When I was in the foster care system as a teenager, Animal Crossing did just that. I was one of the only nonwhite kids in my grade and I had very few friends. Animal Crossing gave me a place where I could get away from all of those feelings of alienation and loneliness, and even connect with other players online. I could create my own world when the real world felt so bleak.

It was precious being able to see such an important game to you explained in this amount of loving detail! I genuinely hope that the next animal crossing game will have some return to form, as the stories your villagers can create through their conversations are some of the most grounding parts of the gameplay, to make towns feel alive rather than as set dressing. Only time will tell, but at the very least New Horizon’s run-away success means Animal Crossing will always have a place in Nintendo’s roster of games, so our friends will continue to accompany us on many more adventures yet to come.❤

An hour and a half video about Animal Crossing is always appreciated. Just finished the video and I have to say that as a long time fan of the series, this is one of the best retrospective videos about the series, mostly because it was your retrospective. The parts with WW almost made me cry and the nostalgia trip I got for both New Leaf and the OG game got me so excited. I did not have the same restraints with the GCN codes, but the great thing about growing up is seeing how else you can do things in your town.

A long form Animal Crossing video, what a treat! I have to say as a long time Animal Crossing fan this is easily one of the best retrospectives out there, mostly because I really enjoyed seeing you go into such affectionate detail about why AC is so important to you. Your story with WW in particular was very touching. Those of us who care about AC all seem to have similar yet different connections to the franchise. For me, I've never really struggled with making acquaintances, but making genuine deep friendships has always been very difficult. I've only ever had between 1-3 close friends at any one time. So in that sense I resonate and as cliche as it sounds I have always felt a bit different and alienated from most of my peers. WW was there for me in my lonlier moments when I felt I didn't fit in. Unfortunately my OG WW cart has a bit of a tragic story. One day when I went to the beach, I didn't realise I had left the cart in my short pockets from the car journey and went into the sea wearing them. Whilst it miraculously does still work, it has a tendency to freeze every now and then so I consider it pretty unplayable now.

When I was isolated from the other kids in my class, my siblings, my peers... Animal Crossing was there for me too. I would send "letters to my future self" describing how I felt at the time. After watching the video, I will say that I collected the amiibo cards when they were first launched in the new leaf era. I had a lot of fun trading dupes with people on tumblr and collected them like I would pokemon cards. I have every single one and all the amiibo figures because I love collecting things, and they have in game features. I always give people villagers for free or for very cheap on Nookazon because I have those powers, and when I got the Raymond card I gave him to as many people as possible. I think of them as a cool thing to have, but not necessary. I also like to give people stuff and villagers, so having all of them is nice. The online trading is even easier than with new leaf, so taking advantage of the community is helpful to not have to buy amiibo.

I've had the same Wild World town since childhood, I logged on last month for the first time in over five years only to see a goodbye letter from my favourite villager, Rosie. Luckily I'd already acquired her picture (along with Cherve and Amelia), but to lose the first villager I ever saw in my original 15+ year old town was deeply, truly saddening. It ruined my evening to be honest, silly as that sounds. My nintendo DS, Studio Ghibli, and Peanuts got me through some of the hardest times in my childhood and adolescence. Animal Crossing Wild World and it's villagers are the only life-long friends I've ever had, being a kid who spent a lot of time being sick, anxious, and who moved cross-country several times. What Animal Crossing has provided to lonley, dispossessed, struggling kids can never be understated. It's a genuinely beautiful franchise and even now- as a fully formed, sociable and worldly adult I see it's value, and will always be thankful for everything it's done for me. Great video btw Tama, been loving these recent looser, long-form vids!

I can really relate to connecting with friends you can’t spend time with in person through games. My best friend in high school lived several states away and we would play Minecraft and other PC games like TF2 over Skype so that it didn’t feel like we were so far away. I also didn’t have a ton of great friendships that I really related with at school every day, so having those social aspects through games, even ones that you didn’t have to play at the same time to enjoy “together.”

