A load of 5 sweatshirts in my 1978 Maytag. Still working great at 39 years old. Made when all appliance manufacturers took pride in their product and made stuff that just worked trouble free for years.

Maytag's are awsome. I have a 38 year old maytag stackable washer/dryer with a flat panel - no knobs or buttons and I'm still using it. They knew what they were doing when they built them back in the 80's.
@tallboyyyy
@tallboyyyy Ай бұрын
Maytag built things that were robust and heavy duty yet still simple in how they actually worked which made for very dependable appliances. Now things are made so cheaply and non heavy duty that they can't hold up to even modest use. A lot of this is directly due to government regulations about how much water can be used or how much electricity can be consumed. If you use a little bit of water then the machine has to run longer using more electricity. So they put in smaller motors that have to work harder causing them to wear out quicker but use less electricity. The government needs to leave appliance building to the appliance manufacturers and stop micro managing private industry.

Hey Samsung check this out. Here's a real matching machine. A machine that was tested before it was sent out. My Aunt and Uncle had this type of Maytag lasted forever. My parents had a GE that lasted 30 years. I bought a house with a Speed Queen started leaking a month later replaced it with a Maytag. Gave it to a friend when I turned house into rental. Still works 15 years later. Moved into another house that had a Maytag set from the 90s so it was 25 years old moved a third time and contemplating taking it with me but new house had a Maytag Neptune front loader. Loved it. Died six months after we moved in. That was the only Maytag that quit on me that wasn’t worth repairing. Guess it was discontinued for a reason and all other front loader are bigger in cabinet size Went to Lowe’s and bought a Maytag again no problem yet. Dryer is from 1989. Runs fine and I can service it myself

However, if you love the way it cleans clothes, go ahead and just replace the little parts now and then the overall machine will not need major overhaul if you take care of it. Just the small tiny cheap parts now and then. It's a goddamn shame we don't have companies that make stuff like this anymore. Maytag is now owned by some other company i think.

It lasted a total of only 11 years!! The next day when I came home from high school, there was a brand new Maytag (1995) in the place of where the old clunker Speed Queen had crapped out.

I ordered them online. A lot, not all, are still available new from Whirlpool. The timer motor I replaced was still made when I replaced it, they no longer are. The tub brake and some bearings are still available as well as an internal water hose that had sprung a leak. The one major thing you can't get new is the transmission. You can replace the old long stroke transmission with the newer short stroke one that is still available but you would also need to replace the agitator with one designed for the short stroke or the machine won't clean as well.

If it's the same as mine the cup that holds the softener just lifts out of the agitator. Just use a couple fingers and put them in the openings at the top where the softener spins out and lift it up. It's just held in place by gravity, no clips or anything.

@@alisahouse2059 I've never tried taking it apart but have cleaned the lint filter with an old toothbrush to unclog some of the holes. I also dilute my softener with water, fill it half full with softener then top it off with water. I think it helps thin out the softener so it doesn't build up so fast. That said it does get grungy under the cup eventually anyway. I haven't found a quick easy way other than trying to scrub it out by hand.

@@tallboyyyy yeah even the shittiest top loaders back then were better than the absolute garbage we have now. Maytag WAS the best but even the cheap ass brands BACK THEN worked better than what we have now.

Real Maytag people. Not Whirltag. And also you have awesome water pressure.

yeah i remember back in the day water pressure in my house being like 10x the pressure i get now. Fucking water heaters and bullshit regulations probably fucked that up too. Trickles out. I wonder if that's the case, or if it was just because I was a kid. Maybe there are HE obama era regulations on water pressure too? Do you know?

LoL! @ No One. You sound about as frustrated as I feel today! Everything is tearing up in my house & auto all at the same damn time. I want/need stuff to last longer. My washer is only 7 years old and the repairman told me it would cost more than a new washer to repair it. ugh!

We do make stuff here only it's not consumer grade stuff, it's high tech/industrial stuff. I remember when I was a kid growing up in the 70s almost everything you owned was made in USA. A lot of it was built to last and you got many years of service but then again some of it was built like the stuff you get from China today. American quality ran the gamut from very well built to junk out of the box but you knew that by the price. If you paid more you knew you were buying quality. Now you can spend $15 for a toaster or $100 and they are both junk quality out of the box.

The Maytag washers now being manufactured (by Whirlpool) are nothing more than PLASTIC-JUNK with hardly any water in them!

As long as it works, why replace it? I have a 1981 Maytag that still works and didn't need it's first repair until last year. A new one would never beat that
