I've done a few videos over the years on Tascam 424 mkiii bouncing but I've never done one on bouncing to a 2-channel stereo cassette deck. So this video is about bouncing from the Tascam 424 mkiii to a 2-channel stereo cassette deck! Special thanks to Matt for sending the Nakamichi and 424! This video could literally not have been made without your generosity, Matt!

Great channel man! How much fidelity is lost when recording the two channels back to tascam? Is it more or less than ping pong bouncing?

Hi Mike, nice video. I normally use my laptop to master my tapes. I load it into a daw, then I highlight the noise floor before the track starts and remove it. Then if it's a fade out I also do that in saw so the noise floor is never heard. If there is a recorded finish in my track I tend to use some light reverb or echo to create an outro trail when I stop the tape on my 488mk1 again minimising and eliminating noise floor. I like finding workarounds and solutions and applying them to my work. Thanks for sharing your work my friend. Kind regards. Paul.

@@424Recording hey Mike, not yet, but I'm planning on doing one soon. I find that method a good lossless way of mastering from cassette because you are not adding anymore noise to the recording mixdown. Some people have told me that my recordings don't sound like they were done on an 8 track cassette multitrack recorder because of that technique alone. I find it to be a nice clean way of working with analogue tape. Some people might rightfully say that I'm using backward steps by working with analogue tape, but I really enjoy the workflow and the sound I get from it. Nothing can replicate the warm sound of tape.
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah! I'd say do what works. And that sounds like a great process. I've got similar compliments or maybe they were more along the lines of overcoming the noise floor and hitting the tape hot enough. That definitely seems like it would be a fun video to make though or explore. Cheers, Paul

Thanks for watching, Brandon! My buddy Jason has one of those; if you stop by the Discord he may be able to help out. Looking at it quickly, it looks like it does have an RCA line out so it should be similar to this method. There's also a Phones out, so you could use that, too, with a breakout cable. Cheers!

i use minidisk for bouncing off board. it is as good as computer but as convenient as cassette. this technique has the advantage of being able to go bsck a step if you need to as you can use a fresh tape in the 4 track or wind ahead, leaving your original 4 tracks.

@@424Recording After 2 bounces, the song had 8 tracks recorded on the 4 track. Because i forwarded the tape before copying the mix back, i still had the individual 8 tracks across 3 recordings. So not only did I hsve a sort of analogue 'undo' by winding back, I could also record all 8 individual tracks into a daw, sync them up and remix the same song but from all 8 individual tracks. Four track recording was fun and forced creative thinking in a way that the DAW doesn't seem to. I used to have an idea and just hit record. I think becoming entirely PC based in 1998 was probably what killed the hobby of music creation for me. That and the pressures of beoming a responsible adult of course - LOL! After moving house in 2001 i never recorded agsin. Your channel has reminded me of the fun I once had when I had no decent gear and just enjoyed making what I called 'music' (I'm not a real musician!) with what I had, and recording direct to tape.! :) Thank you.

I have a question about tape speed. If I record on 9.5 speed is that tape going to play in "slow motion" on a cassette player that plays 4.75 speed? If so, how do I record at a high quality and make high quality tapes for the masses? Thanks for your time and help, with videos like these.

@@424Recording Oooh, that's a tough one! I suppose I could go between the Zoom16 and the 424, but I haven't had any luck recording the full band on the 424. Even as a 3-piece, it just doesn't quite get the sound we are going for. Maybe we can figure out a way to bounce tracks or record intros and segues on the 424, or maybe overlay some backwards tape/guitar stuff that way. Basically we just keep getting stuck on getting the vocals right. Everything else is easy.
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, I remember you saying that. You definitely gotta use what works! What's challenging about the vocals? Just not the right sound? I've always found it helpful to research certain artists and techniques I admire; it might be a good jumping off point for you!