The way you described Wild World is how I feel about Digimon. I spent 98% of my formative years alone. 6th-12th was very lonely for me and the franchise filled that void. I actually made a friend in the 8th grade because of it. I went to the library so I could go online and see if a fanfiction I was reading had been updated. All the computers were taken so I was going to leave when I noticed a girl was looking at a Digimon fansite that was reviewing a recent episode in Japan. I asked about it and we instantly became friends. We would exchange notes between classes, trade printed out fanfiction, and would meet on Gaia Online or Neopets to discuss Digimon. Thanks to Digimon I've met my closest friends who I consider family.

I agree, cranky villages just feel so much more human to me than the other people. Like people dont realize strangers ARE mean to you because they do not trust you. Once you earn their trust they can become your lifeline and safety net and that takes EFFORT which old animal crossing games used to do by being digestible for that kind of life lesson.

My history with Animal Crossing is actually fairly recent. I bought New Leaf in early 2017 largely because I wanted a game to play with friends at the time, though I didn't really "get" how AC was supposed to be played, and I fell off pretty fast. Fast forward to 2020 and I got New Horizons day one, and had a blast playing alongside friends, trading, visiting each other's islands and all... But that isn't really why the series is so important to me. My mom, who passed away earlier this year, was a pretty big fan of games herself. She loved Zelda, Metal Gear, Dragon Quest and many more, but like a lot of people in 2020, she found herself suddenly stuck at home for long periods of time. Since I was an "essential worker", I still had to work every day, so I asked her to check on certain things/events in ACNH for me that I would otherwise miss being at work. Eventually, she wanted to make her own island, but we found out that, as I'm pretty sure is infamous now, it's one island per console, so she just moved in on mine. It was a ton of fun though, and in 2021 I saved up and got her her own Switch Lite! She was so excited to start her own island, heck she got it to five stars at lightning speed without even time traveling! In her last couple months, she had some problems playing games without getting headaches, so I would keep up with her islands for her and let her know what was going on. After she passed I honestly considered just stopping altogether, but that just seemed wrong, and now it's become something of a comfort. Sorry this comment got so long and kind of sad, but it isn't something I ever feel bad about, quite the opposite in fact. Now that I think about it, she actually got me a copy of Wild World a year or two ago on one of her many thrift store adventures and I never did start it up. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime

New Horizons definitely has gacha design built-in - and I forgot that it started with the Welcome Amiibo update for New Leaf! Multiple currencies (bell VS Nook Miles and Tickets), taking real active time to acquire currency used for pulls (dailies + in this case buying NMT one by one), and spending real money to get more pulls is an option (in this case, amiibo card packs, a separate system that converges into the same potential gain). It would take very little gameplay design effort, to inject a real money pipeline into the Miles system. Am I focusing on the wrong aspect of the video? It was a lovely video, Tama.

I'm looking forward to the full English Translation of e+, the GameCube version was my first Animal Crossing so seeing the "expansion" sounds great! I never played Wild World as a kid, even if I really wanted, but I remember lurking yhe forums and reading everything up on it, I did manage to play it after I played New Horizon and honestly I think WW really holds up! Sadly I never played City Folk at all, I do want to try it! I was obsessed with new Leaf. I think it gave us just enough control but still not enough. Lots of fun mini games too! NOW NEW HORIZONS, I was obsessed with it for a while and I did enjoy my time, but when that Honeymoon phase was over I really noticed the flaws. I think they just gave us way to much control and the villagers being so bland kinda fits into that? They are just aesthethic!

For me new horizons is my favorite game in general, because the whole teraforming and design aspect is really unique and fun, and i spent literal years making use of all the space on my island and making it as aesthetically pleaseing as possible. I think it would be nice if they made villagers more interesting but if the next installment scales back on any of the design aspects ill be really dissapointed because its basically the only game with this kind of gameplay and has the rpg pokemon like elements I like. I've always wanted a pokemon game where I could just design spaces and interact with my pokemon in ways outside of battling, and this really scratched that itch.

I used to love cranky villagers--not because I wanted to be verbally abused, but because it felt really good to slowly earn their trust and respect and see them warm up to you. When everyone worships you immediately, you feel like a self-insert in a fanfic or something. It makes me very aware how fake it all is.
