Very much so, it is a new spin on the classic Tamiya style of scale vehicles. Overall it is a great buggy, juts a few quirky things I am not sure if they really did their best effort in. The front springs make no sense to me and should have has a few more coils to them to make them right. The trap door for the battery compartment could have had some changes to make it better. I wish I could be a QC tester for them! LOL! Don't see that happening though! LOL!

Thanks Keith! Some of the things in there made me scratch my head but I guess all of them do really. I am surprised you did not pick one up just to have in the NIB collection since it is the first of the chassis from them. It was an interesting build being something new so I did enjoy that and overall it is a good buggy. Just need to tighten the diff! Take care my friend and hope things are winding down for you and all the hobby room/museum is done or getting done!

Thanks Peter! I knew I did not want the tire up there and I was not keen on leaving it wide open so some scrap lexan to the rescue! It is a quick and easy thing to do and make the white from the hood to the roof to the back nicely to tie it all together.

Great recap and run Addam. I like that you went the brushed way. This was essential for me to know and one of the reasons why I put this buggy on the long line. With the 5th wheel I'm complete with you, and I never understand why they promoted it, but didn't put it into the kit. Your rear cover looks good and is an awesome idea.
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Жыл бұрын
Thanks Dirk! I am still old school and prefer brushed motors and it runs well on the 17t. The buggy is geared low so you do need a faster motor to get it going. I would say the 15-17t is just about right for it. Anything lower and you are just going to be fighting wheel spin the whole time. The extra tire being promoted but not included was kind of dumb but at least it was not on the box like that and just an "option". I like the smooth panel on there and make the white flow from the front to the roof to the rear nicely. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Sadly no slipper clutch installed in this one yet. It was the diff slipping. I am not a fan of the ball diffs. I am not that refined a driver I could tell the difference or not in the performance and I just want to build the trans once and not have to worry about it again! I am like you and even if it had a slipper clutch I would snug it down a bit more than called for and it would rarely if ever actually slip! LOL! I have never had a gear train issue from it. May have popped an axle or two of the years on the traxxas trucks like that but those were cheap and easy to replace!

It is a sharp looking buggy and I am glad I went with the purple, it looks cool. I was annoyed the diff was slipping as i was having fun with it but had to call it quits to keep from ruining it. LOL! Fiddle-fart has been a saying my whole life, something I picked up from my parents! LOL! Did you also go with t e purple on yours? I think it looks great in a load of colors honestly, one of the few you can really get wild with. It was either going to do this or the metallic green. I actually just ordered the gear diff and slipper clutch for it and I am going to get those installed soon and get away from the ball diff all together. Plus extra room for stickers!

Thanks John! Since this one is a bit more of a pricier kit from them I expect a bit more thought and refinement and for the most part it if but there were a few things that confused me on why they did it like that. As always all of the kits have their quirks and oddities to them that makes us scratch our heads, so this is no different! Maybe if the release something else on this chassis it will make more sense! It did turn out nice in the end and I am very happy with the looks of it! It drove well but the pesky ball diff cut it short. I have the gear diff on order as well as the slipper clutch so once those arrive and are installed I will get it back out! Take care John and have a great week!

The long wait took some wind out of my sails but it is still great looking and it ran pretty well too. I ordered the correct gear diff and the slipper clutch to replace that pesky ball diff, not a fan of those at all!! Once that gets here from Japan I will tear into and get that replace and then get it back out on the track. I think it will be a bit better and faster once that is done. I really through the rear panel looked pretty slick and made the white on the hood and roof flow nicely all the way back. I would love to have a testing gig like that but I would probably have to move to Japan to qualify as they are super secret about all there stuff so I doubt an invites will be coming my way! LOL! This is an excellent review. The car looks great. I like the purple and modified wheels. I thought it look great after the run with a little dirt on it. I think pointing out the issues you had with the car will be helpful. Out of all the things you pointed out, the front springs are baffling to me. I am sure Tamiya has many, many springs it could have chosen. Like I have said and heard from others, I don't understand some of the things Tamiya does. You did an excellent job on the build.

