This is my next snare. You sir have one of the best recordings of this snare. How much post production processing did you apply?

Hi Joe, thank you so much for such fine reply. Actually I feel that even though I added some effect to my drummix, this snaredrum sounds like this for real. You can recognize the feel and sound when you hit it. It has some natural dryness and I like that. Often new snaredrums are to crisp and to much highends and snare sound if you ask me. I hope that you can try one.

This video sold me on the snare. You should get a kickback from Tama.

Hi Ryan, thank you so much for such fine comment. I have talked a lot with my local Tama distributor about the video, but I can´t remember if Tama actually saw this -I will find out. I´m glad you like it. Stay tuned - I hope to upload some new interesting stuff soon.

Absolutely love this video.....the Starphonic, that gorgeous Starclassic Walnut-Birch kit, and your playing style are all beyond cool. I was wondering if you had to pick a favorite, if you were forced to pick, which snare would it be.....the Starphonic or your S.L.P. Fat Spruce? I can't say this enough, but brother you got great taste. Hope you keep posting. TAMA rocks!

Dear Herbert, Thank you so much for your fine comment. It makes me happy, and it´s a good question. I would choose the Starphonic snare drum, but only because I feel it looks better in my setup, completely crazy answer I know, but it also means a lot to me. I´m actually very impressed by the Fat Spruce, especially the sounds which a rimshot brings..the shell has a nice sound and "edge" - but then again, the Starphonic always impresses me. And I can use it for many things. I will choose the Starphonic. I´m so glad to hear that you like my setup and video, and I promise to make more in the future. The only reason why I do not upload many videos to KZbin, is simply because I´m waiting until I feel I have some content which makes sense. I have some really exciting projects going on, and can´t wait to show. Hopefully within a month or so....

They are great snare drums for the price. I've said this before on other videos, but this snare drum comes alive if you put a thin triple flanged hoop on the top (I bought a cheap 1.6ml hoop of eBay for $20). Great video by the way

I sold It because of the hoops. Now I think I should have tried with triple flange hoops.

Hey! Thanks for the vid! Can you give some tips how to tune the snare in best way ? Or how did you tune it?
@ThomasHolmen
@ThomasHolmen 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stefano -Thanks for your comment -I hope that you like the video - I will say that the tension of the snare in this video, is medium to high. I always have my snareside/bottomhead tight and highpitched, because it will give a more precise and balanced feel and sound. It always a matter of taste, but personally I do not fell that a to loose head in the bottom of a snare is a good solution. Crank it up, and then adjust on the batter side. I never have my snare very tight like the young Police/Stewart Copeland even though it was an amazing sound and crack, but I like the feel of a batterhead which is still a little bit smooth. Because this Tama drum in the video has a natural dry sound, I can crank it up some more than I normally do, and it still has a great dry crisp overall sound. I hope you can use some of this info -it´s difficult to explain tuning and so on, but please reply if you need some more information. I think the best you can do no matter which drum and who the drummer is, is to spend some time trying different tunings and heads on your drum. I do not do that enough, and actually it´s so easy to hear and feel right away, when you do adjustments and it´s a great way to learn your drum.

Yes this is one of the videos I was thinking about. This is my Tama Starclassic Walnut and birch kit in Piano black. I feel these drums are the best you can buy and play especially when you think about the price level. I´m using a 10", 12" racktom, 14" and 16" floor tom and 22" kick. And of course this Starphonic PAL 146 snare. Cymbals from left to right: just above my floortoms it´s a Zildjian FX Stack hat 14" , Zildjian 19" K Custom Dark Special Dry Trash Crash ( amazing cymbal) then it´s a Zildjian 21" A Custom Anniversary Ride - on the right we start with my favourite crash the Zildjian A Custom 19" crash ( I´m using both the 19" and the 18" ) and then another amazing cymbal, the Zildjian K EFX 18" - under these you will find a 8" A Custom spalsh and my Zildjian FX stack hat in 12" and my hihat is a combination of a 14" Zildjian K Custom Dark Special Dry FX top and a A Custom 14" bottom - I hope this is useful info -if not please ask

Sorry, I forgot one very important drum -my first "tom" is one of my Tama Octobans. I have the low pitch set, and I´m using one of them as my first tom

I have a question....is it possible to change to a tama die-cast hoops?
@ThomasHolmen
@ThomasHolmen 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, Thanks for asking. Actually the hoops which comes with the PAL146 is a kind of die cast hoops just a little bit smaller. But I think it’s possible to change to die-cast but then you can not use the claw hooks with is a special design for the hoop on the PAL146. The other day I tried to mount a standard hoop on the drum because I wanted to get a little bit more open sound but a little bit less “crack” and thats was actually ok. So thats also a possibility

Is the aluminium Starphonic still made in Japan?

Hi John, I actually do not know, if Tama produce this snare in Japan or ? I think it´s only the Star drums they produce in Japan, but I´m not sure. Anyway, it´s an outstanding snaredrum.

@@ThomasHolmen thanks for the reply. Yes, it sounds awesome and has some cool features. I'm trying to decide between the Starphonic and the Yamaha Recording custom but I think I prefer the Tama currently. Some forums say the Starphonics are made in Japan but the posts are all a couple of years old so not sure if that's still the case. Nice chops btw 👍

@@ThomasHolmen Thanks a million. I had emailed a couple of shops to ask about this and they never got back to me, read numerous reviews and forums online, many of which were contradictory. I put one comment on your channel and I get the answer straight away! You've done arguably the best review I've seen on this drum too. Will be ordering one soon 👍
