The new roof isn't expected to be finished for another 3+ years as well, owing to the immense technical challenges. The Big O's technical Ring around the roof needs be replaced, and the roof's load needs to be pretty evenly balanced between the prestressed reinforced concrete ribs of the stadium and the Stadium Tower. The tower and the Olympic Aquatic Centre at its base is also under repair after a damaging fire earlier this year, one that forced our Olympic Swimming Trials to move to Toronto.

There's one possibility that, while unlikely, you neglected to mention: the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina. The stadium was expressly built to be brought up to MLB-level capacity during one off-season, and to serve as the temporary home of a relocated MLB franchise. With the Carolina Mudcats A-level franchise moving from the territory, Tampa will have an exclusive option to the territory thanks to their operational agreements with their AAA-level affiliate, the Durham Bulls. If for whatever reason they can't find a local solution that passes muster? They'd have the option of playing in Durham, indefinitely.

Hi Brodie, When I googled The Tropicana Roofing cost the name David Geiger that works with Geiger Engineers popped up. This company installed the to what was called the Florida Suncoast Dome in 1990. He told the NY Times the roof's fabric had an intended service life of 25 years. What does that mean? Would the canvas just begin to leak after 25 years or would the fabric begin to bio- degrade after 26 years? Had Hurricane Milton not even passed by St.Pete with it's strong winds it would still be fully intact today. I was there on the last Thursday home game in late September. That fabric roof was still in the best shape since it was installed. Anyway I can picture any insurance claim adjuster denying the roof claim by a 51% margin if they discover that the roof to had a service life of 25 years and did nothing about replacing it. However maybe on the 50% chance that adjuster rules in favor covering the cost maybe they do it because the fabric was so strong it never deteriorated to losing any integrity that it never had leaked or rips in the fabric from any previous thunderstorms. It out performed the projected service life because that science behind wan to conservative on the the fabric. I can picture the Rays suing the City of St.Pete at sometime in the future for the roof replacement since the city bought the roof to begin with and the City was negligent in not doing anything with roof past the 25 year mark since they paid for the construction of it and should have known as far back in 2015 that it should been replaced. However I bet in favor by 10:1 odds that the roof gets paid out by the Ray's escrow maintenance fund. I think if that happens it gets depleted so much that there won't be enough funds left in the next 3 years for any extra high cost in maintenance repairs that might be needed by 2027. I don't know how this is going to play out either but it's going to be an interesting few months as what happens for the Trop and what major entity will for the roof.

There’s no way how MLB and its owners are will fork over any of their own money to fix the situation. City and county have enough to fork over in repairs throughout the area.

When I worked for an insurance company in the '90s and '00s, not only did we not offer home insurance in Florida, we didn't even do business there. Besides the high likelihood of claims, the state's insurance regulations at the time were pretty onerous on carriers, and we decided not to deal with that. (What Florida's insurance regulatory landscape is like now, I don't know.) Side note: Florida has a program called "Citizens", which provides home insurance in case you can't get it from a private carrier, and per law they must accept all applicants. However, because private insurers make it tough to get a home policy in Florida, or don't offer home insurance in the state, Citizens has become the biggest home insurer in the state. For a place that's prone to aggressive weather and is the third most populous state, yikes.

I think it's going to come down to cost not only for the roof but all the other water damage to the interior from the storm rain and rain going forward. With about 4 -5 years of life left the cost to repair might be best spent to move on to constructing the new ballpark. What happens may also come down to city contracts. St. Pete may require them to play longer in the new building to make up for the time they should have been in the Trop. Unless storm damage gets them out any agreement. It might also be a wrinkle in moving on to constructing a new park sooner than expected. If the Rays need to fufill any agreement for years played in St. Petersburg it may see them play at Al Lang downtown. Not only that but the Rays own the venue and it might make more fiscal sence.for them to spend some money to make a few upgrades to Al Lang and not have to profit share with another venue elsewhere. Though capacity is the issue. Then you look at the schedule and all the days needed to play a full season. Not sure they can share a single active minor or major league ballpark. Disneys Wild World of sports checks a lot of boxes but just like Al Lang the capacity is about the same. Oakland would be unpopular with the Tampa Bay region and also are they going to draw 7,500+ every night in that stadium? I doubt it and really think it may be better to look back at Al Lang or Disney at that point. There is the Steinbrenner Field option. However, in the cases where there are schedule conflicts with the Tarpons it seems like it this option would also need to be more of a traveling road show. They may have to play comflicting dates at other local minor league parks in Clearwater, Dunedin and possibly Bradenton. I think it would be a cool traveling show case of the team to the local area and might help build little broader fan base. But MLB may not be keen on the idea. It's going to be interesting to see what happens.

The JMA/Carrier Dome in Syracuse had its air-supported roof replaced with a cable-suspended roof in 2020, and that cost $118 million. That was a completely new roof design, and not just repairs to an existing design, but if Tropicana needs more than new fabric panels the cost could easily exceed $100 million. Labor costs are going to be even greater than 2020 because of inflation and not being able to plan the construction years in advance. Local labor was hard to find before the hurricanes, and now they have to compete with other parts of the state that have more pressing needs. Besides the cost of the roof repairs, the longer the rest of the interior of the stadium is exposed to the elements, the worse off they are going to be. What is the weather like in Tampa between October and April? They may have factored in some flooding when designing the building, but not extended rainfall on every surface.

