I've had my Tamiya TT-02B Neo Scorcher 4WD buggy for over 5 years, and in that time it's been used and abused with hundreds of battery packs run in it. So my good friend Rob Brennan came round and we had a bit of a chat about the buggy, good and bad points, and whether we would recommend that others should buy one. I hope you enjoy our little natter, and hopefully find something useful along the way! Thanks for watching, take care and happy RCing! :-)

My neighbor's kid had one of these.. He drove and drove and drove. That thing was unstoppable. Great overview here guys and lots of interesting info. Anyone who has been here a while knows that these rigs are truely ran hard. so if anyone knows the value on something like this .. It's you guys. Thanks for sharing it. Thumbs up

Thanks for the very kind words, Nick - much appreciated my friend. Yeah, these buggies are pretty indestructible, as your neighbour's kid has also proven! Mine has taken more abuse than any of my other cars, and is still good to go. Cheers for the awesome support, Bro. :)

Hey Mark man, I hope you never stop doing these kind of technical RC review videos. I'm sure many RC veterans could learn something from this, so to a newcomer this type of content can prove invaluable. Anyone who has put a buggy through 300-400 battery runs is more than qualified to inform an audience about the pro's and con's of the said buggy - and it shows in this video. Also with all those upgrades this chassis looks like a real warhorse. It's unsurprising that it's still in one piece and functioning after so many runs. And my word, that rear spoiler that you built out of aluminium. I love that. All through the video I was thinking it was an unpainted piece of lexan with stickers on it, and then boom, you tell us it's metal. Brilliant upgrade. Really enjoyed watching this one pal....👍🏻👍🏻.

Thank you so much, mate - it's great to have such an encouraging comment - as you know, it's hard to understand what youtube and viewers like, so it's great to know you think I'm on the right track! I just ordered a TT-02B Dual Ridge off of eBay (because I wanted to be a hipster and get the more unusual body design). The plan is to make it a project car, but a more unusual one. Using the numerous aftermarket upgrades available for this platform and the TT-02 touring car, I'm going to try to turn it into a competitive carpet racing buggy and see if I can show up all the Associateds and XRAYs. If I end up winning races, hopefully the guys who spend thousands on their cars won't kill me over this. /s

Well hello mate. That was most enjoyable indeed. I had been looking to see if you had a new vid and luckily this popped up in the pre tea drink time. I was trying to think if I could add anything to your excellent review and I can't think of much. I have had bevel gears break on these. The TT-02B I have currently has the metal gears which were pretty expensive but don't click under breaking like the plastic ones did. I've got the metal steering linkage and it is better but there is still some play. I agree that with the standard motor it's too predictable and it needs more power to be fun. I'm surprised that somebody hasn't created a range of indestructible rear wings for these things. Anyway I hope that Friday is treating you well. There is an RC session planned for Sunday. Just hoping that it isn't too busy as the traffic heading south today was mental. I need to get some dinner to soak up this strong IPA. Cheers for now mate 😀

Pete Wylie RC Videos I seem to break something on mine every time I take it out, so it doesn’t get to go out very often. The latest thing is a loud clicking as it decelerates, like you described. I couldn’t work out what the noise was, I couldn’t replicate the noise with the gears, so I thought it might be the prop shaft. I have gone and invested in an aluminium shaft and end thingumies (and motor mount, but mostly because I stripped the screw threads in one of the holes...). At least it’ll give me an excuse to give it a proper strip down and a proper look when they come (I only ordered them this morning). If my problem is the same as yours, what should I be looking for?
@PeteWylieRC
@PeteWylieRC 3 жыл бұрын
@@KingBollock hello mate. It's the bevel gears at the ends of the prop shaft that click. They just get a bit rounded off. The metal prop shaft set may hold them in place more securely but what I did was to go all metal with the gears. Not cheap but it doesn't click now. Ric had the same thing too. I think they are ok until you have a lot of traction like with the spiked tyres on grass. My rally car TT-02 is fine because the tyres don't grip so much. Hope this helps 😀

First of all, great videos! I have never seen such a nice comment section under a video. Your calm and great way of presenting things seems to attract such an awesome audience! I have finally fallen and also decided to get back into the hobby with an Tamiya TT02-B. As far as I understand the Neo Scorcher and the Plasma Edge 2 are the same? But as I’m only seeing offers of the Plasma Edge 2 with the TBLE02s ESC and im planning to upgrade to brushless I think I’m gonna go with this one! Is there any difference that anyone in the community here is aware of? Will the GPM Parts set also work on this one and do I need anything else to install it other than the 8PC set? Thanks to anyone who might see this in advance. Thanks Mark for making such detailed and great videos. I can’t wait to throw it around in some dirt!

