring and reminding the players of the time left. If not, a sorta siren to sound off the remaining last minute could be introduced or the stadium announcer announce that 1 min is left etc etc

Football is worse now than it has ever been, I remember being a kid in the 90's and I couldn't wait to get home from school and watch the Monday night Football with my dad whoever was playing. Even if it was some rubbish like Wimbledon v Southampton I still couldn't wait to watch it. Football was played by men, it was a contact sport, they didn't fall over at every opportunity to get free kicks and penalties, they weren't allowed to stand in offside position and let the ball go through their legs and say "I wasn't interfering". As Brian clough said "if your not interfering what are you doing on the pitch?" Var has to go, all it is is a tool to allow the authorities to get the winners and results they want when they get the chance to manipulate them. Yes referees are in that authoritive position, we have seen that where they have 2 incidents that are exactly the same and they give to opposite decisions depending on the badge on the shirt. The only way it can be shown to the world how corrupt it is is to have the replays shown on a big screen in the stadium and the whole conversation played out live in real time. Then they will have to be whiter than white. The fact is people say how difficult it is to referee Football and as the man in the middle yes that would be tough but as a referee who apparently knows the rules and how to implement them it is not that difficult when you have a screen in front showing you pretty much any angle you want and whatever speed you want you shouldn't be making mistakes. But for them to just say 'it's an honest mistake" is ridiculous. It's either incompetence or cheating. Either way that individual should have no place refereeing professionally

If we have TV then we must have VAR. From the moment TV started with all the replays and all the angles every mistake was exposed to the world. It's a necessary evil. Read the rules.... it was the correct decision....the ref called play on... advantage to Liverpool an the law states and the direction given to the referees is.. if the advantage is allowed, play continues to the advantage and the ball does not go out he is not required to return to book the player. Unless the foul was deemed cynical.... Bergvall's challenge was naive and over ambitious but hardly cynical unlike the missed 'raking of Solanko's calf by Van Dyke which was also missed.... so Karma I guess.