In my opinion, if the Rays play at the Trop in 2025, it won't be the whole season. There are other options not mentioned. Back in 1986, a chunk of Olympic Stadium's roof came down. That was early September and with just a few weeks of road games left, the Expos played on the road the remainder of their season. If they were to host say the Cubs, they played in Chicago as the home team. The same could be done with the Rays the first part of the season. Another option is to play in Puerto Rico, the same stadium the Expos played in during their last two seasons, a total of 24 games. It seats 18,000. Don't know if some other team uses it so there can be scheduling issues. That's why Oakland and Montreal (if available) are options. I think if the Rays have to play elsewhere in 2025, the union will insist it be in one city. You don't want the players to essentially be on the road all year and have a place to call home for six months. So in my mind, if the Trop cannot be ready for a number of months, decide on where they'll play and stay there. Don't have them play in Oakland for half the year and then come back to Tampa, it's too disruptive, not just players but every Rays employee.

If everything went perfect meaning there is someone out there already set to make the panels today and the current cable support system is not damaged, estimates are at least 5 or 6 months to close the roof.

Given that the actual turnout is more like 5,000 a game because most Rays fans don't live on that side of town, I think they could benefit from moving to Steinbrenner as you mentioned. If they stay put, I'd like to see them convert the Trop into an outdoor stadium for the time being considering they aren't spending too long there anyway. Saves on money and I think everyone wins. If the typical Florida rainstorms truly were an issue for MLB, there wouldn't be minor league baseball teams located in tropical Florida. Not only that but the Florida Marlins played with no roof for years. Weather is not a factor with regards to Tropicana Field being a dome.

It’s not possible to “convert the Trop to an outdoor stadium.” It has no drainage and as Brodie mentioned, there are electrical components and such that need to be indoors.

While the idea of the MLB going to Oakland hat in hand begging to bring a team there for an emergency would be hilarious, there's no way the MLB would move a team from Florida to California just for a season or two at most. If they move to any former MLB stadium, Turner Field or Chocktaw Stadium in Arlington are likely in better condition, even if they would need to be deretrofitted from football back to baseball. My guess would be unless the repairs to get it functional are that costly, the Rays will be back in the Trop for next season.

Honestly I hear your points about the roof, but for who though? Every game I saw of the Rays, Tropicana was empty. Is such an expenditure, or the risk of dipping into escrow worth it for 1000 people in the seats, especially with a new stadium being built. I honestly through the Rays would do what Oakland did or what you mentioned about using another ballpark. I still think that card is on the table honestly. If there's a chance to save some money on this, I think Sternberg will take it.

Video topic is the field at the old San Diego Stadium in Dec. 2010 had multiple feet of water on the field caused by 7-10 inches or more of rain over 4 days. Flooding hit the entire area or so of the outer ring of the parking lot behind what used to be the scoreboard, the south and west sides of the parking lot. Those videos are on KZbin. Yet, Stadium grounds crew got the field ready for the Poinsettia Bowl a day or days later between Navy and San Diego State. My guess is Tropicana can still be used if no damage to the electrical wiring and the lights work. Considering the Florida heat, the field should dry in a short amount of time.

Interesting fact: The Los Angeles Dodgers and the then-California Angels shared Dodger Stadium from 1962 to 1965 while Anaheim Stadium was under construction. So with Dodger Stadium hosting two baseball teams and Shea Stadium hosting four teams during the 1975 season, there is precedent teams sharing the same stadium during the same season.🤔🧐
@Kira_Kovalyova2 ай бұрын
True, but those situations had the schedule made for them with the sharing in mind. Right now, the schedule has been made assuming the Rays have their own venue. If the were to share with the Marlins at Loan Depot Park, what happens when the Marlins and Rays are both scheduled to play at home on the same night?
@jamesparker77292 ай бұрын
@@Kira_Kovalyova Good point! I guess the only way to make that happen would be for MLB to expedite the repair solution and, if the repairs could not be made by the start of next season, the schedules would have to be modified. Lots of travel, lodging and logistics issues.

The Mets, Yanks and Jets played at Shea in 74 with the GIants joining them on '75. The Jets hated playing at Shea snice the Mets had priority to the place and no football could be played there during the baseball season. In '75, the ground crew must have had nightmares trying to keep the field alive with no breaks for it to recover.

I'm old enough to remember when the Dodgers played at the Coliseum while Dodger Stadium was being built. Also, the Rockies played at Mile High Stadium during the construction of Coors Field. Playing baseball in a football stadium is not optimal, but the Rays might consider (temporarily) playing at Raymond James Stadium if repairing The Trop would be impractical.
@wi547252 ай бұрын
Raymond James' field area is much smaller than the Coliseum. The short field there would be around 230 feet, and there is no way MLB would ever approve that. At least at the Coliseum, the left field line dimension was longer than it was at the Polo Grounds. They would have to remove several rows of seats and do considerable remodeling to make it work there, and the Bucs would never agree to that. I'm guessing that if they cannot play at the Trop, they will install temporary left field side and outfield bleachers and play at their facility in Port Charlotte. They could fit in enough bleachers to get up to more than the 16,500 the Rays averaged in 2024. It would be the top pitchers' park in the Majors if they played there.

I wouldn't count out the 2 stadiums.. yeah the schedules are set, but if you used both... how many times are both teams playing at home at the same time.. plus as the Jets/Giants show in NJ.. you can stagger the times a bit... team A @ 1pm and team B at 7pm... They do day/night DH's all the time for rainouts at other parks... Though if only for a week or two, Steinbrenner is probably best... though it does host an A ball team so it's not fully available.. (though fo A ball... there are back lots that can be played on).