I sure wouldn't keep doing this if it wasn't for them! Cool that you too are getting back into this fascinating hobby - and the TT-02B is a great way to start. Yeah, the Plasma Edge 2 is exactly the same as the Neo, excluding the body, of course! It will work well with a 13.5T sensored brushless motor. I couldn't find an 8PC set online, but the individual GPM TT-02B parts fit fine. Hope someone else might pick up on this comment. Good luck with the buggy, and thanks again! :-)

Aren’t they the ones with the all-in-one-metal-piston, with no holes? They just feel odd and springy compared to let’s say ... the DT-02 (Sand Viper/Desert Gator). I might remember wrong ... @@MarkBryanRC So cool if the Neo Scorcher got the plastic pistons. Yeah, I am not too sure of I remember correctly, but the white shocks on my Dual Ridge XB definitely doesn't feel very good (for off road purposes anyway) and I think these are the metal ones. If I remember correctly the DF-02 shocks feels even worse. Just build the shocks on the Stadium Thunder, they are excellent, with the 1-2-3-hole & plastic options. And with very suitable springs. I love the TT-02B. The Neo Scorcher was the first TT-02 i bought after i started with RC's again in 2014. Now i have 13 TT02's but only one of them is a B version. Hi Mark, thanks so much for creating these detailed videos! Do you think it would be possible to put a rally car body such as a Subaru Impreza onto a TT02B chassis? As far as I can see, the TT02B has two mounting poles for the body, whereas a rally car body usually needs four mounting poles... But maybe it would be somehow possible to install four poles onto this chassis anyways? The back part where normally the wing is located probably also wont fit perfectly for a rally body I assume, but I guess one could cut out a portion of the body for that. Cheers and thanks again!
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andreas! You are very welcome, Sir! Hmmm... I think it is possible to mount a rally body on the TT02B, although the rear shock tower is very high, so some bodies will be tricky. The real issue is the track (width between the left and right wheels). Standard rally body is 190mm wide. I think the wheels would stick outside the body!!! Look for a TT02-S chassis, similar suspension design to the TT02B, but 190mm wide! All the best! 😎

The only thing bad I can say about the TT02B is the fiberglass filled nylon gears can't take 3s and a lot of traction offroad(but not many running on 3s I suppose). I broke the internal rear bevel/pinion gear(the one at the end of driveshaft inside rear end gear case) broke within a minute of using a 3s offroad. I put all metal rear gearbox gears including the diff. Also put in a metal spur and motor pinion gear. My son bashes his TT02B and it regularly sees jumps off my ramp for my Arrma and nothing has broke in 3 months of hard use.

I would certainly recommend the TT-02B!! 👍👍 I mentioned to you over a year ago, about converting my TT-02 into a Buggy! In my case, I'm never going to have that Car the way I want it.... never going to find or afford the Body I want. So for the cost of a couple of Parts Trees - I can have a TT-02B!!! 😁 Now that I've gotten a close look at your Buggy, you have the same FAT Plastic Dogbones that I have, just longer! You and Rob were talking about how well the Dogbones wear, for "Plastic"... But they're not really Plastic, are they? They're FRP - and that Fibreglass in the mix makes them stronger than Aluminium!!! Hence the long, hard life. So... To convert mine, I need A Arms, Turnbuckles and longer Dogbones. And likely a different Bulkhead. I've fitted CVDs in front. That may be tricky, because I'm sure I no longer have the front outer Cups. Shocks are also no issue. I've got several 90-100mm Shocks from my Trucks. SMOOTH too! And UNLIKE Cars and Trucks, Buggy Bodies are cheap as chips. This can happen! I can highly recommend the Yeah Racing Steering Rack Kit. ZERO SLOP!! Fully Ball Raced. I love them. Also GMade Aeration Shocks. Some on the TamiyaClub Forums said were nearly as good as top line TRF Shocks!! Won't break the Bank either. You know, I always thought that the DF-01 was just the Buggy variant of the TT-01. The bits in the middle sure look the same. 😲 MAYBE it was, and Tamiya just gave them a different classification. Maybe I'm dead WRONG!! 😜 Anyway, I'm rambling! BIG NEWS today!! 😁 Please check out my replies to your Comment on my Video. Completely dead in the water without.... I feel bad, a very nice Guy on the TamiyaClub Forums sent me Wheels and Tires, BUT they're 1.9s... I thanked him of course, but they're entirely too big. 😞 Making my usual array of "non standard" Mods... I'm adamant about NOT having Body Posts sticking out of the Rear Window!!! So I've been concocting a Magnet Mount for the Rear, and decided I'm going to Cut out the Rear Window with holes in it, and gluing a Lexan Sheet in its place. 😲😉 I've got the whole Steering sorted - with SCRAP Axial SCX10 Bits!!! Including learning that an Upper Axle Link from the SCX10 is the SAME length as the Tamiya Link, from Servo to Steering Rack!!! 😁😁😁 Stronger too. I want this DONE so badly. It's WAY too HOT to walk the 3/4 mile to the nearest spot I can run my Crawlers... But the M Machine I can simply walk out my Door and run her in the Courtyard!! 😊 Bryan is Mandie's FIRST Baby to look like his Father! I mean OK, he's only 2 days old... But where Greyson and Lukas have Blond hair and Gray/Blue eyes like Mom.... Bryan has Black hair (and lots of it) and Hazel eyes like his Daddy. Mandie is recovering, but still in Hospital for monitoring. 😞 Because of bloody Covid19 - NOBODY is allowed to visit her, except her fiancee!! 😠 I am finally putting my foot down! She's having her tubes tied!! She's almost 30, now has 3 boys AND PKD! This Delivery was a huge risk for her. I'm NOT losing another Daughter! Thankfully, her Kidney function has been improving. We think Lukas somehow figured out that he's now the "middle child" (something I had advised them BOTH about when they were discussing a third Kid, last year).... Anyway, the little Guy who's been dragging his belly all over the place, GOT UP this Morning and WALKED across the room!! 😲❤ Now of course we never really know what goes on in a Baby's Head.... But it really seemed like his thinking was "NEW BABY? I'll teach HIM to steal my thunder - I'm Walking!" Again, HUGE speculation, but he's had NO desire to walk before this morning. He's already a bit moody, like his Dad. I hope he doesn't get hit with "middle child syndrome". It's actually a THING. At least I don't have to worry about Greyson... He IS my Grandson!! 😁 He's bold, brash, centre of attention and a huge flirt!! I'm sure HE don't feel threatened.... He's well liked, without trying!! Geez! Hi Alastair. It's nice to know you enjoy the videos, thank you! You have asked a very tricky question! Trouble is, there is a real problem with availability at the moment, you will be lucky to find much of a choice at all, I'm afraid. If you want to go for the most detailed build and amazing quality materials, the Avante or Egress are the ones to go for - but very expensive! TBH, I think the entry level kits, with a few hop-ups are pretty awesome, like the TT02B 4WD or the DT03 RWD is a blast with a decent brushless motor and a few carbon bits like the shock towers added. If you have a bit of cash saved, it might be fun to hop-up one of these chassis. In the middle are re-releases of older kits, I can recommend the Terra Scorcher and the Super Hot Shot, great cars and very iconic. As I said, it will probably come down to which kit you can actually get your hands on! Best of luck and best regards from Mark... :)

