For those of you who don’t know what to do after 한글, keep learning 한글! Learn about 받침, learn about double 받침, learn about consonant assimilation. I legit spent 2 months practicing my reading so I could feel more comfortable with the sounds and how they go together. Of course, you can do it in less time, no need to be as intense as I am, but really if you practice your reading you will find grammar structures and start noticing particles bc you see them repeat themselves in what you read. From there you can start looking up their meaning and how they work, and also will be able to know if it’s something you can learn at your level or maybe is a better idea to leave it for later. Write down the verbs you find in what you read! In what tense are they? What particles they have at the end? How does the verb interacts with the words after it? Is it a pattern that you can learn? Can you replicate the structure with another verb? There is so much to learn you guys, PLEASE DON’T GIVE UP!

@@juelleroach9501Once you find your own pace is so much fun! Try different things. Try translating songs, write down the verbs, write down the new vocab, make your own sentences with them. Listen to podcasts, just read lyrics and don’t write down anything if you don’t want to. Stick to one word and create sentences only with it, look for several KZbin channels or websites. One topic will take you to the other, there is no need to stick to only one resource, and is better (at least for me) to change they way you study so you don’t get bored. Consistency is key! Even if you only have the energy to read 5min or learn 1 word per day that is still something! 💙. Good luck! 🥺

@@juelleroach9501 Also get Anki and a big deck of a few thousand words and start practicing that every day :) a good next step after hangeul is: vocab, grammar and input. Anki covers (some of) the vocab. You can use TTMIK and Howtostudykorean to practice grammar, and as for input, start watching shows, cartoons, listening to songs, beginner podcasts, etc. in Korean. I haven't never lost interest in learning Korean, I just have times when I'm more motivated or less motivated. My biggest hurdles are finding a way to learn vocabulary, I dont do well with just basic flash cards. My other hurdle is speaking, I need to get over my shyness and just speak and not worry about mistakes ❤

I'm in the same boat as you in some regards, mostly the shyness and fear of mistakes. One thing that helps me on most of this though is writing what I can in Korean, and the rest in English. Then, after I finish writing it, I go back to the English parts and try to find how to express it in Korean. Given grammar and all that it may not flow, especially with more complex thoughts, but it helps build up the vocab. As for speaking and stuff, it's literally just a matter of doing it. Which I get is easier said than done, but I think Yeji made a great point in that instead of thinking of the results, think of the consistency.

@@erichansen9669 I actually just started a Korean journal and my teacher is having me write down 2 sentences of things I did in my day, and your right you have to not be so worried about the grammar and just focus on writing what you know down and then looking up words after. Also I don't know if your more of a visual learn like I am, but I just started putting together note cards but using pictures. I write the Koream word on one side and then put the picture on the other, I'm hoping it will help! Good luck on your studies!

For me, learning became not fun when I had a negative experience with a teacher. It was frustrating and I had thoughts of quitting because of the way I was treated. It took a few months and a lot of people being very supportive of me and encouraging me to keep going and not let this one bad experience define my Korean learning. Since ending my lessons with that teacher, I have found a group of new teachers who are super supportive and encouraging. My Korean has improved and I'm no longer worried that I'm not doing well enough. As you said, just continuing to study means I'm improving (and in reality, even slow progress is still progress). At the end of my last grammar lesson in 2021, my teacher complimented me by saying that when I started with her (6 months prior), I used only very short, simple sentences. Now she sees I am using longer, more complex sentences and higher level grammar. Comments like that (especially since she was so specific) really help me.

I messed up the other day the first time I tried to communicate a thought in Korean and the native I was speaking to kinda made fun of me and I just had to remember that when I was learning English as my first language I fucked up and cried about it a lot, but now I consider English linguistics one of my stronger suits. I decided years ago that I wanted to learn Korean but after learning the alphabet I just felt lost. There were so many different things I had to learn like vocab and grammar and a million different ways I could go about trying to learn them - it was honestly super overwhelming. This year I want to take a step back from the whole picture and instead, every time I sit down for some studying, I just want to think about what's one single thing I could do that day to improve my understanding of the language. My goal for this year is to spend at least one hour each week doing this with Korean, and also one hour each week with Italian, but I'm a bit more focused on the Korean because I am much further along with Italian.

