When I was growing up, I so wanted to have vibrato, so very badly because I couldn't do it at all. I think I used a similar method to your shaking, which was to manually vibrate the front of my throat, to get my brain to accept the sound and to try to imprint how to do it. Eventually I didn't need to use my hand to get that sound. So I thought I got it, but actually I was using my throat too much with a lot of tension. I then really practised and managed to get the vibrato originating further down and to a pleasing degree...the problem then happened that I almost forgot how to straight-tone like you mentioned at the end. *Everything* I sang had vibrato because that's all I was training myself for for such a long time. I had to get myself out of that bad habit and I did it by listening to singers who use next to no vibrato (Björk would be one excellent example) and deliberately emulating their vocalisations. I have plenty still to work on with my voice but I'm now in a good place with regards to vibrato; I can turn it on or off as needed. I still have a slight tendency to over-extend final syllables of words when I use vibrato but that's something I can work on more easily, I think. It all comes down to listening to yourself, self-analysing and being very honest with yourself about where you are right now and what's needed to get to where you want to be.

A good technique is to listen to opera, classical, or Broadway where vibrato is used. If you have a musical ear, your mind can pick up the vibrato eventually when singing along! This also helps with tonal quality as well if you are interested in any of those genres. Though listening and learning HEALTHY vocal techniques are different, learning tonal quality and vibrato by ear can really help :)

The analogy about riding a bike is brilliant, as is the physical shaking to feel that relaxation, then begin to be able to do it without the physical movement. This is probably the best vibrato lesson on youtube I've seen, because you can appreciate how it happens straight away and then you can work on making it happen in your own way once you grasp that concept. There is so much WRONG with this. I'm a voice professor and what you said about the voice having a "natural undulation" in the throat, release in the shoulders, and freedom is true but every other aspect of what you all did to "create vibrato" completely flies in the face of safe, proper, and effective vocal art instruction. Vibrato is prevalent and available in ALL singers and is a biproduct of correct subglottic pressure (air support) alongside release of tension in the larynx/surrounding muscles - simply put vibrato happens naturally once you've worked out some muscular "kinks" in your voice technique. One top of which singing with good, natural vibrato IS good voice technique; just listen to Whitney Houston for about 3 seconds and you can see how freely her voice vibrates. She isn't MAKING it vibrate, her years of work, breath support, breath flow, proper registration, etc. is WHY it vibrates. There is many a grave yard of young talented students who developed long standing vocal issues because of their insistence on forcing vibrato which down the road turns into vocal tremolo, wobble, and a host of other issues. You want to teach vibrato, teach appoggio (leaning into the intercostal, thoracic muscles), breath flow alongside with good vocal tone - it'll come in time.

I know how to do vibrato but I forgot how did it came out or how did I learned it. I remember when I was 5 , I used to listen to Whitney songs and I just sing along everytime I listen to her, I think that is why I can do Vibrato so nice. I also listen to Beyonce, and some of our local singers here in the Philippines. Also that time, I don't know how to do Headvoice and Headtone and mixed voice. I just know how to do Chests Voice and Full voice. Growing up I learned more techniques just by listening to different type of songs LITERALLY EVERYDAY. Since then I didn't stop singing. And that is why as a male singer, I can hit high notes with thick voice unlike other guy who can hit high notes but their voice is kinda sonic. But I can't do wistle.
