Worf is leading a class in a Klingon martial art called Mok'bara. It is really just tai chi done with more aggressive motions and clawed hands. Visual effects producer Dan Curry was a practitioner of tai chi and thought it would be fun to bring it into Klingon culture and show Worf training the crew. So yeah, Worf as security chief has taken it upon himself to teach his fellow officers some unarmed self-defense techniques. Pretty cool idea! It's also probably a pretty good exercise for recreational purposes on long journeys between star systems.
@Vulcanerd2 күн бұрын
Yeah, I really liked that touch. I can see, on a ship of a thousand people, you would have people that are pretty adept and advanced in their hobbies or practices and you'd form clubs and groups just for that thing. I imagine that same space being reserved for other physical activities, piano classes being led by a crew member or like a hiking club making use of the holodeck once or twice a month with members going to exotic locations that aren't even on Earth.

The reason the image was changed (according to Starfleet lore) was that a class M planet (habitable by humans) would have required another look, but a gas giant is so common they could continue on to the next item on the duty list
@busimagen2 күн бұрын
Yes. This. A habitable planet would just encourage them to investigate it more, and then send more people from Starfleet to investigate, and thousands of people from throughout the Federation to want to come and settle or exploit, etc. etc.

Did you know that you can tell roughly where you are in the TNG series by the stardate? Always starts with a 4. The second digit tells you the season, the third digit between 0 and 9 tells you where in the season. This episode has a stardate that starts 445... 4, 4(season) 5 - halfway through season 4 🙂 Therefore the last moment of series 4 would be 449999!

The reasoning with the probes was: an M-Class planet that can support life is worthy of investigation. So he wanted to switch it out for something that wasn't worth the Enterprise going back for, and said that the earlier image was an error, a false image from the wormhole. It's based on tai chi, and the forms you see would be recognizable to anyone at even a beginner level of tai chi, but it's done in a more aggressive way with clawed hands to make it into the Klingon martial art Mok'bara. Worf is teaching the class, either as a way of sharing his cultural heritage with his friends for recreational exercise, or I always liked to think it was because as security chief he figured it would be good for officers onboard to know some unarmed martial arts besides the usual silly-looking stage fighting techniques Starfleet usually uses.

This is one of those episodes where Data demonstrates his absolute devotion to friends and crew. He's willing to be dissected to protect them. While Data didn't tell anyone, he still let them go back where there was a good chance they would destroy the ship, he didn't know that they would be willing to give them another chance. The problem with Josh's rewrite of having more attempts is the more attempts the longer period of time there is and the more clues you're going to leave behind. One thing I like about the episode is that everyone in Starfleet, especially on the Enterprise, especially the bridge crew are extremely bright. They're all scientist and engineers, maybe not to each other's levels, but if something is wrong, they're most likely going to figure it out. If you leave clues in their field of expertise, you're screwed.
@stuffyouotterlistento14612 күн бұрын
Them having done something a bunch of times is an interesting idea, but the main drawback I can see with it is that you lose the whole "humans love a mystery" thing, because it'd be like: "Yeah, you've already told us that 37 times". The way that the episode goes makes for a more meaningful interaction and a diagnosis of the problem, rather than just "Okay, let's try this again, for the 43rd time".

There is a couple episodes in Star Trek history (all shows) that I thought if someone was keeping a written diary (physical book) it would have broken the episode, leading the crew to knowing what happened early. What makes the show great is that they have someone in charge of episode lore to let them know if something in the past would break an episode. Edit: some of it is like "we have Whoopi for the next 7 days, we need to film this Guinan episode, and these three scenes for other episodes" and basically all her scenes for four episodes are filmed now because she will not be available for the next 3 weeks.

I like that Worf is seen in the background nursing his broken wrist immediately after they wake up, long before it's mentioned. And when Troi almost collapses on the bridge, he reaches out to grab her with his left arm even though you'd think his right arm would be more natural. But he doesn't use it, because his wrist is broken, even though that hasn't been highlighted in the episode yet. It's a really nice bit of attention to detail.

17:50 -- "Yesterday's Enterprise" is similar, as the only person who has memories of it as an event is Guinan (and even then, her memories are likely dreamlike, not concrete, more so a sense of intuition than specific memories). 34:15 -- relative to Guinan's presence, it's a 2 level thing: 1) it breaks the pattern of "if Guinan's here, she must have a prominent connection/be important to The Plot(tm)", letting her instead simply be having "x" casual experience/presence in the narrative the way some others did in showing day-to-day life on the ship; and 2) it likely was filmed around Whoopie Goldberg's limited shooting blocks during her recurring status on the show (this was back when Whoopie was highly phobic about plane travel and took trains/tour buses/ships to get places vs flying) -- not all of her scenes for "x" episodes were necessarily shot in the same week/two weeks that others shot "x" episode(s)/scene(s), with some of her scenes shot for several episodes within a given shooting block so as to accommodate her being in movies, doing standup touring, etc and et al. Though usually shot in-sync relative to full inclusion in "x" stories, some of her cameo appearances were shot literally when she happened to be in town and could come in to shoot for 1-2 days for inclusion in a given episode, sometimes as a relatively last-minute inclusion. (She *has*, in more recent years/the past decade, gotten better about her fear of flying, so now occasionally does it if warranted by necessity, though still prefers to drive/go by train, etc, to get to places when/where practical.)

But yeah, it’d be pretty difficult to predict the actual full plot, hah.

My annoyances: - beards not growing was explained because of the stasis field. But Data took them out of stasis. - their circadian rhythm was out of sync ‘by 24 hours’. So it would be _back_ in sync. To note the first time the probe is suggested by Data. The second time the probe is suggested by Riker. This was another one of those episodes where having a bunch of kids on the ship really creates some plot holes. How many of them are just too young to understand the importance of the need to keep this planet secret, or too stubborn to cooperate fully with the plan, and thus leave behind a bunch of clues that the Starfleet crew isn't aware of immediately. Like crayon drawings they don't tell their parents about, made during the missing time, either because they don't want these destroyed or they just forgot to mention them at the time. I just think there'd inevitably be so many clues left behind that they'd pile up and eventually this would all get figured out regardless. Maybe the only way it works is because none of the senior staff notice anything out of place, and they just dismiss the weird reports by the many low ranked crewmen and civilians onboard. Picard listens to Beverly, because he really knows her and trusts her judgement. Some Lieutenant Junior Grade or Ensign might not have the captain's ear.

Just to add why it's an easy S for me. I love not being ahead of the characters, that makes it a *good* mystery, an easy A. What takes it up to an S for me is how unique it is as an episode. I don't think this has been done before in Star Trek. Having gone around this before. The loss of time. Data not being able to be trusted. Great stuff.

A fun mystery definitely A tier for me as the fact Data is so committed to it that Picard is even threatening him by the end and pleading with him as far as Tori's well being. Just to get to the bottom of the mystery.

I like Geordi bringing up beard growth, as growing facial hair is a running gag on the show.

Just want to say that showing the episode trailer after viewing the episode is awesome and a great touch! I used to live and die by those trailers week to week as a kid. Back in the day, you didn't pay attention after the show - the trailer had done its job. But seeing it after, you can see what story aspects they felt would be the most appealing. Conversely, you can DEFINITELY tell when they're trying to dance around a lame plot.