I am glad you enjoyed it. I do like the way it turned out and it looks nice out in he sun. Sadly when I took the pics of it the sun was nowhere to be found! The metallic looks great in the sun! When I am recording these I am just going off the cuff and telling you all what I think, never thought out or scripted for sure. Some times when I am editing it I realize I am kind of down on things and seem to be overly critical of stuff. I guess being an all new kit and a modern release I figured they would be able sort stuff out properly before sending it out the door. The springs were silly, they could have easily fixed that issue from the start by adding a few more coils to it. I have seen springs made, it is not difficult to add in a few more wraps! Overall it is a cool and good kits, just like all of them it has its quirks and oddities!

It ran some pretty respectable lap times out there; that 17t HH motor definitely seemed like a good choice! I agree, give folks a gear diff option; I know that’s what I prefer! A ton of great information and insight you supplied us with Addam! When it was announced, I knew I wanted it, but the longer the release wait was the more my excitement died down. I imagine I’ll still get one at some point, it’s just not at the top of my list anymore. Yours looks awesome!👍😊

It ran times right there with the Gorgon! LOL! Not sure if that is bad for the BBX or great for the Gorgon! LOL! It did right around average for first run of a 2wd buggy honestly. If the ball diff had not been slipping I would have pushed it harder and it would have done a bit better. I get there is a appealing stigma to "Oh it has a ball diff so it must be a race buggy" but I am not a fan and I want to build the trans once and never have to think about it again!! Tamiya needs to stop announcing things 6 or 7 months in advance! especially when they could not deliver them in time. Then the whole mess with Horizon/Tower made it worse! I am still waiting on my Boomerang... Seem like the most recent stuff has a shorter arrival time so maybe the learned but I doubt it. I am sure at the beginning of 2024 they will announce more stuff we will have to wait 6 months for.

The long time getting it and then having to watch everyone across the world build and run theirs there was little excitement left when doing mine. I still have a smile one my face out running it until I could tell the diff was slipping. I cleaned it up and it is waiting for me to tear it down and tighten that up. The BBX is a cool one and it drives really well. Light years better than the Hornet (I do love the Hornet!) as it is a much more refines design. The build of the buggy goes well, not really any gotcha moments really. Fitting the electronics and cutting out the body are the more tedious tasks. I have seen them painted dozens of colors and they all look good which is not something that can be said about others. To be honest I believe I got the Hornet in 89 maybe 1990 and I got it from my grandmother because I was into models. Well, long story short, she went to a local hobby shop where we live in Orange County New York and told the hobby dealer that her grandson like to build models and did he have any big ones and he sold her that saying it was just a kit car. Needless to say I was ecstatic. Every birthday after that was a total let down. But I it took me about 2 weeks with my dad and brothers it was the best gift ever. Like I said I still run it. I run my cats like you do👍🏻 I don’t best on them or use ramps like the average basher enthusiast it doesn’t make sense to me. Why would you want to break it you just got it. If like to set up a track like yours I think that’s an ideal yard. Thanks bud take care.

Great review Addam! Tamiya being Tamiya I'm afraid, something we are used to by now.... Just can't work out how delayed some of their releases can be, it's certainly not a good business model, but hey, we keep buying them non the less! Loving that livery, and the custom body panel on the rear mate. It's great to see so many people straying from the standard box art, and getting creative on this one. Seems as though electronics space is a bit of an issue with many of their new kits, which seems kinda weird as these days all the electrical components are smaller, and there's less of them! (no longer needing a MSC, second servo etc) You brought up a good point regarding the battery lead clip, and the allocation for a commonly used switch.... something that bugs me to, and I'm sure pretty much everyone else who builds their kits to!! You joke about offering to help them with these design flaws, but in all honesty they have been doing this 47 years now.... surely an organisation as large as Tamiya must have many, many staff in research and development that would have flagged up these issues many years ago?? 🤔 Don't get me wrong, I love Tamiya, but their logic on so many of their business modules just doesn't make any sense!! She looked great around the track, posting some nice times..... but boy I don't envy you with the clean up on that one!! 🤣 I thought those mud guards on the TD2 /TD4 were awful..... but, maybe I'm seeing some logic now! 😉 Cheers for the very honest, and factual run down on this lovely model..... I'm still tempted to say the least! 👍 👍 👍

