But I don't understand why Rosenbaums Lex wasn't a super genius like the other Lex's you know like in the show if there was any badass Technology he either blackmailed the into working for him or he stole their research. I know cw did their own story and changed things up...but if lex always has a high level intellect for technology why didn't they just go with that in the show? In CW Supergirl, Lex creates all the tech he uses by himself and he was to have it that way Just a thought and see if a fellow fan knew anything? @animorphtoto

Lol the part when Michael says, “Lex doesn’t need to know what Clark is doing all the time,” cracks me up cuz that is exactly what Lex spends most of his time in the first couple of seasons trying to figure out (what Clark is always up to)! 😂

There are a few things that really stand out to me about this episode. 1. The way Lex wipes his hand on his coat after Cassandra dies was such a nice touch. Because here's this guy so obsessed with how he evaded death, and it's like now he's super disturbed to be literally touching it. It's just an "eugh *shudder*" moment that was really well done. Especially since even for that, he still called out for help. He didn't just cringe and run away. 2. I've listened to all the podcasts so far, but I didn't start (re)watching along until this episode. I'm not sure if this is the first one of the series, but it's definitely one of my earliest memories of watching and knowing that things aren't going to end well for Clark and Lex, but also really wishing that they could. Like, maybe if Lex hadn't been so obsessed or Clark had been able to be more honest and open or Jonathan had been able to see past Lionel for more than 10 seconds at a time, things would have been so much better for everyone. And sometimes all the could-have-beens are really frustrating (I'd watch a show where Clark told Lex, Michael!), but it's also really compelling (and maybe a little heartbreaking) to watch them both march toward what we know their destinies are while still being able to make it feel like "it didn't have to be this way." 3. Martha. I'm glad Ryan gave her her props, because she did everything right. She trusted her instincts. She fought back. I wouldn't even necessarily say she was overpowered, things just didn't land quite her way, and that was really heartening to see. 4. Knife CGI: So yeah, it's one of those things that looks like 2001 CGI, because it IS 2001 TV CGI. You can't compare it to today's work, but it's really hard not to. Having said that, I do think it worked in large part thanks to the slo-mo. Because I'm not *really* focused on the flying knife bits, but it's a great opportunity to see Clark's face when his invulnerability is still a little new to him, and Harry's as he witnesses this insane feat. Not to mention for some reason I was drawn to the way his hand opened as he dropped the crumbling knife. So yeah. Fine for the time CGI, but great performances for any time. Keep up the good work guys!

What I really love about Lex's vision is the little Justice League easter eggs -- in the field of bones, just before the blood rain starts, you can see Batman's cowl, Martian Manhunter's skull, Wonder Woman's bracelets (I think, that one's a little less clear to me) and the Green Lantern ring. Most of the time, Kryptonite abilities draw from both the surroundings and the person being affected themselves. The guy in the pilot got electricity powers because he was in an electric machine. The guy in the second episode got bug powers because he was bitten by bugs. Tina got shapeshifter abilities because she got kryptonite in her diseased bones. The guy in cool got the ability to suck heat out of things because he was in a frozen lake. Harry got his youth back because the water acted like a fountain of youth and because he was obsessed with the past as evidenced by his desire for revenge and his documentary of the past of Smallville. Cassandra got her powers because she was looking at an explosion from the kryptonite meteorites crashing and lost her sight in the process. I think Clark's vision of the future is explained in the episode. He's going to outlive all his loved ones because of his abilities

@@ptolemeeselenion1542 I don't remember it being an idea in the comics at all until the episode in Lois and Clark where Lois started obsessing about her growing old and Clark staying young. In that episode, there was a machine that could exchange one person's vitality into another. In the final scenes Clark uses the machine to reverse the prematurely aging of Jimmy Olsen. (The "old" version was played by Jack Larson, the Jimmy Olsen from the "Adventures of Superman.") They left it as an open question as to whether Clark would continue to age or not. Since then it has been used in comics with alternate worlds and timelines. But they have to know the Superman of "today" won't have the following if he ages too much.

