One of the questions on my physics midterm last semester was about a bullet hitting a lead block. The gotcha was that if you calculated just momentum transfer from bullet to block+bullet you’d be short some energy. To balance the equation you have to calculate the temperature change too! Some of the energy is lost to heat!

That tumbling effect is very interesting, it may be worth studying for enhanced effects on big game hunting with 12ga. It would be interesting to see if making the slug unbalanced at both ends (opposite) will make it tumble in a more controllable way.

Quick idea to ID the round that you find on the ground like the last one of the video: do different markings on the round (straight line, triangle, cross...) and do a corresponding marking on the brass of the shell when loading the round. Like this you'd be able to be sure at which shot the round correspond to. All the best

Jeff! I have a suggestion for Alexi… What if you were to make an offset hollow base, or drill holes out from the rear on only one side? That way the slug would be aerodynamically symmetrical, but offset in balance. It might be another neat experiment.

Hypothesis; that bubble under the ballistic gel might be air getting trapped between the wound tract and the round itself passing through the gel. My guess is because the shot was so low, it forced all that air pressure down into a temporary air pocket. You can actually see as the bubble deflates, it pushes air out of the exit cavity. Again, I could be totally wrong.

H&K actually tried something like that back in the day. A 4,7 mm rifle round with the bullet tip scalloped out, although not to that extent, to cause yawing in the target. Löffelspitz they called it. Really interesting stuff.

The British figured out over 100 years ago that a light tip, wood in that case, caused the same thing. All of the surplus 7.62x39 that I have had, the slugs squish in the middle almost like they are hollow and would produce the same effect.

@@garmancathotmailcom that's sorta what HPBT match is but the "hollow point", hole or meplat is more for aerodynamics than terminal expansion. I'm no expert but I'd assume that meplats creat some kinda air cushion that reduces drag.

Yeah i remember something back in about 99 about a hk pdw "personal defense weapon" basically a very small smg and it used at least their marketing scheme was called an asymmetric soon nose round. The idea was that it would be reasonably accurate and flat flying up to x meters, and would then begin to tumble at a significant rate. The supposed purpose of this tumbling was to "shred" through the then widely available body armor. IIRC, it was a fairly punchy intermediate round probably similar to a 5.7 today. I dont reallt remember how well it did. But the article i read was pretty excited about it.

They're impressive. Look up Punch bullets for the pistols. I handled a 45-70 slug that was recovered after a trip through 4 ft of elephant skull and it looked almost new. Someone did brass .22's at some point, some boutique high velocity round.

I actually think this is a good idea. Well, for short, *almost* mid range and especially in a rifled barrel. Tumbling can induce a whole different crazy kind of damage to a target. Plus, who knows what that weird shape could do to its target on entry

Good to see a video from you. Seems like it's been awhile. I always enjoy the quick wit from both of you. I think that would be a heck of a slug if it was all there. Are either of you aware of Fort Scott Munitions, Or Velocity Tactics ammo? It is available in solid copper or in brass and is very pointy but designed to tumble on contact and it really works. It is manufactured only twenty miles from where I live. Before the great ammo depression of 2020-2021 it was widely available. I love their .223 brass projectiles both loaded and for reloaders. Very accurate too.

They already exist in smaller calibers. I've seen hollow points with 6-8 points and designed to fragment into long sharp shards. I don't remember the manufacturer or name.

With regular rifle bullets, I suppose the wounding effect could be more gnarly when it tumbles and keyholes, but on a 12 gauge slug, the difference between it hitting with the tip first and it keyholing, isn't that big.

Those are some crazy rounds!! Had a thought this morning. What about melting down some hotwheels/matchbox cars? The metal used in the body is an zinc/aluminium alloy called Zamac and has a comparatively low melting temperature. Has also been used in other things. I know it has been used for things like window winder mechanisms in car doors for example. Potentially you could melt down the bodies and cast them. Just a thought.
