Sabrina Carpenter's back must be sore from carrying this whole movie. Plus, they expect us to believe that Jodi is the ONLY tall person in her school, and that there would be NO OTHER taller guys or girls at her school.

I think it’s insane that they want us to believe that there are any other kids over 6ft at there school. Like half the guys at my high school were at least 6ft and some girls were at least 5’10 (which isn’t as tall as her, but still).

That bothered me so much too, I'm pretty sure the tallest person in my high school was around 6'3" or 6'4" - hell, even my own brother was over six feet by the eleventh grade. The fact that she, at 6'1", is the only tall person in her entire school is definitely unrealistic

Legit tall girl here. Can be it hard to buy clothes? HELL Yeah. Do people greet me with "You're tall!" instead of "Nice to meet you"? All the time. Have guys lost interest in me because they're insecure about their own height? A few times. Do I envy petite girls? Occassionally. BUT THATS IT. That's the end of my Tall Girl Oppression. It's annoying sometimes, really empowering other times. Can confirm: dumb premise for a movie.

In general I have a problem with the whole “your first love/crush is your one true love” trope. I think kids and teens should be aware that sometimes you need to date a few people and get to know yourself before settling down (if you even decide to do so). For me, it was a lot of movies that helped create this strong sense of urgency: like if I didn’t get with the person who I really really liked that there would be NO ONE ELSE possibly out there for me. That I would end up alone. Even in movies where the star looks to their friend/best friend and are like “it was you all along”, I think it’s realistic to admit or realize that no matter how much you like someone or how long you’ve known them; that they may not be your one and only. Some people don’t believe in “one true love” and that’s honestly pragmatic and logical. Sometimes love fades and dies, people change and people move on and that’s ok. We may not be meant for our high school or even college sweethearts.

Who the hell chose that final outfit? It doesn't go with her shoes, it doesn't flatter her at all. I don't know about in America but the tall women in my family (not me, I'm short as hell) have had trouble showing their femininity. Dresses are often too short, as are the more feminine shirts. It would have made more sense to have her in a beautiful dress that really flattered her, especially since boys turned her down presumably because her height threatened their masculinity. Instead they stuck her in a boxy, old-fashioned suit that clashes with what they were attempting with her character arc. They could have done a suit like what you see in PLLs, Emily ware a suit-dress that showed her more sporty style with her femininity well and something like that would have been a better suit option. But really, stick her in a gorgeous, knee length dress, with the tall heels, and her hair done nicely and make her look like the teen girl she wants to be seen as, but one that stuts above the rest unashamedly. That would fit what they were going with well cause she'd be eye catching, but just another girl, one that is more than just tall.

With the love triangle scenario, the reason I hate modern love triangles is that it always feels like the mc or lead character is getting backed into a corner by the two potential love interests and they have to make a choice between the two. Technically it's not actually a triangle it's just an arrow.

And then Stieg was bullied before bc he was gay and the attention from all the women is shown as really creepy and objectifying. And then Jodi dies off screen or something idk she doesn't survive my rewrite.

They could have made an inspiring and uplifting story about being different and confident! How you can be loved, even if you're a little different. Netflix just doesn't seem to be able to do it. It reminds me of Sierra Burgess, for example, where they tried to show that a bigger girl can be loved. Instead they just called her ugly, let her be bullied, but then also made her a horrible person who did something very bad and got rewarded for it. It feels like the same way big orgs handle LGBTQ+ and racial minorities, where they make all movies and franchise about the community very negative and sad. Yes, these minority groups all experience discrimination and most of them have negative experiences, but that doesn't negate their positive experiences and their right to a happy ending. We need shows and movies to show us possibilities, not limitations. Anyways, thanks for always making great content, Serena. You looked gorgeous as usual. You're amazing, beautiful inside and out, and you have a great, positive community!!

You can tell when there's bad direction when an actor (Griffin Gluck aka Jack) can seem bad in a movie like Tall Girl but then in another project (Locke & Key) He can show a ton of subtle emotions in the face & mannerisms. In Locke & Key he can portray different personas and does a great job. So clearly Tall Girl must have had a bad director. The dialogue and writing in this movie is pretty bad too though.

I interpreted steig as naive, shallow, and vain because of how much he enjoyed the attention he was getting along with his newfound popularity. Jodi’s sister and best friend are the best characters in the film because they were the people that stood up for Jodi. Oh and jack’s love interest who deserved better. I think I was blinded my andie and duckie wish fulfillment with jodi and jack that I ignored the problems with them. Liz deserved better.

