Do you follow the inner voice that tells you to get off the bed and onto your yoga mat? If your answer is "yes," you are doing tapas. Luke describes tapas as actions that push us in the direction of positive change, including actions that perfect the body and senses. Tapas is part of the second limb of yoga-the niyamas (observances). It is literally "heat." If we heed the inner voice that urges us forward, our tapas will transform us, just as fire transforms whatever goes into it.

Tapah is a powerful tool to use when required. Tapah is the ultimate self-discipline and the favorite of Patanjali's tools. Tapah is all about willpower and sustained intensity. During the Tapah Sadhana, you should really go for it, to your limits and preferably somewhat beyond, but after completing your Sadhana, you should use it sparingly, only when other tools do not work. it is your backup plan. you know that it is there and you can use it if necessary, but don't overdo it, otherwise, your ego, your sense of "I" can do this will be strengthened. Tapah feeds on friction, on conflict, that is what creates the heat. when you need to overcome, Tapah is your friend. When you need to relax and let go, Tapah will not help. Tapah is empowering you, which is a good thing but to be focused on power is not necessarily a good thing. Power has a tendency to corrupt. so, my advice is: first craft it to a maximum of your individual potential and then store it in your spiritual cellar and use it only when absolutely needed. knowing that you have this option, knowing that you can use the power of your will anytime, makes it that much easier to surrender and let go.
