I hate the "i was a child" argument. I was a child too and and bullying towards black women affected my self-esteem. Some of the boys at school would insult the black girls and praise the non-black girls. And when I heard rap, I would hear lines insulting black women (specifically darkskinned) and praising everyone else. These things have an impact on young black girls and need to be addressed way more.
@eyuh777772 жыл бұрын
Yup! I grew up hating my dark skin and would actively stay out of the sun to lighten up. I started hating my skin complexion, started spewing some of the same harmful rhetoric and was jealous of the light skin girls because, even if they weren't pretty they still got chosen over the pretty dark skin girl. As I got older I actually lightened up a lot, im light brown skin but, I will never forget how I and other girls were treated when I was darker. I fight colorism every chance I get and support dark skin women with my entire heart. I see how differently I am treated compared to dark skin women now that I'm lighter. Chile imagine disparaging dark skinned black women when you don’t even DATE WOMEN to be worried about how they present themselves. Dark skinned women really were beat down from every corner. No other group of women has the experience y’all have had. I’m sorry 🥺😔

I hadn’t heard anything from Tarek since this controversy no shade. Truthspeaker02 had been clearing these colorists on twitter like the legend they are. The first thing I thought when you said that was “She’s a pretty girl for a darkskin” btw
@dajiyahmcae18802 жыл бұрын
This too. But I definitely always heard “pretty boy” be used for light skin men, whether they had some sweetness to them or not.

He made these tweets at 15 & 16. If you look in his description on youtube, he said he started advocating for human rights at the age of 16 for the LGBTQ community. So, he was advocating and support their rights while setting Black people back...
@ItsMsAliciaNicole Жыл бұрын
Hmmm I’m not sure what you mean by “their” rights. Black ppl should be invested in both lgbtq and black rights since intersectionality proves you can be both 🥸

He says “I was a child”. I’m 20 and even in middle school I never believed in the darkskin stereotypes. I witnessed them and thought that way of thinking was so dumb. He didn’t even apologize. He had no remorse he only cared about the outcome of ppl calling him out. He was so insecure about himself but didn’t care that he was adding towards the insecurities of black little girls.

A big part of growth and healing is acknowledging the pain you have caused others even when you were not where you are now in terms of self development. It does not matter whether you have had internalized issues that you weren’t aware of, the point is that you still projected your pain onto somebody else; which in turn causes somebody else having to heal from things you have yet to heal from. There are layers to healing and it’s never ending. Take accountability.

Tarek Ali’s content has been getting recommended to me for a while and it stopped (thankfully). Long story short, something told me that he had an anti-blackness problem back then. Now, he’s in his victim era. He does not want to apologize for what he said again because more people, especially dark skin Black women are calling him out. Thank you for calling him out, Justin💯
@ronny_ron21682 жыл бұрын
His response was very dismissive, and I don’t respect that. It feels like he downplay the harm that his comments cause. I get that he apologized about it before but clearly as you gain new followers and they are then made aware of your past problematic comments you may have to address it again, it comes with being an “influencer”. I watched videos of his in the past and I didn’t always care for his vibe. So I’m not shocked but it’s still disappointing

why make the excuse that he was a child? we understand that as teens we don’t understand the severity of certain things we say or do but why not just say “I was young, i didn’t understand that what i was doing was wrong and that it was bad behavior” and then take accountability for what you did, explain why what you did was wrong and how you grew to practice better behavior. i’m tired of these “apologies” that don’t address what the person did wrong and to then promote yourself is outrageous 😭

These folks are just plain stupid and hateful. If you are a lighter skinned blk person who talks down on someone darker than you, then how do you feel or how would you feel about a whyte person discriminating against you because you are darker than them?
@dajawnchriscross Жыл бұрын
I personally thought of “pretty” as a brown skin black woman/light skin man. As someone who may be considered a light-skin woman, I continually have to check my bias be they taught or not. I feel most black ppl have colorist tendencies. It’s harmful and we should all be held accountable not just to “shame” but to unlearn those harmful tendencies to understand how to improve our feelings essentially towards ourselves and others. These things matter and sorry if you have to continue to apologize, the internet never forgets and certain actions follow you.

I grew up in Fayetteville & there's a lot of gay boys out here yesss lol (a lot of people are accepting here) but when I hear the term "pretty boy" I generally think of a lightskin gay boy, & to think about it I never heard anybody classify any of my brownskin/darkskin friends that are also gay (including myself I'm a darkskin gay) get called the term "pretty" we would get called "cute" or "handsome" but when once my lightskin friends come around here goes call my female friends or my other gay friends "OHH HE FINE HE A PRETTY BOY THIS AND THAT"

I told my mom last night I hated myself for a long time. The comments of coming in from outside that “you got dark”. I remember seeing cream at the beauty store to brighten your skin and buying it before vacation. I was always cute for a dark skin chick or beautiful for a black women. My mother has lighter skin, and last night she said she wish she could take a day off from being seen as just a black woman. I empathize with her and her history with white men but for the first time I told her that I revel in my blackness now. I want you to see it when I walk through the room. I want you to see how smart how poised how strong I am and I respect my culture and my history. this topic will forever be a thing but I’m glad we are coming together now to speak and heal about it!

That response from Tarek was giving very much "these black nappy-headed b***s is jealous of me cuz I'm 'pretty' and got good hair." Like that's the vibe that response was giving. And you'd think someone like Tarek, whose entire brand has centered around his tactful use of words, would know better. But even in this he fell short.

Thank you for shedding light on this. I can't believe it. I just had to unsubscribe after watching this only to see he posted a new video about it with a thumbnail saying he's cancelled 🙄🙄 Hearing the same voice who gave such great advice on mental health not even attempt to give an apology but instead cried cancel culture was very disappointing. I'm glad you discussed being accountable for your actions even when you've "already apologized" or other people have done it as well. It's crazy he's claiming to be cancelled when his pockets aren't effected. Cancel culture doesn't exist.

I really liked him. He was always striving to improve and be better. It hurts learning about this. I'm a dark skin black woman and was a fan. You're right. I would have easily let it go! Had he claimed his past and confirmed it was unacceptable to be colorist. Apologize as many times as it takes... If the dirt resurfaces. It old news to you, but as you grow more people learn what you did they want to know you're sorry...sincerely, and is that too much? When it's racism everyone understands it's this disgusting unacceptable thing but get obtuse about colorism? It's bullcrap.