@@Sunset553 I am doing German and Korean at the same time, while very slowly trying to get started in learning the bare basics of Mandarin and Japanese. I am much farther along with Germany because I had classes many years ago, so it was easier to pick it up last year when I started learning Korean, and I ended up focusing more on German. This year I need to focus more on my Korean, been focusing exclusively on the letters - felt a need to get thoroughly grounded in that aspect when Duolingo came up with intense lessons focusing only on the letters and building up slowly into simple words.

@@ainsley9880 I think especially apps in the "game" category have the possibility to change language. For example animal crossing, a "role-play" game where you interact with characters and have small conversations. Reading those kinds of conversations would be great in korean :)

My doctoral advisor stated about the doctoral process, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." In deciding how to effectively study the Korean language, I had to first study myself and in doing so, put these into practice. 1. I try to study during the period of the day I am the most alert. If I can't, I study anyway. 2. I hung a white board with magnetic markers in my bathroom to routinely quiz myself over parts of the language I struggle with. This has been very effective when I mixed up alphabet symbols, confusion related to the endless particles used in Korean sentences, and verb conjugation. 3. I've embraced the entertainment content coming out from South Korea and interact with it on a daily basis. This content gives an endless amount of opportunities to translate. 4. I trust the TTMIK system of learning, and have put their materials, resources, and advice into practice.

I absolutely love the language. As basic as it sounds, I wanted to learn Korean because of KPop. I would love to be able to understand what is being said, not only on the songs but on variety shows as well, but because I have a hard time focusing even in my day to day life, it got a bit hard for me to focus on studying Korean..I get easily distracted, I tend to zone out and I have a hard time processing words, even in English. I can sing along just fine to a lot of my favourite songs, it's just super hard for me to focus on studying. But I can also read a bit of Korean, slowly, super slowly but it's so satisfying when I actually understand the words on the screen. I feel that each year my vocabulary grows slowly but it's just focusing that is difficult for me...I'm getting tested for that soon I can't wait to continue my journey with studying such a beautiful language, and to start it here 😁

This video was made for me. I have decided to start learning Korean again now that I have finally pinpointed the reasons why I quit in the first place. There's actually two reasons - first was me being jealous that I have so many friends who speak Korean in an advanced level and they got there fast. This made me feel inferior. Second is the time limitations due to working + doing masters at the same time. Now that the latter is out of the way and I am ready to learn for myself (and not for someone else), it is time to catch up of where I left.

I studied a lot of Korean until May, then I somehow lost my interest, but I didn't worry much. I focused on other languages and didn't care about Korean for a few months. Suddenly my motivation came back, and now I'm mainly studying Korean. Learning languages is just a hobby for me, so I only study when I feel like studying.

One of the things they said on a previous vid is to get rid of that need of perfection. Even if you write one word and not a complete sentence, if this word is meaningful to you it will help to stick to your memory. It's a good idea to learn new vocabulary and grammar to improve, but do not feel limited for the lack of vocabulary to start a journal!

I started learning Korean back in 2016 and continued for about 7 months. I stopped because I could, read, write and understand, but was not able to speak properly. It discouraged me to continue as honestly one of the main goals of learning a language is to be able to speak in it fluently. Also, I found Korean tenses kinda difficult.

One thing that has kept me from starting (and holds me back often from improving in other languages) is thinking of language learning as such a bit task. My brain continues to off language learning because it feels overwhelming. For me, learning a language little by little is more effective and efficient.

I copy the lyrics of songs I like into a notebook. I will sound out the pronunciation of the words as I write it. I find it easier to learn words when there os a beat to it. Doing this allows me to learn to not only read Korean, but also to write it, to talk it, and hear it. It also allows me to recognize words, because songs often repeat lyrics.

The thing that I find most difficult is not having a study buddy. It's been years since I was in high school and learned French, but what I remember from that time is that it was super helpful to go over the vocabulary and the grammar with my friends, making up conversations etc. But practicing on my own, that is very challenging. So if anyone feels the same way, please reply to my comment so that we can be study buddies! I am somewhere midway level 2 by the way 😊

As always, excellent suggestions! I do most of these, but I highly recommend the small tip you said about reading numbers aloud in Korean. I do this when I am walking down the street and seeing addresses and phone numbers on signs. Even better is to try and say the numbers in the longest form so you can practice using 만, 천, 백. It is also useful to remember to switch between native and Sino numbers. Thanks for keeping us all inspired :)

