I sometimes feel like the only way to really view this show is that everyone around Clark basically knows he's magic, but his friends are too nice to press him about any details, and Lex can never quite get any proof of exactly what's up. I mean Lionel TOTALLY knows Clark has super powers at this point but is just keeping quiet about it while keeping various investigations going for more info. But yeah that was a killer line by Ryan haha.
@vbrandy7088 Жыл бұрын
Ryan wasn't entirely right tho cause Lana knew since Clark saved her from the tornado that he might be different, she even confronted him about it. Lana had suspicions hence why she believed Van in "Extinction" when he told her that Clark was bulletproof. As for Chloe she was always digging in Clark's personnal life cause she was intrigued by him being secretive and was like something doesn't add up lol. Perry's advantage was that he was conscious and right in front of Clark when he saw him using his powers.

Aside from Christopher Reeve, Michael McKean is the best guest star this show ever had. The man just commands the screen every time he's on and his range of emotions is amazing. The scene with Michael at the Luthor Mansion especially is brilliant. He was the best choice to portray any version of Perry White.

@dbmabe Жыл бұрын
The reason "Walking In Memphis" was used in the ending scene was a tip of the hat to Lane Smith who'd played Perry White in "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." In the classic comics and TV series, Perry White was known for exclaiming "Great Caesar's Ghost" when he was surprised. In "Lois and Clark," since Lane Smith was a southerner, they made his Perry White an avid Elvis fan and his exclamation was "Great shades of Elvis." Hence, a song about Memphis. Sadly, Lane passed two years later from ALS.

This is where Season 3 really starts kicking into gear. Perry is such a key episode, and not only because it introduced an iconic character. It's the episode where Lex begins to unravel, where Lionel's deep dark past begins to come to the forefront and where Chloe starts wondering how she can escape Lionel's clutches. I also give it extra credit for treating a legacy character with respect. A lost art in today's Hollywood.

I love almost every single episode of this television series. At the time this show came out, I was serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS GEORGE WASHINGTON CVN 73, and our ship was in NEW York harbor on September 11th. I was witness to one of the worst events in Hyman history, and our entire division would watch this show on our downtime. It kind of gave us exactly what we needed at that time, which was HOPE. The belief and hope in humanity 🙏 that we as military members needed so deeply. This show has magic in it.😢 There's a quality that is emanating from each and every episode that inspired all of us. Some of that has to do with the performances of. TOM WELLING and Michael Rosenbaum. Some of it has to do with the scripts of AL and MILES. (Who's presence is missed greatly in the last few seasons, IMO, but it's still good)and some of it has to do with the nature of the characters from Superman. No ther film or television show has captured the spirit of the source material in the same way. The show and its stories make the viewer want to be a better person. Thank you for your work. I promise you that it was time well spent. It had a positive effect on this world. 🌎

Michael, Tom read this: For the song Walking In Memphis at the end, I believe is a symbolic song, a spiritual awakening. Perry was an alcoholic when he showed up in Smallville but left as a new person after meeting Clark. The song represents personal growth while walking through a place, reflecting past experiences and personal transformations. So this song fit well for the ending. Perry left Smallville to start his journey it shows he was meant to be in Smallville. Hope that makes sense to you guys. After being in so many English/Literature classes in highschool, learning about symbolisms in songs, poems, etc. this type of knowledge sticks with you post high school 😆

Nice to see an episode that everyone greatly enjoys. Michael McKean has wonderful personality and presence as Perry White, and the sunspots affecting Clark are a great way to have a unique premise for an episode, and Clark's up and downs regarding his powers are fun to watch. This also gives us the vital information that Clark gets his powers from solar radiation. I think the sunspots plot might've been taken from an episode of Static Shock, a DC animated series, as I remember his powers were affected by sunspots for an episode too. Knowing how much potential Perry has, given who he's going to become, and the potential being clearly present with his go-getter attitude, journalistic passion, and courage, it makes him very engaging to watch with Michael's excellent performance. The ending action sequence is wonderfully tense and involving too.