As a short person who has many 6"+ friends and family members, one thing that really annoyed me about this movie was the director's choice to exaggerate her proportions in some scenes and not others. Like in the opening scene she's sitting there looking relatively normal, but if you look at her hand it practically dwarfs the book she's reading, so it makes her seem like she's going to be an actual giant, meanwhile in the real world people who are 6" and up are perfectly proportional and have nothing to worry about with holding books or really even being soooo colossal in height compared to other people to warrent the reactions in this movie. But to backtrack here, as I said in other scenes her height isn't as exaggerated. I get that this may be an artistic choice to convey how she feels in her own skin vs how she is actually seen by others, but I don't think such extremes are necessary to convey that, it's visually jarring and unrealistic. Like if someone's hand is gonna dwarf a book they better be closer to 7, 8, or even 9" Also, maybe it's just me, but 6"- 6'1" has never seemed ridiculously tall to me, or maybe I've just gotten so use to those around me in that their heights no longer register. 🤷‍♀️

what's your stance on anime? cause i have a recommendation for you with a similar premise but, you know, really good. there's this romcom anime called Lovely Complex and the main characters are a girl and a guy and she's 16 sm taller than him. and for like the first third or even half it's more so about them becoming friends [cause their best friends are dating each either if I remember correctly] but then there's a point at which they start developing feelings for each other. and honestly, it's a very well-plotted, interesting and funny anime that I highly recommend.

I know it's not important in the grand scheme of things, but as a Swedish person the character of Stig bothers me. Not every native Swede is blonde and blue eyed, the stereotype is just boring by now. Also, no one under the age of 60 is called Stig, it just shows how lazy the screen writers were, they really just googled: swedish male names and didn't look at what kids born in the late 90s and early 2000s are called. It's not hard guys... And his accent is not even close to sounding Swedish...

i’ve always said that this movie would work more if she was fat, as someone who grew up fat a lot of what she was talking about and how her family (her dad in particular) react to height makes more sense if she was fat, like if she doesn’t take her guy best friend liked her and she doesn’t believe him because he was smaller than him and the guy that comes in was bigger than her but i’m a muscular way would make that part make sense, they way all then students where making fun of her height makes no sense and would be more believable if she was fat, the fact that her sister was a beauty queen would make more sense that it made her insecure, i could go on and on about it

My godsister is 14 and insecure about her height. She's not that tall really just 5'5 or so but she's taller than her friend group and her group is also full of thin girls. She's not fat but because her friends are shorter and have that thin lanky body type she's insecure about her height because she thinks it makes her stand out in a bad way when she's with her friends. So I think that specific type of insecurity is way more relatable to young teenage girls just getting into hs. Being tall period as a girl is just noticable. You'll get a "you're pretty tall" as a conversation starter but that's mostly it really. I have no idea how they thought they could stretch that concept out for an hour and however many minutes outside of the professional dance seeing that the actress experienced.

I don’t think the problem is that she didn’t have a reason to feel bad I mean girls do get seriously bullied over this it’s just that the plot is so bad it’s hard for people to take it seriously. it depends on where you’re from. Im from Puerto Rico and got seriously bullied over being just 5’9 and didn’t get a boyfriend until after high school cause all the boys were too insecure about their “manliness” to date me. I mean it’s the girls real story I don’t think it’s our place to say whether she had this experience or not. The writing of the film was so bad. They couldn’t think of realistic scenarios to make the story seem interesting. It’s so hard to follow because all the characters are so cartoonish. I think they needed to pick a tone. Like is this a comedy or is this a drama. If it was a comedy then they needed to be less dramatic and if it was a drama it needed to be nastier, like the bullying needed to be harsher. The characters are a joke like all the girls jumping on the new guy and stuff like what is that is this a preschool? Hahaha . I really wish they had made this good cause now everyone sees tall girls as whiny and not credible when a lot of us were actually seriously bullied. The relationships were not romantic and not something you want to follow. They had no reason to end up together like they had no natural transition it was like oh shit movie is about to end, let’s put these two together hahaha

I would've written it if Jodie had a medical condition like Marfan syndrome- her having a medical issue is the only reason i feel that that's why she would be bullied for her height. I really don't understand why anyone would bully a girl just for being tall, considering some of the most beautiful women in the world are supermodels who are over 5'10. I can only see Jodie being more disliked for being antisocial, dressing more masculine than the other girls shown in the film and knowingly being the other woman. I think her having a medical condition would've made her inscurity about her height more sense to me. She's only 6'1, it's not like she's as tall as Lady D!

