My motivation starts to dwindle when I feel like I am not progressing at the rate I'm comfortable with. I'm usually so focused on moving forward that I don't realize how far I've come.

Same here. But I also find myself struggling to completely comprehend how to properly place words when trying to form sentences. All I've been able to grasp so far is that it is not the same as in English. Which then frustrates me and makes me feel like I've hit this snail like pace in understanding and I've been learning for months now.

@@n_1913 Aw, thank you. I'm trying not to lose the motivation and just do random things to help at least keep some of the information I've already learned fresh in my mind. But it does sometimes feel like it's stalled a bit in learning because I'm just stuck in the sentence building part. I do utilize TTMIK quite often and it's definitely helped a little. It's just baby steps. But that is awesome that you understand so much of what is being said on shows. Do you still use subtitles or do you get the gist of what's overall being said?

It’s true, I am guilty to say I stopped my classroom/textbook-style learning for Korean language because I “didn’t have time”. But here’s how I kept learning: (1) I have not stopped exposing myself to the language! I have been feeding my brain with Korean people talking in variety shows, youtubers talking in their vlogs, finding kpop lyrics translations (and then complain how their translations are inaccurate) and lots more. I also like to sing, so I got really curious about the chorus of some songs, and study the lyrics. I learned so much from song lyrics alone, sometimes I used the lyrics to remember my grammars. Whenever I could understand an interview/ TV show without subtitles, i feel proud of myself. Then I feel motivated and watch more Korean contents. haha! (2) fake it till you make it (Oral practice) Today, I was bored while walking to work, and started imagining a Korean person interviewing me about why and how I learned Korean. (P/s: yes I was talking to myself. Putting on earphones might help to disguise). I tried to tell my story in Korean and force my way through even though it may not be grammatically correct. I even used pause-fillers in Korean to think and beat around the bush hahahaha ! yeah I was bored and I don’t have anyone to speak to in Korean :( but role playing is kinda fun. It motivates me whenever I envision myself expressing my thoughts fluently in Korean one day, just like those people I have been watching and listening. (3) fake it till you make it (SNS version). Some days, I feel like expressing myself in Korean. If I don’t know the word I will research and post the finished sentences as my caption on Instagram. Because I follow some Korean artists, sometimes I would comment their pictures in Korean (to practice or just for fun). But hey few days ago someone replied my comment in Korean. Idk why I got so touched, it’s like a small win for me. And these small steps make me feel motivated.

When I was a teenager, I had this...lofty goal of becoming a court interpreter of an East Asian language. Most people want to study Korean because of K-POP or dramas, but I'm simply impressed by the hard-working, honest traits of Koreans, and got more into the idea of learning Korean by unusual things, such as Aegukga. The girl that attends the same level as me is really into BTS, and her spontaneity in how she learns Korean allows her to be much more fluent. Difficulties in speaking spontaneously in Korean cause me stress. Understanding grammar is easier than actually speaking, because I always forget some key word.

I wanna learn Korean for multiple reasons: 1. I have some Korean friends and I find that I make friends with Korean people easily since usually most of the ones I’ve meet are pretty friendly so it would be nice if I spoke Korean too 2. I wanna eavesdrop 😏 Jk. Kinda. Also I really wanna work in a Korean store bc the atmosphere between the staff seem to be friendly so why wouldn’t I want a good work environment? 3. To understand Kdramas, Korean Webtoons and Kpop. Also to just be part of the Korean internet community and if I ever have any Korean products or I have to read instructions and descriptions I can understand them.

I liked KPop before I became interested in Korea as a whole. It had me get into K-dramas and eventually Korean history and culture. I was and am still initially impressed by how the language was made, philosophies ingrained into the culture, including Korean Shamanism and other traditional practices and ways of thinking. Naturally, people find it weird how I am learning about planets in Korean and the galaxy at large, cardinal points, plants, traditional music and ritual etc, among everyday speech. Eventually, I want to settle there and truly immerse myself in the experience, regarding the country and its people. There are many more reasons why I am learning the language, and I believe I had lost my determination a moment there, so this video really helped. 감사합니다!

Why do I learn Korean? 1) Long time ago, I watched kdrama and it doesn't have any subtitles on it. I was so sad and I thought "if I can understand Korean, I would be able to watch this". 2) When the first time I listened to Blackpink's song, I watched the lyrics version, and it was so fast I couldn't read the meanings of it. And I felt like, "I wish I could understand the lyrics". 3) Korea, my dream place. I wanted to go to Korea. And I need to study about the culture, language, and everything about it. 4) I wanted to study in Korea!