I didn't get tired of studying Korean but I did get discouraged a while back because the progress was so slow for me. I'm 60, and always did well as a student, but find now that it does take me a bit longer to learn things than it did when I was younger. I decided that I needed to treat my Korean learning as a process, and feel good about whatever steps I was taking rather than getting impatient with myself. I started to do more reviewing of things I had already worked on. I saw a good video on KZbin from someone who gave tips based on their own experience, and they said to pick vocabulary words carefully and try to learn those that would be most useful for you. That was very helpful and I started to try to focus on words that I was most likely to use and would help me the most as a beginner in Korean. So, for example, I didn't learn the words for "mechanical pencil" right now, even though it was in a vocab list I had. I rarely use one of those, and couldn't picture when I'd ever have to ask someone to borrow one, or whatever! Learning words I was likely to come across in reading or that I might use often was better than just trying to memorize long lists of suggested vocabulary words. I've also set myself a little reward for finishing my current TTMIK textbook, and it is something I'm looking forward to(it is K-Pop related, lol) so that is also giving me a little boost of encouragement.

Language learning is a long process as you mentioned. It's kind of like eating an Elephant. To become fluent is a long, long process. I have to make a plan, and then just take one bite at a time. If I have a good plan, and I trust in the process, at some point all that will be left are bones and I will be fluent...the elephant will be eaten.

I feel overwhelmed even just trying to describe how discouraged I am with trying to learn Korean. 3 years ago, when I decided to start, the most fun I had was learning Hangul, which I found to be pretty easy, but everything since then has been an uphill battle. Grammar, vocabulary, conjugation of verbs, numbers, tenses, levels of formality... I understand very little of it, and every time I learn something new, I forget something from before. I'm over 50 and I can tell that I don't have the ability to absorb, comprehend, and retain knowledge like I used to when I was in my 20's. Over a year ago, I bought the first 5 levels of TTMIK books (the ones that come with workbooks) and I haven't been able to get past level 3 because I keep having to go back and re-read previous chapters (even level ONE!) over and over because I keep forgetting. Needless to say, that makes learning extremely frustrating... it's not even a question of being fun or not, because I can't get anything to stick in my brain. It also doesn't help that I don't know anyone who actually speaks Korean, so I feel like all of this studying is for nothing. I originally wanted to learn so that I could better understand Kdramas and Kpop, but even after almost 4 years, I can't pick up more than a few random words here and there, let alone pick out whole sentences. I've also been using Duolingo, and according to my stats, I've learned over 600 Korean words... but if I had to make a list right now, I doubt I could reach 50 from memory. Even when I watch a Kdrama now, if I turn off the subs, it feels like I'm hearing Korean for the first time and none of it makes any sense. My goal for 2022 is simply to not give up, although my motivation to keep going is extremely low, it's depressing.

i am exposed A LOT to korean...all the time kpop or kdramas. i realise my attitude is wrong...i want to become perfect in one shot. I learned 한글 back in 2018 but then i haven't moved ahead much....i can recognize very basic grammar objects when i hear korean conversations but i can't speak at all. I've also realized that learning korean through my mother tongue is much easier cuz both are very similar. I wanna progress this year, i will try my best!

The third tip applies very much to me. As I am improving in vocabulary and grammar, I recognized that my listening comprehension was not as good as it could be, which was quite frustating at first. But now I will add a new method in my learning pool from next week on which is finding listening material at my or just slightly above my level and test myself regularly. Since I'm learning on my own I think I overwhelmed myself the moment all my books I ordered to help with writing arrived (cries in k-drama) I've been learning online but this was not helping me take in the necessary information to make it stick, I stocked up on spiral notebooks, pens etc I'll make it stick! I found that if I study in a room I don't usually spend time in, flip on my phone with any desired lesson (hangul) & start taking all the notes following the lesson on paper, I turned a 1 1/2 hour lesson into 3 hours & I'm only 40 min in lol but it really did help, it reminded me how interesting the language really is & my drive came back. ( I've been suffering depression for the past few months so I've been putting my energy in the language, it's been therapeutic ) I do enjoy learning & once I start I'll keep on keepin on I tend to wander from all points with everything (when I clean I clean all rooms at same time, learn everything at same time) it's hard to stick to ONE thing & work my way up, I need to learn Hangul ! having to go back to recall what ㅕ , ㅓ, ㅡ , & ㅗ was & how to pronounce to get through a practice review & I kept getting ㄴ & ㄱ mixed up, it made me realize this is where I need to pour all of my focus in. more I write them while sounding it out the easier it's becoming, & after a few hours I no longer get ㄴ & ㄱ mixed up. (woohoo!) so my advice is to WRITE WRITE WRITE! it's still incredibly fun for me & every time I'm able to recognize a spoken word or read a word with ease, that helps me stay in the game with a sense of accomplishment. this day & age we have so much at our disposal online, there's no reason for me NOT to get through Hangul, as a gamer- I need this achievement unlocked🎇 lol Lastly, I had to remind myself WHY I wanted to learn the language is in the first place, & Then where to go after I've achieved this.. I decided to give myself an actual beneficial goal, Learn the language proficiently, turn it into a job/career. the endgame will come later lol one vowel at a time😂 새해 복 많이 받으세요!

