800 grain SUPER Paradox 12 GA. Slugs that WHISTLE

Filmed at the Ernst Stavro Blofeld Rifle Range, we test out Steve's Super Paradox slugs of Russian design. These are the heaviest slugs we have ever shot, weighing in at 800 grains. Steve already tested these through full rifling with excellent results so we wanted to see how they looked out of cylinder bore and rifled choke.

Watching you and OG blowing stuff up is always high on my list of MUST SEE! If a slug enters the rifling just a bit out of square, then in-flight oscillation is almost assured, just something you have to live with. (on large caliber muzzle loaders, the bullet is started straight and so the inflight path is far more stable then a shotgun load.) Keep up the tests, we LOVE it! Sorry to hear OG is using a pad, hope he gets well soon, (Of course when you stop shooting anvils, the stress might drop a bit.)

The projectile is not balanced adequately enough for the velocity and rotation it’s being pushed to. Like a car tire that only starts noticeably shaking around 50mph, when in reality it was shaking/oscillating off center from 1mph, as soon as it started rotating, just doesn’t become an issue until the rotation increases to a level that can cause undesirable results like a complete tire failure or, in the case of high speed/high RPM projectiles losing predictability and accuracy.

I can only see 2 possibilities for the wobble. 1. Is wad release. Change the air Cushing vortex. 2. Wad pitching under or around projectile which instant deformities occur. Then again that's my opinion. And you should do some police work and investigate the wads to see what the case maybe then judgements would be just and true instead of I don't knows. "Ignorance is no exception to the law"!! Great job!!

See if using a ported barrel makes a difference. The instability could be from the gasses exiting the barrel behind the slug.

@Rhinestone Hurricane you think that tail could have been compressed/deformed from the force driving it forward enough so when it met the choke it didn't properly engage? Like the choke has a tighter diameter than the tube, I've read that it's not great to use sabot slugs in a rifled choke (there wasn't any explanation why for all i know it could be complete bull) so maybe this has the same effect.

@@lazybullitz3821 I scratch my first hypothesis, I think these slugs are just pushing the limits of the firearm. They're almost 400 grains heavier than a standard slug still traveling super sonic out of a firearm designed for lower breach pressures and lower velocities compared to a rifle. They're sort of like the 700 grain rounds for the 500 magnum yeah they're cool but completely impractical, a testament of " it's never the question of why but why not"

I would guess the gas seal or "cape" may be occasionally chipping or breaking from the force of accelerating such a heavy slug. Seems to be the weakest link and most possible/probable explanation my brain can come up with. Tho if this were the case you would think the pitch of the whistle would change at the very least..

From a guy that dabbles with too much science.... As long as the wobble precession is stable, the mass will pretty much stay in a predictable, but not necessarily straight, line. Windage, drop, coriolis, blah, did-ee blah. So, when the thing is perfectly stable on its axis, no spiral path, but it seems to be acceptable even if it has an eccentric wobble. This may be a manufacturing defect, where there is something to do with the injection or molding process that put a dense spot in the projectile, and that in turn throws off the balance to an apparent wobble. It might not be the propellant's fault, nor the rifling or lack therof. Need some more testing to be sure of the cause, but you guys wouldn't have thay kind of equipment. Now, I couldn't make out the whistle, so, maybe a few rounds shot blind into the air?

IIRC in a newer episode where the shooter was a marine, you pushed a 68.3 gram slug @1100 fps. I'm pretty sure that these 50 gram rounds could be pushed to 400 metres per secondwithout increasing the recoil, and at that speed, they could turn out to be the deadliest slugs you've tested to date (from a fully rifled barrel).

I think the wobble was caused by the Cornelius effect. You need to shot in the other direction so the slugs are less effected by sun spot waves. 😁

Jeff, Danny, and Greg. Steve (I believe is the front runner) in development when it comes to the Sarvog Molds. 750 grs of a projectile is pretty impressive @1100 fps. By way of comparison, the Bernanke slugs do not hold a candle to the kinetic energy striking power. The wobbling effect (In my opinion) is because of a deformed skirt at the release at the muzzle, I do not think you can do anything about that other than reduce pressure using a lighter load of propellant. Is it possible that the oscillation was caused due to the velocity being very close to the trans-sonic such that some flew far enough above the speed of sound to be stable whereas others were slower and ran afoul of the trans-sonic zone.

I'm also thinking that being in the trans-sonic range is likely part of the problem. Aerodynamics in that speed range tend to be very quirky. Where the transition between sub and supersonic is on the projectile could make a huge difference.

Good work,, And Thanks For Sharing Your Videos. IN my target shooting days, I found that wobble came from the center of mass not being concentric with the center of form. And that caused the slug to keyhole going into the target at 100 yards. I found that only happened with Sierra points,, with Hornady points, I never had that problem.