Hey there James! Tamiya certainly marches to the beat of their own drum and always has. You are right though, we are kind of a slave to them as building kits nowadays is very limited to them and some from Kyosho and that's about it. I still wonder why the do so many odd things. I m sure they have plans for something else on this chassis where the choice here may be explained there. All kits have some oddities and quirks about them that make you wonder why it was done this way so this one is no different! It is a cool looking buggy and it drives nice, too bad it start slipping the diff and cut it short. I ordered the gear diff and the slipper clutch son once both of those get here i will tear it down and replace the diff with one I don't have to worry about in the future. The slipper clutch is one of those since I am in there upgrades! Take care my friend and enjoy the rest of your week!

@@AddamsPlayground The slipping diff is to be expected mate..... these usually need to be tightened up after a bedding in period of a run or two. And yeah, they are a bit of an inconvenience! Good luck with the gear diff and slipper fella, it's nice that we have the option to be able to mess about with these kinda things. Being able to fine tune things to our own desired specs/preference is one of the reasons I prefer kits to all these ready to run things that you see so much theses days! I have seen lots of different colors and they all look pretty good! Yeah I called it quits before I ruined it, I am not a fan of the ball diffs at all! I just got done building one these. I still have to paint the body panels. That back plate that you added is a great idea and I am definitely going to do that as well! It really adds to the look of the buggy! On another note, I did not enjoy this build as much as I thought I would. In my own opinion this did not feel like I was building a Tamiya kit. I hated building the shocks the most. I also agree with you on the front springs. They could have just used longer springs and it would have look much cooler. I also don't like how the electronics are so crammed into the chassis. So overall I didn't enjoy the build as much as I wanted to, but the end result is an amazing looking buggy! It is a nice kit and it looks and run really well. It is a on the pricier side but I am glad you found a deal on one. The only issues I have with it is the tight quarters to get the electronics in and remain hidden and the need for a battery lead extension when using most ESCs as it is a pain to try and hook it up without one. Once you get the electronics in you are good and power the lead extension is a minor thing. Have fun with yours!

Yeah, man, it looks great with mud on it! Ha ha, nice that you included those after run photos... Yeah, I was in a bit of pain watching that run footage, definitely some slipping going on, I thought it was the slipper clutch that wasn't tight enough... Oddly enough, it might have helped the handling, not too much rear end action, it did some decent lap times, probably comparable to the Gorgon, ha ha! I agree with you, I also much prefer gear differentials. But I think I am that single one RC enthusiast who doesn't love the HW1060, ha ha... Great to see you finally got it and got it going, I have same syndrome as you, the hype drops after a while... Was a bummer with that hobby shop and stuff...
@AddamsPlayground

Yeah it was a mess after the run, It seems the track is always either too dry and dusty or too wet and muddy. It is hard to get out there in that perfect in between times! I wish it was the slipper, but I did not put one in it. Balls are frustrating and I don't really see the point unless it is a legit race buggy to have one. I think 99% of the people that have cars with them wouldn't really notice a difference in performance between a ball and a gear diff. Sadly it was getting times in line with the Gorgon! Funny but kind of bad too. I like the 1060, and I think so many other folks do as for $20-25 you cannot beat it. Now there are a lot of knockoffs out there on places like eBay that will go up in smoke in a heartbeat so you do have to be careful where you get them from. The excitement of getting slowly disappeared as the release date got pushed back and then the hobby shop snafu pushed it another month. By the time I had gotten it, I had already watched dozens and dozens of unboxing, build and run videos of it so there was no magic in doing mine. same thing is happening with the Boomerang as I still have not gotten that and no idea when it will be here.