Her English is amazing btw. Been studying Korean for 4 months and some weeks feel so unproductive. And the milestones are subtle! But those moments will happen. I woke up freezing cold yesterday morning and my first thought was: 너무 춥습니다, which ain't perfect Korean, but the thought format was a milestone. I listen to the 190 Korean Phrases TTMIK video a lot while i walk. Also the Korean sentence practice videos are very helpful (work, school, meeting friends, etc.)

TTMIK books really helped me in studying Korean ^^ I almost finished the book but due to time management, I failed to finish it since I was (am still) busy with driving class and studying. But I really recommended it to those who want to learn the Korean language from scratch. At least, it could be more easier if you learn how to read first (in my opinion) because of the grammar -_- its kinda complicated a bit but if you learn further, you will get it. Hwaiting!

For me, i lost the ambitious as i can't speak well (i don't know how to have a right intonation no matter how hard the teachers tried with me) and i lost 3 chances in one year to join the 말하기 대회 while my 후배들 passed me.( Still can't move on as i dunno how to chance my intonation) i stopped studying even i had topik 4 before. I lost interest in studying Korean last year because the lessons I followed each had about 50 new vocab words and 5 grammar structures, which I found overwhelming. I studied the lessons intensely because I wanted to get to an intermediate level. But after a month, lost all motivation to continue because it wasn't fun anymore and my progress was slow. In December last year, I decided to give the TTMIK website a try and I absolutely love it! The lessons are short, to the point, and provide many example sentences. Doing one lesson a day is not difficult at all and I am almost halfway through level 2! My biggest goal for this year is to just stay consistent, even if that means doing only one or two lessons per week.

I started my journey in 2020, my learning slowed down in mid-May 2021 as I had progressed through a lot of grammar patterns but still struggled with vocabulary. I kept recycling the same verbs and nouns making my learning monotonous and dull . But I restarted 3 months ago but by using different methods. Instead of just focusing on grammar patterns in TTMIK I took other lessons like Weekly Vocabulary and started using Hybe Edu, Naver dictionary and Netflix K-dramas for additional support. Its working like s dream!

I don't have the issue of losing interest... my issue is time. I wish I could sit and study all day every day but working 40+ hours a week, it is hard. I make sure to study at least 20 minutes a day, but it's not a lot and I'm progressing so slowly. I won't give up but I feel like after 2 years of learning, I should be much further than I am

Switching methods is the best advice you could give us. I am taking a Korean course with a korean teacher but it is soooo slow!! It's been almost a year since I started it and I can't even use adverbs. Then we had holidays and I began studying in my own and now I finished 3 books from that school and understand things I did not before.

I have heard in a TED Talk on have to be motivated to do something and really hang on to it for a long time - do not always try to be perfect! TTMIK kinda reinforces this concept to me again. It's just normal to be not perfect when you are just trying to learn, pushing yourself too hard will sabotage your interest 😜

My Korean learning started by handwriting Hangul in a translator to understand posts on a website. Then I started using an unstructured app and bought a textbook. The app teaches with games I like. I keep stopping, though, when I get scared. I haven’t started with the textbook. This year, I’d like to complete it and supplement it. I like your idea of getting more exposure to help make progress. My cousin actually changed her language settings to Korean on her ipod years ago. (You can tell how old I am lol) I didn't know Korean at the time as I was studying Japanese but I would just guess where everything was when I would borrow her ipod. This is a really great video! It's been fifteen months since I started studying Korean. I'm decent at reading and writing, and not-great at pronunciation, but it hasn't hurt my morale. I think what is most frustrating for me is not being able to hear it yet. I can occasionally make out a word or two, but I need it spoken so slowly to understand. I wish I could train my ears to hear the language better--maybe that just comes with learning more and more words.