100% me. The forming of sentences has been such a struggle. I'm 50/50 on the words. Sometimes I need to see the item and I'll remember the word and other times I'll need to hear the word to remember what item it is for. In order to help me remember, I put the Korean words of something on an index card and then put the English translation on the back and tape it to my walls throughout my house. Haha 수영 (swimming) is on my stair case. I see it then try to pronounce it and try to remember what it means then I check the back and make sure I got it correct. Each new word I get from KoreanClass101 in my email gets put somewhere on my wall where I can see it everyday. Now if only I could figure out how to place it in a sentence.

My motivation to learn korean: 1. I would like to work and obtain a scholarship for a master, it could be in Korea or another country. 2. I would like to teach korean in the future. It would represent an alternative job and I think it would improve my cv. 3. I take it also as a hobby. I feel very good learning it and I enjoy the rutine and classes in the academy. 4. It keeps me connected with the kpop music and doramas, and it helps me to learn more about the korean culture. 5. If I can't get a scholarship or a job in Korea, at least I would to visit it for tourism. Being realistic about my situation (lack of money, regular grades in the university, 10 years and a half to finish my career, almost 30 years old, poor laboral experience in my profession, etc) maybe I would not be able to reach that dreams, I don't know if there is still hope for me, but I just want to try it and enjoy the process :)

Thanks for these useful tips ! Maybe i could add one more tip. Sadly I'm a very lazy dude, but I still study korean for one year, every day. The only reason that allowed me to do that is because i use a method called "spaced repetition". The basic function of spaced repetition is to memorize things "almost forever". Principle is easy to understand : - You will need a box with 7 compartments + a specific calendar (link below). - Each day you write 5/7 words (or sentences, or what you want) on tiny cards, and you write the translated word in korean at the back. - each day you answer related level cards. if you succeed, put your card in upper compartment. If you fail, put it back at level 1 ! You also can us this method to remember your girlfriend birthday, or why was Clair Patterson an amazing guy ;) The main reason why i keep using it is because it's playful. Each day i want to learn new things, to put new questions in the box ! You can read more on the site where i discover that : "how to remember anything forever-ish" by Nicky Case. Hope this will help you learning :)

Ahhh I totally agree with what you said! I am studying Korean because I think it’s very interesting and fascinating and right now I have this goal of moving there for one year so I’d like to be able to understand ahah I am going to Seoul the next Spring for a trip but at the same time I’d like to start challenging myself and be able to say basic stuff. I started being interested in the Korean language and culture at the beginning of this year when I discovered how good k dramas are (and later became interested in k pop too). I feel like I discovered a whole new world because I started falling in love with the language day by day and most recently I found out I can cope better with anxiety and depression when studying Korean so I think that’s good. Studying Korean daily makes me happy :)

Your tips are great and are true to how I learned Spanish. I started with Korean, but went to Chinese because it seemed easier to learn/understand. I just love all languages, but speaking Korean and Chinese has been very difficult for me. I want to read Korean books... 😞 I have a long way to go. I appreciate your podcasts and videos. They are encouraging to foreign Korean language learners.

My reason is that I'm Korean but was born in Germany and my whole family is Korean and can speak it. I learned Korean for four years (until I was 8) when I was a child but now that I'm in university I wanted to visit my family who still lives in Korea and can't speak English or German.

I most love that you started out asking people to remember/set their priority/goal for learning; most businesses would give cookie cutter advice in order to sell more products. This is just another reason why I truly love this program. P.S. You’re already getting all my money because I’m 100% committed and in this for the long run. Two new books arrived today!

Oh, and while I was listening to this video I was browsing Amazon for a new journal. Going to take the advice you gave awhile ago in another video and start writing a daily journal in Korean only. I’m partway through level 3 and I think I can handle that. 🤞🏾

Thank you for this. I have purchased more than 15 books from TTMIK and at times, thinking of selling it since it is very hard for me to improve grasp of the Korean language. 2020 may be the time for me to re-direct my goal then.

My reasons for learning Korean was so I could watch interviews and variety shows without having to look at captions. They often go by so quickly and it's hard to watch and read and also enjoy the show. I also want to learn so I can be the unofficial translator for my family when we watch things in Korean.❤️

I chose it because it is the newest written language, I'm older and learning is said to reduce the chance of dementia, i'm also a k-pop fan. I plan to start in earnest this winter when I can't get out and can learn in quiet, when the family is in another state for 6 months.

Emily Rose It’s so funny, just recently our English prof at uni told us about learning vocabs cause she wrote a thesis on it.... she said you have to have used a new word at least seven times before you can remember it without having to think about it a lot... and also in different ways, for example reading it in a sentence, reading it with translation, listen to a conversation that includes that word and most important using it while talking in different contexts:) so the third point is definitely really helpful!!

