The sentence itself is good advice too! It's the same advice I give to my classmates about how I've kept up with my Korean over 10 years of on-and-off study! Start with webtoons because the images make it easier to parse when you don't quite understand the words. You start to naturally pick up on some vocab based on the context of the visuals, without having to check the dictionary every single time (though you'll still spend a lot of time checking a dictionary haha). Then after a year or two, once you stop having to look at the dictionary as much, start trying novels. Maybe even the novel version of one of those webtoons you were reading! A lot of webtoons are based on webnovels these days, so you can easily transition from comic to novel.

Me after hearing a sentence with 23 grammar points: Oh, I understood 90% the first time I heard it! I'm improving! Me after spending 3 days at my in-laws', listening to conversations: Oh, I understood 0.5%. I'm freaking hopeless.
@ytsangatsu5 күн бұрын
And that's exactly why you should not try to learn grammar first, when you hardly have any vocabulary you would need to APPLY any of those grammar "rules".
@themartialartsapproach87865 күн бұрын
@@ytsangatsu my in-laws speak a local dialect, use heavy slang, and speak really quickly, and 80% of the time six people are talking at once at the table. Even something as simple as asking which direction I should go, I can't get a standard answer. It would be like if an English learner was driving in Alabama and asked, should I turn left or right up ahead? And the response was, "Ya ain't gonna pull a uie till yer nose is sniffin' that Pinto's behind, if ya know what I mean."
@ytsangatsu5 күн бұрын
@@themartialartsapproach8786 I get your point. But you may be exaggerating your in-laws "dialect". Even then, it would be easier for you to go from that dialect to standard Seoul speech (if you are exposed to it enough to get to a point where you can understand it). If you get to the point where you can understand your in-laws, your own learning of the standard speech, watching dramas, etc., will be enough for you to make most needed changes to learn the standard language. 파이팅. (good luck)

No one can learn a foreign language by studying its grammar first, thinking that the vocab you learn will then automatically fall into place. It's only once you rather know a language well that that you can analyze its grammar, not learning grammar thinking that the vocab you learn will then just fall into place. To try and cram so many grammar points in one sentence, well, that's the wrong way to learn steroids. And I must say I am pretty disappointed because so many of your Korean language lessons are (were?) so good compared with so much of the usual KZbin language teaching fare... and I am really sorry for that negative comment.
