I am sure Korean people think that English is difficult.
@PiroMunkie5 жыл бұрын
When teaching Korean students I noticed that there is a particular way of speaking in Korean that really influences the way they speak English. That is, the way sounds like ㅂ ㄷ ㄱ have a slightly aspirated sound if they're at the beginning of a word, but are unaspirated if they're in the middle of a word. For example, 바보 can sound like "pabo" to an English speaker. And before Hangeul/English translations were normalized, 부산 was written in English as "Pusan." I notice this a lot when playing games like Hangman with my students. If they say B or D, or say 그 when they are trying to say G, to me it often sounds a lot like they're saying or and I usually have to clarify by writing it on the board first. I don't know if you've ever done a video on this topic, but I think it would be an interesting one to cover as the differences in sounds depending on where it is in the word can make it a little confusing to learners of Korean. And for native speakers of Korean, they may not even realize they do it, lol.

I've always wonderd why ㅅ ㅈ and ㅊ had a [t] sound...! And it's nice, because I also understood why consonants are "deaf" consonants in Korean when they're at the end of a syllable. ^^ It's all because of that "unfinished/unopened" sound rule. Very instructive, thank you!

J. Chang What do you mean?
@JChang-kn6mx5 жыл бұрын
@@juls8242 sorry i was in a rush before i couldnt answer it fuply. Basically, the ㅎ is just breath and air right? So for example, 이렇게(mean like this or in this way) is romanised as [i-reot-ge] for each syllable but together it is [ireoke]. This is because the nornal unaspirated, nonbreathy consanant ㄱ is influenced by the ㅎ before it, since ㅎ is breathiness, ㄱ[g] turns into a ㅋ[k] sound. Same thing with some other consanants: 대답하다(means to respond or reply) [dae-dab-ha-da] together is pronounced [daedapada]. The ㅂ and ㅎ are combined to make a ㅍ sound. 좋다 (means to like or to be good) [joh-da]/[jot-da] is pronounced like jot-ta/졷타

I watched this video and it actually gave me hope of understanding why the 't' sound happens so often at the end with so many different characters. I'd say the comments that blew my mind and opened up my understanding was @04:28: "In English...with a word like P-O-P, pop, you open you mouth at the end to make that 'peh' sound." I practiced this and yes...it happened and I never realized it, and then @04:52: "But in Korean...you just don't open the mouth until you know what vowel or what consonant is coming next. That's the general tendency...you don't know what's coming next, so you just keep your mouth closed...as a coincidence it sounds like 'O-T' or 'O-D'." 🤯 So it's not that it's a 'T/D' sound, it's that nothing follows it, which stops the sound...THUS MAKING IT SOUND LIKE 'T/D'!! If something does follow, then it resumes the 'sss' sound since it can flow into something else. Forever changed, forever grateful.
