European Portuguese Practical Tips -- Do you love ice cream? Do you know how to order one in Portuguese? Do all the sizes, flavours and extra ingredients leave you confused? Very cool and encouraging video! Today while at the Corte Ingles in Lisbon, I spoke to the cashier in Portuguese. However while paying, I asked my partner in English for an extra 50 centimos and the the cashier spoke to us in English. I responded in Portuguese. She said then in English, " Your Portuguese is good, I understand everything you said." So that is helpful too when we get some positive feedback. It can be a little scary in some situations to speak in the language you are learning but you do have to get past the fear and go for it!

Our brain switch to English because we ear it so much but most of us don't get the chance to speak it. So... it's like the brain sees the opportunity and grabs it The other thing is that we are afraid of miscommunication... once I was talking to an Irish guy that was learning Portuguese and I made the effort of not switching to English ( I controlled myself :) ) a month later a saw him again and was surprised because I though he was going to leave in 3 days, turns out he had arrived in 3 days. In another situation I was talking in English to a German but he kept on replying to me in Portuguese, so I got to a point I realized "ok this guy knows enough, I give up" from that moment I have only talked with him in Portuguese. So sometimes... just keep on talking in Portuguese

Hi Liz, I love your Portuguese videos on KZbin. They are really helpful. As an English woman who spent almost 13 years living in Andalucia, Spain, but who now lives in Romania, I can empathize with Nick Robinson's comments. Spanish comes more easily than Romanian to me. I find the Slavic influence difficult, though there are some similarities with Spanish, which helps. My husband is Romania but, as I am most definitely not fluent in the language and he can't speak English, we speak to each other in Spanish most of the time. Nick understands alot of Portuguese but sometimes has complete blocks, and it's the same for me. I can speak and understand some Romanian but I find it easier to read, depending on the text. Sometimes I completely dry up, as if I've never learned anything, which is frustrating and embarrassing. I've actually worked hard on my studies. I'm learning Portuguese in case we move there when we retire. It helps that I speak Spanish but, as you know, the pronunciation is quite different and often the words are too. In any case, thanks, once again, for producing these videos. I wish you lots of luck in your endeavors 😊.

Great video. I think its great when English speakers speak another language. I think that so many people learn English that there is no reason for an English speaker to learn another language. I enjoy learning other languages and speaking to people in their native language. Even if it is just good bye or hello.

I think in some ways, being a native English speaker has a bit of a disadvantage. If an anglophone accent is detected, they have a tendency to switch to English. This happens in France and maybe Italy too.

O meu sabor favorito é "butterscotch". DeepL mostra 'caramelo' mas não tenho certeza se está certo.

Em português não há tradução para esse sabor pois o nome original é inglês, há diferença de sabor. Caramelo é feito com açucar granolado e pode ter uma variedade de ingredientes como natas, butterscotch com açucar mascavado e manteiga. A diferença dos açucares muda bastante o sabor final. Butterscotch é habitualmente uma especialidade pois não é um sabor muito comum por cá, quando o vejo chama-se mesmo butterscotch. O perfil de sabor na minha opinião aproximar-se-ia mais de caramelo salgado do que de caramelo "normal".

Excellent question. This is a difficult one to explain in a short space of time but basically you can use que or qual depending on the structure of the sentence. But I usually think of it as que + noun OR qual + verb. The simple way to put it is "que sabores tem" but "quais são os sabores que tem" is much more eloquent. your way of thinking is on the right track.

Apenas achei interessante porque a pessoa está cá há tanto tempo, o que parece demonstrar que o assunto é realmente difícil. Para quem está a ler este comentário e não é nativo português, penso que esta troca de género é mais ou menos equivalente (aos ouvidos de um nativo) como por exemplo dizer "the dinner is in the table", em vez de "the dinner is on the table". É perfeitamente compreensível mas para os ouvidos de um nativo soa estranho.
