Tarja is famous for her head voice and the high notes. But lately she's been developing her low notes, her chest voice and the use of her speaking voice into songs a lot, so let's take a look at how that has evolved! No matter whether you like her low register or not, it's impossible to say she hasn't made quite a lot of progress with these techniques.
Thanks for everyone whose pieces of videos are in here, there were so many I didn't put the names as usual in the video, but if you want credits for some of the recordings just comment and I'll link your channel at the description :)

Tarja has improved her chest voice A LOT lately! It's so full and rich! I think I even prefer it over her head vocie, that's how much she has improved!

This is the only video on the entire youtube website that actually showcases how far she has gone and how good her chest voice is, one would assume someone with such a phenomenal head voice couldn't care less about their chest voice development or even if they wanted to try, their voice could have turned out to be horribly weak or uninteresting... guess what, not only has she the god given treasure that it is her head voice, she has this seductress, siren, deep metallic chest voice too! God must like her quite a bit. Now more into the video, you picked all my favourites, Darkness in Lisbon, the Pandemonium part from Russia, House of Wax and Supremacy from the shadow tour and genelec. The Christmas tour in Russia... I mean, every single time I see someone saying she is done I am like, wait a minute, are we living in parallel universes... If you actually follow her career and not just randomly dislike and pour hate into her festival performances, Nw covers or you happen to watch one or two random performances where she is jumping around switching timbres and not giving a fuck, if you happen to pay attention and peal out all biases from your brain you will see that she has never ever been this good, mature and proactive. The darling thing is even teasing us with a new album after releasing two in a row? And after such a portent as TSS , not a big deal, it is a huge deal. In a world where musicians keep committing suicide we need to cherish and appreciate the ones that are still here. Twenty years singing and influencing thousands of singers. Yes, I like Tarja, a lot. And yes I type a lot too. Letters major here :p

@Wailing vs Screaming I did say Tarja sounded like a goat. Precisely on Festivals. I loved her on Woodstock. Probably the only festival where she was on point. She sounded amazing but she sounded bad on Wacken and Hellfest and sounded bad on some of her Act2 DVD as well. You can stalk me there too read my comments. I have no problems in calling a spade a spade as they say. Tarja is a classical singer and classical singers always have an enormous difficulty in singing contemporary. It is no news. She should have hired help with it but she is definetely getting better in using her chest placement. She won't be a Floor any time soon but she is learning how to make the most of it. I think the biggest issue is that, unlike Simone or even Floor, that have similar chest and head registers, Tarja's chest register is very metallic, very raw and harsh, very different from her smooth and deeper head voice. So, I don't really know how one transitions smoothly between both without major disconnection but that's where a vocal pedagogy master would help. Btw you think FML and me are the same person and that I don't criticize Tarja. So, I will help you with the stalking. Here is an example of many kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXeUZIGpptKZZ9E And another one kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6rYg6aOd8prfKM

i am so amazed by her incredibly strong low chest voice. its so intriguing. she has evolved a lot with lots of adlibs and free singing. I am so happy for her change. The problem right now is her mixed voice. her always puts too much chest voice so she sounds struggling and weird during the head /chest transition. I dont like how she sings Ever dream. she showed balanced mixed voice back in NW era when singing slaying the dreamer belting out E5 . Hope she could find the balance. Great Video

It can cause trouble to find a natural way to go up through the passagio. But personally I am so glad that she uses that SOO necessary notes. The glottal closure is way more efective in someone who sings in chest, as a result, the vocal chords lengthen and restore the natural tone (tonicity) of the chords, producing a healthy and extension of the register. Here we have Maria callas giving her perspective of chest notes kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmOsnX2XlKiZj9E. It's a clip of 1 min she talks at the end.

Idk i personally think she sounds the best with her head/mixed voice. Her chest voice sounds very heavy and dry and idk for others some ppl might like it.But its just rlly uncomfortable for me to listen to it.Technically speaking she is much more comfortable using it and it is much more resonant. However due to its heaviness and dark coloring it can put ppl off.

Just watched Victim of Ritual from Artmania this year, and even knowing full well how she sings in rock gigs nowadays, I was taken aback by how she sounded. Disliking her chest voice is one thing, but she also sounds very sloppy and out of sync. I especially dislike her latest interpretations of Ever Dream. In my opinion it doesn't fit the song. But all in all, I sort of have mixed feelings about her chest voice. I was impressed when I first heard the part in The Siren back in 2004, and I couldn't believe it was her voice. It is in such a contrast to her head voice. I've always wanted her to play around and be as versatile as possible. I commend her for being curious and persistent in training her voice. I believe there's a place for different aspects of her voice, but as with most things, balance is key. Having said that, her and my (and any other person's) ideas of balance and music in general might and most likely do differ more or less. But to be honest, to my ear, listening to House of Wax in that Gnelec video is not all that pleasant - even though I can appreciate how strong her voice sounds, and how much control she's got. Another issue for me is that she seems to use her chest voice in most of the songs, and keeps going back and forth between chest and head voice, almost like on a loop, in a quite predictable and repetitive manner, and I think that in most instances that isn't the most suitable technique. I mean, there's a different atmosphere and a different story in different songs, and surely they all require a unique approach and artistic interpretation.

I'm always very skeptical when people say "There's a talent for singing". There may be, but if you want to apply that to Tarja, it would make most sense if she wasn't studying music for 99% of her life. She learned piano at the age of 6, and has worked very hard on singing almost as soon as then. To me, this signifies hard work and dedication to the art, rather than a natural talent. If she started a band and never sang before and came out like she did back in 1996-1998, then I would say she had natural talent, but she had been practicing for almost 10 years before that.