If you wanted to upgrade it and to go with brushless then you are probably going to sink more into it anyways so that is an expected expense. Congrats on getting one and you will enjoy it! Just take the steps one by one and double check everything before moving on and you will be just fine. Tamiya has probably the best instruction out there. It is only once in a while they make you scratch you head. I thought about LEDs but space for the light controller is very limited so I opted against trying to cram that in there! Overall it was a good build and it ran well, just need to tighten up the ball diff, well replace it as soon as the new one shows up!

Very true, they all have some sort of quirk or missed opportunity with them. I would love to be a QC tester for them, I don't see them offering that position to me though!! LOL! I am sure they will do something else on it but not sure if it will be another cage buggy or some sort of clam-shell top deck to make into another style?? It is not normal for them to make a single use chassis, they have built an empire in reusing and recycling parts and chassis of almost all their stuff. It is very rare we see a single chassis from them. we will have to wait and see. Hopefully it does not have a 7 month lead time on the next one! LOL!

Thanks Trey! It is a great looking buggy and very unique. It drives well but I am ditching the ball diff. I found out the correct gear diff and will be plopping that in once it gets here. I will be much more content with it then knowing it is goof proof and I can just drive it without listening for slipping! Also grabbed the slipper clutch for it so while I have it torn down I'll upgrade to that as well. I would love to have a testing gig like that but I would probably have to move to Japan to qualify as they are super secret about all there stuff so I doubt an invites will be coming my way! LOL!

Regarding the ESC mounting: problem is that Tamiya mainly produces for Japan, where they usually run brushed or VERY mild brushless setups, with LiFe batteries. Tamiya racing leagues are pretty big there and they only use Tamiya stuff for those.

The light pods all come with the kit and they will all take LEDs. I did not install a LED kit in mine as there is limited space already for stuff and I did not wat the hassle of finding a place to put it and route all the wiring out of sight. Any of the inexpensive light controllers you can find on Amazon should work fine. Placement and wire routing I am not sure about since I have not done it but with plenty of zip tied you should able to without too much extra time. Cool Addam! Glad to see you got it built. Like you it took so long to get here it kinda got put on the back burner. I’ll get to it but it’s not actually a priority now. I’ve planned my time for other things. Servo…what are you using? My gripe with the low profile servos are they are a rediculous amount of $$$$ I got a cheap one off Amazon for $27.00, I think, just so I’ve got something but the prices have been a bit of a turn off. Some are almost $200 each. Anyways..great stuff! I’m sure over time you’ll have more to say about it once it’s really run in. I love the look of the car and I’m very happy that Tamiya have finally come out with something truly new. Maybe the new version of the kit that’s coming out with the included hop ups will fix the front springs issue?

I can buy a lot of replacement servos for $200 LOL!!!I have them in several other kits and have had not issues. I am sure it ill hold up fine in here too. Those front springs really had me wondering about what they are doing. I assume the are re-used ones from another kit but why?

yeah very good question. I guess i'll find out the same issue when I finally get to mine. Maybe I'll have some ideas then. Thanks for the servo input...I'm with you 100%...I can do a lot with $200 in other areas so I'm not going to blow it on just one servo lol - There's definitely been some overall gripes on the gear box so far...the ball diff, make sure you get the slipper clutch for it etc. so I guess time will tell. Hey Addam! I sure do admire your BBX build. I built mine a little back with an XL-5 esc & Titan 12t motor. I plan to paint mine here soon with pink paint splatter and purple. Hoping it turns out okay. Also, I think they used the ball diff as a minor acting slipper system since the top shaft does not have a set up for a slipper. Otherwise, a gear diff would be amazing!