Hi Michael - thanks for the sub mate! I spent most weekends in the 80's drooling over the kits in Beatties, Birmingham. Yeah, I (or my parents) could never afford a Tamiya back then either, I had to wait till 1986 for my first, the Monster Beetle. If you want to start the hobby with a Tamiya, the TT02B is excellent, quite easy to build, good handling and pretty robust, not too expensive, either. Certainly at home on dirt and grass and a dirt/gravel BMX track. However, I wouldn't dare run any of my Tamiyas on a skatepark - I think it's asking too much of the plastic kits as the landings are too hard, breakages would be inevitable I think. Not really had any experience of the Banggood stuff, but some do look to be quite durable, they just don't float my boat! From what you have said, the TT02B is the best Tamiya to start with IMHO. Whatever you choose, I wish you and your son lots of fun! :)

I have a 10.5T for a new build and will put it in the DT03 to see how quick it will go. I needed to get a fan for this as I understand the Tamiya ESC will overheat with the higher RPM motor. Got back into this after a 35 layoff and can't get enough of it. Thanks for the informative videos, keep them coming

That setup sounds just perfect, Ian! Good you got the old hornet going again, yeah, these Tamiya's keep on going with a little TLC! Oh, I have never gone below 13.5 with the TBLE02, very wise to fit the fan, that's exactly what's needed. You and me both, I had a 20 year layoff! Good we got back into it, I think this hobby is keeping me sane in these crazy times! Cheers, mate, keep 'em running! :))

@@MarkBryanRC Just ran the DT03 with the 10.5 brushless and hit 51k's on Tarmac. This car handles great and if I tightened the suspension, put on the stiffer stabilizer (I have the flexier one for off road) and put road tyres I reckon it would be perfect. Had a quick run on dirt and the motor is a bit to much and could only really run at 3/4 throttle. So I think the 17.5T setup is what I will stick with especially for off road.
@MarkBryanRC

@@ianwinpenny1857 Hi Ian - yea the 17.5 sounds just right for dirt running, as you say, the 10.5 is a bit too much off road, but sounds like a hell of a lot of fun on tarmac! 51k is a great speed, and definitely fast enough for this old RC driver!!! :))

Mark - I am looking for a kit to build with my 6/7 yr old - for him to use. Will be on tarmac and grass (local park). Would you suggest the TT02 or the DT-03? SImilar price, will be fairly stock to start with (may get some bearings but thats about it). Am thinking the DT03 as it comes with better motor and looks like it has better ground clearance, but TT02 is 4WD and v well supported...
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC 3 жыл бұрын
Wow - that's a tough question! The DT is an easier build, and a bit faster. They both come with the Torque tuned motor, but RWD has less transmission losses. The TT is easier to drive, especially on the dirt. They are both bomb-proof. I recommend both, but for a child the 4WD is probably easier to learn how to drive. Either way, you can't lose though! Best regards from Mark... :)

Hi - the DT does have a bit more ground clearance, but the stock springs in the back are way too soft and it bottoms out easily. You can improve the TT by using the inner shock mount holes on the lower wishbones.
