This is great advice with scientific backing too. It is related to "breaking the freeze". When every you feel a panic attack or just panic, if you "break the freeze" you can get past the panic and start to feel so much better, and even knowing that you have an action you can do to break the attack makes them happen less often to never again for a lot of people. It is all related to way back when we were around surviving by avoiding huge predators like lions, if we saw one near by our instinct was to freeze until the danger left and we could then run away. So now there are no literal lions to freeze for, and no actual way to finally run away from so many things that can cause us panic. So if you feel the freeze, break it by jumping jacks or jogging in place or any kind of contracting your large muscles like you are running, then your brain will think you escaped the predator and can calm down.

In choir and voice lessons we were taught something kind of similar but different. When you get nervous on stage, reach for the hem of your pants, or the sides of your skirt. It gives you a place to put nervous energy that doesn't affect the performance. It does also have that effect of bringing your thoughts out of the air back into your head to focus on yourself instead of the audience.

Hey man! Don't know how often you come back to read these - but I think part of what you are describing is this really cool thing called mindfulness. You should look it up - it can help with both long-term and short-term stress, as well as just being a nice way to appreciate where you are at that second. Anywho, thanks for the ERB content! I also miss your older content on your first channel (I've been a fan for a long time) but I get how life can be. Much love!

Peter, you might not even read this due to how busy you are but on the off chance you do see this.... Thank-you! You're inspiration helped me survive through high school. Every week I would watch your monday show and if it wasn't monday I would watch the same one over and over just to remind myself that there are good people in the world. Now that I am a senior in college I can almost honestly say if it wasn't for your youtube videos, something so small, I might not be alive right now. I am glad you are well and I hope you get all the energy this universe can muster, becasue you deserve it! Thank-you again.

My therapist gave me a similar coping technique. Close your eyes, roll them the the back of your head and think, "cancel cancel". It kinda short circuits your brain so you can take a breath, clear your thoughts for a second, and interrupt the despair spiral. It's important to keep a clear head when you need to fight for what's important to you and those you love.

I am loving all of these vlogs! Thank you so much for the tip. Changing your prospective is key to helping yourself. Going to therapy is awesome. I have only gotten to go a couple of times and would go back for sure if I was ever at the point I was in my life. Even going now would be good. Being introspective and finding out more about you and how you tick is a good thing. Improving yourself is always a good thing.

I hope this doesn't come off as judgmental or derogatory because it comes from a place of care and understanding due to the conditions in which we are living, but literally before watching this video I was thinking "I wonder if Peter has considered seeing a therapist" and then when I opened the video the words out of your mouth were "so the very first time I went to see a therapist.." I honestly replayed the beginning immediately to make sure I heard right. lol. I don't know where your heart and your head are right now, Peter, but I hope you're doing okay. And I hope the leg tapping continues to work. And if it isn't enough I hope you do find what you need to keep on keepin on.

Another is to use hold your thumb. I think what all of these do is to cause a break in the train of anxiety and place you back into where you are. It's like when those with PTSD have an episode, you offer them a glass of water or distract to bring them back.

"That's a start, This is where I'm standing, This is where I'm sitting, I'm not getting rained on." - could be a short poem. Its hard not to freak out sometimes, I always check in with my self, am i thirsty, when did I last eat, am I tired? if I need to do any of those things I do them before trying to solve any problems. Have you listened to Mary and Dantes podcast about the result? Mary said something along the lines of 'I hope Campaign Trump is not the same as acting president trump ', I am clinging to that. and photos of dogs dressed as bees. I find them soothing.