I think I would have made the story be about body image/self perception. Use the same camera tricks they already used to make the actress seem even taller than she is, have her complain about her height and everybody around her constantly talk about it. Then, as the movie progresses and she learns to accept her body, slowly reveal how her perception is not reality: there are lots of other students at her high school that are the same height as/taller than her, there are a bunch of benefits that come with being tall, people notice/talk about her height way less than she thinks. I feel like a lot of people perceive their bodies a lot differently and often more negatively than they actually are, especially teenagers and especially with social media. Dealing with it through the ridiculous seeming issue of height might make it easier to talk about without sounding moralising and might give people the room to confront their own warped self-image without having to directly confront their specific issue with their body.

Ok i really wanted to write something about this movie. I didn`t watch it before, but now i really wouldn't lol. I am like 5`9, not as tall as girl in the movie, but i was taller than 90% girls in my school while also being "fat"(well i`m not thin, but some people acted like i was the fattest person on a planet). AND even with that i had a normal school life. Yes, sometimes people cringe-joked about me having no boyfriend(didn't hurt me very much to be honest) and being less pretty but it was it. I understand that every experience is different but my main problem as plus size taller than average girl(actually i think that i may be nonbinary but a girl to society at least) was getting normal clothes in my size, not extreme bullying for no reason. And tbh i quite like when i`m taller than other people, really not an insecurity of mine. I wonder how many girls feel that way lol because in media not being petite is always a ~problem~ that ruins your life

There’s a book called “the love interest” and it is by no means the most fantastically written book. However. It’s the one time I was like “oh, I like this love triangle”

the love triangles in these movies arent even love triangles. they're two people that are after another person, ( A and B like C, but C likes A) A real love triangle would be ( A likes B, B likes C, and C likes A) it goes in a circle. **or a triangle i guess lol**

I just realized that 6.1 is almost the same as my height Like I’m about 6 feet tall which is not very much, about 180 centimeters???? There are girls taller than me even at my school???? and I experience literally no oppression?????? If anything I constantly get compliments about my height and get told that I look like a model…

I don't find picking fights for the "honor of m'lady" cute. Main protagonist does not need "strong" man to be protected and she did not ask for this. I hope this trope/attitude will die by hellfire soon 😶

Am I the only one whos not annoyed with how much she complains about being tall? lol I mean if she's insecure and feels "oppressed" about it then that's just how she feels. Is she not allowed to have feelings?
@gabrielleduplessis7388

No, but where the problem lies is that she misses out on the people who actually care about her and pushes them away. She blames them for her problems instead of taking some of the blame herself.

I’m not annoyed with it either lol I don’t think that’s the movies problem. Yes girls get severely bullied over this cause it makes guys insecure but the plot was so stupid it makes it hard for people to take it seriously.
@BabyGirlTiny

The issue isn’t that she has feelings, the issue is that she thinks her issues are the worst type of issues anyone can have as if being tall is worst than anything else. If she didn’t say that, beat that line and vented her frustration of finding shoes, fine, but that’s not the worst thing in life

i agree so much with the love triangle thing. Is a trope done so poorly. The idea of a love triangle in tv would be more interesting if it actually felt like there will be a choice to be made. Most movies make it obvious of who the person will end up being with. Tv shows should explore more the idea of actually liking to people and the complications it will bring to the dynamic, how it can damage a friendship, etc. love your videos.

As a tall woman and an incredibly tall child (6’ at 12), I got comments literally every day of my life about how gigantic I was (never in a good way lol). The movie isn’t unrealistic in that way - I would get the same comments over and over again from people I had known since kindergarten lmao. Also it’s not unrealistic to that she had no one to date bc she was one of the tallest people in your school - I was in the top 5 tallest kids including men all 4 years. And (of course) men don’t really like to date women taller than them bc of their insecurities and beliefs around masculinity. Most people reviewing this movie act like being a tall woman isn’t a struggle at all and the movie is super exaggerated, but that’s because you’ve never been a woman over 6’ tall. You’re subject to masculinization, body shaming, and exclusion, especially if you’re not model-skinny. It’s not about being the most oppressed or anything, but I think it’s worth considering that you don’t know what you’re talking about because *you’re* an “acceptable” height for a woman. You’re passing a lot of judgement about an experience you know nothing about and IMO, being pretty misogynistic. Existing as a woman outside of the expected role of socially-acceptable euro-centric womanhood in any way (ie weight, height, beauty, race and ethnicity, etc.) comes with baggage and mistreatment.
