SKYNET Anti-Drone Shells - Do they live up to the hype?

I hoped to get some sample rounds of these Skynet shells from the manufacturer. It's a pretty cheap way to get millions of eyeballs looking at your product. But... they ignored me. I have no shortage of stuff I need to shoot, so it wasn't the end of the world to not shoot these. But, a person named Jon contacted me and offered to buy these for us to test. These are a pretty complex round, and it seemed a lot could easily go wrong with them. Each shell is almost $7, and even more when you add shipping. These are designed to damage quadcopters either by impact or by fouling the props with the string.
Why didn't we shoot a flying drone? It's illegal to shoot a flying drone. With all the grief Joerg Sprave got from the media recently, we didn't want to post a video of two cops committing a crime.
We got 6 shells, we shot them all and show you the results, good or bad. Remember, this is not a sponsored video so there was no incentive to try to appease the company and only show cherry-picked shots.

I have been flying drones for years now. everything from $30 toys, $1000 photography drones, and custom built race drones. propellers are so fragile on these drones. the slightest imbalance in a propeller with cause vibrations that can throw off all the onboard censors. so even though these skynet rounds are slow and do little damage. a string cought in one of the motors can slow the propeller enough to crash the drone. the purpose of these round wouldn't be to destroy the drone, just disable it. the range of these rounds is way to short to really be practical but I believe these to be very effective at doing their intended purpose.
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 7 жыл бұрын
It seems highly unlikely a quadcopter is going to get close enough (25 yards) to you that you'd hit them with these Skynet rounds. Even if the drone is hovering 30 or 40 yards away you'd have to take many shots before you got lucky and hit it.

It’s unacceptable to spy on someone. Funny things though, you are entitled to privacy but you don’t own the airspace above your land. You are not legally allowed to shoot a drone down, you will be paying should it go to court. Between $30 to thousands of dollars. But in short just fly respectfully.

"Arial trespassing". Seems quite suspect to me. Even if they meant "aerial trespassing", you're not allowed to shoot stuff that crosses your property line (e.g. passenger aircraft). If the drone is weaponized, then yes, it's self defense, but if you're just annoyed at the noise, you *will* get sued by the owner.

Crossing your property in the air is one thing. Most people won't object to that, and if you are talking about an airplane, it's a moot point anyway. What people are objecting to, and rightfully so, are the "spy" drones. Flying over someone's property slowly and with camera running. The first case I was aware of was a father who shot down a drone with a shotgun. The drone was spying on his daughter who was sunbathing in the backyard. Full privacy fencing, etc. No question but that it was an attempt to get illicit pictures. The owners complained to the police that someone shot their drone. The father met the police in his driveway and told them the drone was trespassing. Long story short, the drone owners got in trouble, but they were trying to spin things the other way.

True, but we can't afford to damage a real, quality drone, can't fly one that close to a naval airbase, and it's almost impossible to frame and focus a high speed camera on a moving object. I do actually see this round as successful if you would like to be able to recover the drone you have shot down. The successful deployment of the strings means it will probably snag the drone, mid air, and not completely destroy it. If someone is invading your privacy or potentially deploying unmanned weapons against you, wouldn't you like to try and find out who did it? It's definitely catching something, and you can see they get stuck in trees. You don't have to destroy something to stop it.

As a guy who has taken the time and trouble to get a commercial FAA license to pilot small unmanned aircraft systems, I'm glad to hear you explain that it is illegal to shoot them down. If anybody gets caught shooting at our fire department's aircraft while we're flying a mission, they will face SIGNIFICANT criminal charges, and probably face a devastating civil suit which would no doubt be filed by the family of whoever we're trying to rescue. I recently watched a video promoting these rounds for security guards etc. Showed them bringing down multiple real flying drones with ease at various ranges up to 100 yards. I had my doubts then if it was some kind of "movie magic". I feel confident saying it was now. I think bird shot would be more effective, cheaper and less finicky.

I think that the point of this shoot is working differently from what you tested them... Might be, that you need to make contact with drone only with those strings to snare and not damage it at longer ranges where that shot travels slower - like throwing a net over it. Maybe the short range was countering the effect. But it was fun to watch as always TAO crew 😎

Good to see the gun side of things represented. After seeing these demos, a good goose load - #4 or #2 seems good. Honestly with the drone your not going for real devastating damage. If you can get one prop to stop spinning or slow down enough, it'll fall out of the sky. That's where i see the whole string thing coming in play. If it were me though, I'd stick to bird shot. If I can hit a flying duck I can probably hit a drone hovering over me.

I feel like it's supposed to disable the drone so that it can be recovered. Say that they are spying with it & it is a security issue, you want to recover that drone & find what data you can salvage from it. Blowing it into smithereens will destroy the unit completely. Recovering it intact might provide useful information such as finger prints & possibly video they were attempting to gather. I'm assuming drones have onboard storage that could be accessible by law enforcement or whatever security force seeking to take it down. I expected the cords to be much stronger & able to function as a 5-headed bola.

The brushless motors used in most r/c vehicles today are rated in KV, that's rpm per volt. Popular quads ("drones") of the day run 800-1250 KV motors, and 3s-4s lithium batteries. That puts rpm range anywhere from 8800 to 18500 rpm at full throttle. Not allot of material out there is gonna stand up to a carbon prop at 10000 rpm.

I think they concluded the skynet would not bring the drone down safely without harming it, with the product also being so expensive, it's better to use a normal shell to do the same job.

My main problem with people that are against drones flying over them is that if you live in town, you can’t tell if a drone is recording you unless it’s flying slowly and at a low altitude, and if you live in town, and you shot at a drone, you would also be discharging a firearm in the city limits, and firing it in the air at that. If people are worried about someone using it to break into your house later, why don’t you load the shotgun with some cheaper rounds and put it beside the bed. Drones also fly in navigable airspace, which is regulated by the FAA, so depending on what state you live in also determines wether the drone would even count as trespassing or not. The safest thing to do would be to either call the cops and see if they could ask the person to stop flying the drone over your property, or even try asking the person themselves if you know where the person is that is flying the drone.

Even if were legal to shoot down a drone- legally, you can fly a drone up to 400 feet in the US without special permits and such, you would be hard pressed to even see a drone that's 400 feet above you sitting still, let alone hit it with anything. It would be next to impossible if it were moving. A challenge only 22plinkster can live up to.

Nets and net rounds are _designed not_ to harm or damage the target more than absolutely necessary to get the net to where it needs to go. While your experience here is quite lacking, that is very understandable. When cords and nets hit spinning propellers, the propellers do the rest of the job, wrapping it up and in, seizing the rotation, and ultimately causing the drone to come crashing down. No (spinning) propellers, the net is _very_ unlikely to stay on a hit target. Kinda like a long rope dragged across and through a boat propeller: if the propeller isn't turning, no problem. If it is though, all hell breaks loose.

The reality is is that you do not need to damage the housing of the drone to take it down. You only need to stop any one of the propellers so if it has twine on it it will wrap around the motor and it will fall immediately from the sky

I think the shell is supposed to tangle the drone’s propellors rather than blast it apart? Maybe if the ‘strings’ were made of wire instead…

I think that if the props were spinning, the string would likely get caught in the propellers.