Having a patreon subscriber on is a fantastic idea. Love the podcast and I'll always hold on to Smallville, but understandably, Michael and Tom tend to not notice the shows easter eggs and references to other DC characters, franchises and some other deeper lore connections. It's almost never important to the overall story I admit, but people tend to appreciate those details. That's why the shows creators had the set designers put in references to things like "Smallville Crows vs Emerald Knights" on signs posted in the halls of Smallville High, as an example. Emerald Knights of course being a reference to Green Lanterns. It's also why there are entire youtube channels dedicated to pointing out all those references in movies and shows, channels that have million of subscribers and views in many cases. I've never seen anyone do an Easter egg breakdown for Smallville, it's quite an undertaking watching 220 or so episodes and paying attention for every last Easter egg, and since you guys are going through the series for the first time it's an excellent opportunity to point out those easter eggs. Having a patreon on the show would be a great opportunity to get a long time fans perspective on things, chances are they would have been a fan of Superman and superheroes before Smallville came out and may very well see a lot of references to other DC characters/franchises that otherwise go unmentioned.

The "Walking in Memphis" scene was a nod to Lane Smith's Perry White from the Lois & Clark 90s show. He was portrayed as an Elvis fan in their version. He died in 2005.

Having Perry White on this show THIS early like this in the series was a shock for me. I was scared that the storyline was going too far too fast. I had the same reaction when Lois shows up in Season 4 but seeing the development for Perry White is so damn important because he runs the Daily Planet in the comics and movies. So seeing Perry a mess in this episode is a nice introduction cause he does make an impact on Clark/Superman's life. In my knowledge for Superman (so far) I have never known that solar flares can affect Clark's powers. I thought THAT was a nice little storyline. I did assume that solar flares affect Clark's powers because the sun is his power source. This episode was really good. McKean crushed it as Perry White. And it's so cute that McKean and O'Toole are married in real life.

My guess for the Walking in Memphis connection: The Perry White in Lois & Clark used to say "Great shades of Elvis!" instead of "Great Ceasar's ghost!" But it's not something he said in any other version, so it's a tentative connection at best. They probably should've had him make some offhanded remark about being an Elvis fan somewhere during the episode if they were dead set on closing with that song.

Hearing one of the best Lex Luthor actors ever genuinely wonder out loud if Perry White is an important Superman side character simultaneously brought my DC loving heart nothing but joy and a tinge of pathetic fanboy sadness… “He doesn’t know who Perry White is!? One of my favorite episodes of the entire series. Michael McKean was a perfect choice to portray Perry White. I would also have to agree that Season 3 was beginning of Smallville hitting its stride. Back in the day, for me, Smallville was appointment television. My loved ones knew not to call -- absolutely no interruptions!! 💛💙❤️💋💯

Thank you so much for doing this! I got so happy to find out you guys have a podcast about Smallville. So good to hear your voice again! I am from Brazil and I remember my sister watching it on TV every single week but I was too young to get interested (it was also a big hit on Brazilian television). I am now 28 and I heard the opening song somewhere on the internet and it triggered my old memories so I started watching the show. I am just loving it! I even did my fiancé watch it with me, and he doesn’t really watch shows, so that says a lot about the quality. Ps: I live in Canada so I know very well the sadness of being in the rainy cold, no-sun country ahahaha😅 Keep up the hard wiek

I love this episode, my favorite scene is Lex opening the bar's door with the light behind him, kind of a western hero, 🌹🌹.

The fact that Welling shares the same middle name as Rosey's brother makes it even worse he couldn't remember it. 🤣

I watched season 2 within 25 hours. I like season 3 more, currently on ep 19). Love the nostalgia when I come across an episode I saw on TV when younger. Keep up the good work ❤

Perry White is an Elvis fan. That's why they played that song. His catch phrase was changed from"great Ceasars ghost" to "great shades of Elvis!" In Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman.

I never had a problem with the song at the end. I always got the feeling that it was conveying new beginnings for both Perry and Clark because Perry offered an avenue into The Daily Planet (and we all know he ends up there). I don't think the lyrics were meant to be taken literally. I think it set the right mood for the end of this episode.

According to IMDB it was a throwback to Lane Smith's portrayal of Perry White in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, because he loved Elvis.

If you want to decide on Ryan's favorite scene at the same time as Tom while factoring in the delay, just have Micheal write his choice on the paper he's always holding and Tom can vocalize his while Michael visually reveal his.
