How well will an OCTAGON-SHAPED Bullet work?

Today we test out an unusual copper slug from Tim Hamilton, the Ballistic Machinist. The diabolo shape is a proven shape for a self-stabilized projectile, but Tim thought it would be interesting to see how it would work if it looked like a three dimensional object rendered in an 80's video game.

Just the other day Jeff told me it wasn’t looking good for Danny’s return. That hit hard. Then I realized what a blessing for the man to have had a chance to become world famous on this channel. That’s something very few “average joes” ever get to experience. He left us knowing he was loved and admired by hundreds of thousands of people all over the planet. I've always enjoyed the mathematical style slugs since seeing the cube slug fly with surprising accuracy.... Damn, that's 5 years ago!! Let's have a load of multi-faceted slugs to enjoy! Having watched the vid I've be inclined to keep most of the faceted edges and not machine the edges that grip the rifling better - just keep them round.

A soft vest can stop a slug, but the body can't stop a soft vest from penetrating. Doesn't much matter the shape, getting 1.5 oz to the chest at high speed is going to end you. An unsuspecting individual found out that soft armor doesn't stop subsonic blackout, even with cast bullets.

The answer is extremely well if it's shot out of a corresponding octagonal barrel with a twist or if you can make a corresponding sabot that will transfer the twist from a rifled barrel

One of those small firework sparklers or a strip of magnesium would keep lit through the impact. Works with many flammable liquids, try slugging a water jug full of premium gasoline. This is also how the MOAB ordinance works (roughly). Cheers

@@taofledermaus I haven't quite figured out the secret of body armor. I've tried DIY stuff, even using Kevlar (the sort designed for laying up in boat making, not the ballistic kind). I've not been terribly successful. Now you can source real armor for less than the cost of getting the raw materials. I have no idea how that works. Fundamentally, the energy of the projectile is spread out over space and time (when the armor works). Aramid fibers have a lot of tensile strength. In armor, they are woven so they can flex but are held together. The stuff Ms Foxlin used is woven differently. It needs epoxy to hold it together. While it is strong, the result is the energy of the projectile is transferred in much less time, raising the stress well above the PSI/MPa rating of the fibers. One thing I find particularly annoying is the DuPont Kevlar is available in two types. Kevlar 29 is used in ballistic armor. Kevlar 49 is what is used for laying up with epoxy. The yarns have different properties.

I think the base/rear of the slug is too heavy, The rifling gave it spin so got more stable. I don't belive the octagonal shape made much impact on preformance, other than looks :)