Thankfully, I don't have this problem. Just like how I learned English, I'm learning Korean by naturally acquiring it. Of course I had to get the basics down (reading and writing) and then I just made the language a part of my life by watching videos that *interest* me every day. I make sure I'm having fun with it. I'm not even stressing myself with the grammar. And although my learning speed is much slower than the others, whenever I learn something new, they stick better.

what's also a good thing is ... put 'post its' every where ... you will learn words in no time ... put it on the mirror and the translated word on it or whatever on a shelf on a mug things you use daily ... you will always find your 'post it' and remember the word for it ... 😅 yes that's how I do it! 😜

I am learning Korean because I like learning languages related to stuff I really like. Mainly certain foods. Also, to impress my sister's husband's mother (who is from Korea). His mother is really nice and was a chef (I absolutely *loved* her cooking). I bet she'd be impressed if I said a few sentences in Korean

I became a bit unmotivated after a trip to China where I met some Korean tourists and tried to speak Korean to them... I almost couldn't get any words out.. Which was very demotivating. And have trouble learning it consistently every since. But sometimes I hear Korean songs and listen to how beautiful the Korean language is I remember why I am learning Korean. :)

my original reason for learning korean was just so i can watch kdramas without subtitles and nothing feels more satisfying than being able to understand for most part of what is said or talked about in kdramas or korean songs really^^ noticing that i improved alot keeps me motivated and i may not have enough time to actively study but because i spend my time watching kdramas i can still pick up quite some words every episode by either writing down or looking up new words right away i recommend using onenote too to keep all your notes n such in one place, especially for pdf files (for example for iyagi) cuz you can insert file printouts n put the meaning of words next to the printout, for looking up the meaning of words i use the naver dictionary reading webtoons (in korean) can also be really fun for intermediate learners and variety shows are definitely good for learning as well with all the texts you can read that explain what is going on or said but in short picking up little by little is good enough fam, keep er goinnn we'll get to our goals eventually ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ♡

I am a kpop fan but I never wanted to learn just because of that . Learning languages has always been one of my interests . I already know 3 languages that I can speak , read and write and I want to explore more . Because language increases your knowledge. It opens up a wide door to gain knowledge . Plus I am a writer and I love literature and always interested to read books in other languages

It started with kpop, and then i did reasearch about korea history (i did a project in 5th grade on the korean world i failed it not the point tho 😂😂) i feel selfish to just learn a language to understand music, i want to connect with people and want understand their cultures,so i told myself we are going to learn it to connect and learn a whole new language. So far it's been so cool

I have just recently started learning Korean. And for a beginner, grammar and vocabulary are both needed together. You can't learn/understand one without the other. But every new word I learn in Korean, it seems very new. Difficult to pronounce and remember as well. Difficult as in, I can't feel it. I can't identify any part of it. I am not sure if I am expressing myself correctly but, like English is not my first language too. I have been learning it from school. And while I am fairly good at grammar, there's always a lot to learn in vocabulary. But whenever I hear/read a new English word, it looks familiar, it feels English, I tend to pronounce it incorrectly(that's a problem with the language, you just can't guess it) but it still feels less complicated, shorter, easier to learn and remember once I get the meaning. It makes it easier. But Korean words just feel so different, the sounds, the length, pronunciation, everything makes it seem like it is impossible to learn them. That kinda demotivates me. Can someone tell me why is it? Is it because of the Korean language itself, or just because I am very new to it. Like, I have had English a compulsory subject all my school life and we learn all subjects in English too. Maybe the exposure or time makes it easier.

My initial motivation was wanting to travel comfortably in South Korea. I learned the basics and when I would hear someone talking in Korean I would say "I'm learning Korean, can you please check my pronunciation?" and try to talk to them in Korean. Koreans are so so sweet when you try Korean and they become so happy that you are taking an interest in their culture and language. I love seeing how happy it makes them, and so that has become my motivation. Korean is much too difficult to learn only for travel reasons if you want to go once or twice. Now, I want to go to South Korea long-term because I have really loved learning Korean history/culture/politics etc, and I want to continue to make Koreans feel appreciated and happy.

I actually needed this video! I started learning with TTMIK in 2015 so it's gonna be 5 years since I started learning korean and at the beginning I was going hard but as the years pass by I've started to become lazy and lack a lot. The thing is that I am really lazy to learn new vocabulary and with new vocab you can expand your sentences and make them richer so I just need to sit down on my ass and memorize it but idk why I feel so unmotivated :(. I'm really good at grammar but vocabulary man.. it's hard to memorize new words for me. But I hope to find that drive I had back then and start learning properly this year! So I can read books and articles without much trouble.
