Tapping Out for 2024

Hey folks, today we're getting taps out for this season. This year I'm scaling up a bit from the 8 taps I did last year, and so I'll be putting in 50 Maples, and 50 Black Walnuts.

Landis Legacy Farm LLC is a pasture raised meats and eggs operation, located on a 200 acre farm, 10 minutes from Blacksburg, VA. In addition to that, there's a pre-Civil War log house that's being remodeled on farm, a century-old covered bridge, as well as many structures to be built with lumber from our on farm sawmill.

Fortunately a lot of the lateral lines can stay out year round. So less work for next year!

Oh yeah! That’s definitely been something I’ve thought about. So far hasn’t been a problem. It seems from what I’ve heard that people have more issues with squirrels chewing holes in the lines.

I am gearing up too Not as many trees here though! I own 28 acres back home where I was raised with more trees their down the road I plan to go back to do syrup their! that will be down the road in like two or three years. I will only be going with buckets. Great job though Josh what are you planning to do with all your syrup?

Awesome! The lines have been totally worth the effort. It’s been much easier than individual buckets. Hopefully I should be selling most of it.

Hopefully all your 'ways you are not supposed to do its' work out. I can't see that little air vacuum being a problem given old buckets with questionable (if any) covers that used to be used long ago.

So far so good. I’m thinking the difference is there’s a lot more air contact with this. 🤷‍♂️

I wonder if having a less friction-fit hole into the barrels may allow for air/pressure escape throughout the system. Just a thought

You cannot pump from a vacuum the pump must have air from some where or the lines will collapse

So I think the idea is that you create a vacuum and that pulls the sap from the tree. That causes the sap to move towards the pump. 🤷‍♂️