I loved this episode because it gave a glimpse into the futures of both Clark and Lex. Lex seems to be well pleased in who he becomes, which shows there has always been an underlying darkness. It also shows that he doesn't need anyone, but himself. Clark, on the other hand, was shaken by a future where he will outlive everyone he loves. Clark needs and wants the companionship of others. That is one of the places he draws strength from. Sadly, Lex will never realize that. He thinks loving is a liability and makes you weak.

The expression on Lex's face as he pulls his hand and calls for help was just so beautifully done You would think he would run away but calling for help was a choice . And Hiram Kent was mentioned who we see later in another episode in the future. Wait they didn't credit her? She was amazing!! Also, the young guy who played a younger Harry was so good. The grain scene with Martha and Harry was a good one. We see she's quick on her feet and pulls the grain down. Clark was raised by a strong woman and that speaks to his values as he becomes Superman.

My fav lines in Hourglass were the ones where Chloe and Pete make fun of Lana for losing Harry and Clark goes “I heard that.”

A live podcast would be awesome 👏🏼 Maybe you could do them with special occasions such as season premiers, season endings, 50th/100th/200th episodes, meaningful episodes, etc.

I like the symbolism they added with the name of the lady: Cassandra. In Greek mythology, Cassandra was given the gift to see the future, but the curse of nobody believing her. I like when storytellers come up with this kind of things.

Loving the podcast you guys, it means alot to me and the fans! Smallville is the reason I fell in love with acting and joined theatre in high school. Did it in college and now my dream is to one day play Clark or Lex in the future.

As a professor going back to campus for the first time in over two years, the stress is HIGH, the hours are long (School prep that I am doing right now!), and being able to process this show again in a whole new light with you guys, former cast members, etc., is the best, hands down. It sounds like you two enjoy seeing the series through a revisited lens. Know that we are out here enjoying every bit of it.

I remember Jackie Burroughs on Disney's Avonlea in the '80s, and she always looked that old. She was a great actress. As a little kid, I was terrified of her character because she was so strict, but grew to love her because she was so warm underneath that strict exterior.

In addition to saves and deaths, you should count concussions. I've been rewatching the show too and I'm amused at how many times people are knocked unconscious so Clark can use his abilities.

I like that Clark is starting so quickly to not be bothered by these scary people. People would run away in most cases, but he maybe understands his availabilities so well and knows he can’t be hurt so he’s not scared of these bad people. Every time there’s a scary scene I’m like looking at Clark’s reaction and expecting him to be scared and then all of a sudden remember he has powers but it’s always like right away he’s totally chill no matter what’s going on. It’s like he’s ready to save people and help people. He’s never worried about himself at all. Maybe that’s because he’s known about most of his gifts for all his life. I just wonder at this point how many times has he saved people. Maybe he always has, but we are just tuning into it.

Interesting fact about the naming of characters: Cassandra in Greek Mythology was a Trojan priestess dedicated to the god Apollo and fated by him to utter true prophecies but never to be believed. I like to think this was very much intentional naming of the writers part, as it's a relatively well known (at least to me haha) story

The electric from his wheelchair activated the Kryptonite in the water which cause Harry's transformation. After he turned back to his "old self", he went back to the pond and did it again after Clark visited him in the nursing home. Yes, I'm a Smallville nerd. I wouldn't say the show changed my life, but this is the first tv series where I watched every episode from start to finish. This was my favorite episode of the season. It's great to hear your insights. I guess I never considered you guys never really watched it after the episodes were filmed and edited.

She was amazing! It is so interesting hearing what you guys went through. This podcast goes WAY far behind the scenes, and it's so eye opening hearing what you guys went through.

Well written episode, one of the best from season 1. Great guest stars. There's much going on here...Glimpse of Lex future, Clark destiny is revealed! Tom and Jackie chemistry was incredible. Very young Eric😀 is here. Lex future scene and cemetery scene were great! Harry' s killing spree was good, particularly when he attacked Martha at home. Great acting overall . 🙂
