I’m aware this video is several years old but for the sake of those new here. If the scale of the “one knob” compressor is the same on the Model 12 as the with the Model 16 your understanding of the compressor is way off. The knob(for some) is counterintuitive. For example: when the compressor knob is set to the 9 o’clock position the compressor is darn near a limiter. Attack is roughly 3 ms and Release is roughly 40 ms. Threshold is early at 4.5 dB. And the Ratio is a whooping 100 to1. Conversely when the knob is maxed (all the way up) the Attack slows way down to 8 ms, Release is up around 50 ms, Threshold is -45 and the Ratio is a pretty standard 4 to 1. You appear to be using the compressor backwards and as a self proclaimed compressor fanatic, the compressor on the Model 16 is, despite it being pre converter, absolutely stellar. So much so I’ve recently retired my beloved 160A.

Thanks for Your Videos. They led me to buy a Model 12. Major issue on my end perhaps others are having, I can have a full song recorded, Set all the Faders, pans and EQ the way I want them, Use the "stereo mix export" function and hit enter. The Unit exports the Tracks as they are, at full volume with out any of my adjustments recorded. Even if I mute all the tracks and try again, It will do they same thing....Even if I delete the tracks and over write it again, It still does the same thing. I have tried all the settings....Post, Pre, Live MTR. Its like two things are happening, 1. The Unit does not take my settings when it mixes the track down to the stereo file,. 2. Even if I delete a track and the unit shows it is deleted, the deleted track still prints to the master stereo track with the mixdown function. I must be missing something. As a stand alone unit, It needs to be able to mix down a tracked song as you would like it to sound. If you have had this same issue, I would love to hear about it. Try it... Record two tracks. Mix them down to stereo mix export.. Listen.... Then, go back, delete one track and try to over write it using the mix export. Thanks, Ryan.

I'm glad you've been enjoying the videos! I think a dedicated mix down video would be a good idea. I've had a couple questions about the master EQ section as well. If you check out page 47 of the manual I think it will answer your question. Have you been recording your mix to 11/12 before using stereo mix export? Great video. I also recently bought a Tascam Model 12 and love it. I wanted to get back to some old school recording methods vs using a DAW. I now find myself far more productive. Plus, I can still transfer the track files to a DAW if I need to do more critical mixing. As far as track management, my only suggestion would have been to put the drums on stereo tracks 9&10 and the "vocal double" on track 3. This would have freed up track 4 for any other overdubs you might want to add or allowed the acoustic guitar to have its own track. Again, great video.
@424Recording3 жыл бұрын
Great suggestions, Mutz! That's exactly why I enjoy recording outside of the computer as well. The track in the video would have taken a lot longer if I'd done it in the DAW. But you're right, too, there's the freedom to dump the project into the DAW and do some final processing and mixing. Great ideas, re: track management. I'll change the sub mixer to 9/10, Idk why I didn't think of that! Awesome. Thanks for watching and happy recording!

I think the Model 12 target buyer was live performers and small bands who wanted to track their shows. Zoom released similar devices (L Series) The “One Knob” compressor, while designed for simplicity, has its limitations, especially in the recording realm, was designed for quick live use to tame very dynamic sources like vocals. I’ve never heard a one knob compressor feature on any console that sounded great, although the Yamaha versions are a standout as better than most. Cheers to another great video. I've been hanging out waiting for delivery of my Model 12 back from servicing so your video was perfect use of this time. I agree with all your equalization decisions, and appreciate getting to compare 'with' vs 'without.' Your music is very different from mine but that actually helps me understand the EQ, compression, and other features that are oriented to less extreme signals than I tend to use. One complaint: when you showed compression on electric guitar you never let us hear what it sounds like with no compression. Oh, well. By the end of the video your song had grown on me. Another great video and song! Thanks a lot. Just realized that your microphone sounds like it’s de-essed; which is great. How do you achieve this effect? Is it the Art Tube mic preamp you previously mentioned? Or is it simply the Model 12’s processing? Thanks 🙏
@424Recording3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Zacharie. I appreciate that and thanks for watching. Hmmm, I'm not sure what's causing the de-essing effect. It must be the mic. I kind of had it pointed between the guitar and where I was singing, so I guess I was singing over the top of the mic more than dead-on, if that makes sense. It was running thru the MP but I think it was more of the singing angle than anything else. I think I was using the SM58... I actually bumped the highs on the Model 12, too. I have enjoyed the part 1 and 2 + the song is actually good, which is kinda rare when it comes to watch a tuto, thank you. I am sort of brainstorming bout that mixer to work with my band (we are 2), can we do overdubs (like if we bounced 2 tracks together) or the overdub here will overwrite the already recorded audio ? And does overdubs works too on puch in/out ? ?
@424Recording3 жыл бұрын
Ha! I'm glad the track was enjoyable along with the tutorial. Yes, you can do overdubs and bounce tracks. On these units, that is referred to as "swapping" tracks. You could also bounce the mix down to a stereo track and reload that to a new project (so you can save your original project). There's ways to save everything as you go but you can also overdub and overwrite if that suits your workflow, too. Yup, you can punch in/out just like you would on any recorder that supports that feature. Cheers and thanks for watching!

Very nice content simplifying things that are teddiously complicated in the manual. Just got my Model 12 this week. Question! I saw drumsticks on the side of your desk. How do you record real drums on your Model 12? I had multiple recorders before and can't figure out how to monitor a bass, a guitar, a piano recorded on seperate tracks while recording a 4 mics acoustic drumset EQd and panned onto stereo track(7/8) How do you assign 4-5 inputs to a stereo track? Or how would you go around recording an acoustic drum set overall?
@cfdemarco23 жыл бұрын
I like the song...vocals sound clean. I must admit, the Pre-amps in my Tascam DP 24 are better than the pre-amps in my Focusrite 18i20...which are a bit more noisier than my Tascam Preamps. I'm using inexpensive AKG and RODE-1 condenser mics. There seems to be a percussive distortion when I use the Focusrite. You only hear it when you solo the tracks, but it bugs me. But the Tascam DP 24 produces 100% clean tracks. I guess I should invest in a better mic, and dedicated pre-amp, for the DAW setup
@424Recording3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Carla! Yeah, the preamps make all the difference, and some are superior to others. It amazes me how different the same mic can sound through different preamps, what frequencies get emphasized, etc. If the DP works for you, maybe that can be integrated with your DAW?

I don't have a Model 12, but I'm curious...as long as you have everything tracked on tracks 1-8, could you mix out through the sub bus, bring that stereo feed back into channel 9/10, use the compressor on that channel as a gentle bus compressor to glue the mix together, and then put that result down on 11/12?
@YoMyNamesJakeG2 жыл бұрын
An odd question, but do you know if the digital compressors introduce any aliasing to the signal? I'm kind of torn between the model 12 and model 16. The model 12 has some great quality of life features (track swap, use of eq/compression post AD conversion/DAW Control), but I'm also very tempted to go the full analog route of the model 16, limitations and all. I'd be curious if you're able to measure this at all with yours and a sine sweep/spectral analyzer.

If you have a digital interface, an easy way is to bounce the main outs to the interface, so take the cables coming out of the main outs and plug them into the interface and record the mix in a DAW as a two channel bounce. This will retain anything you're hearing on your mix. You can also try making a stereo mix on 11/12. This is too complicated to explain here but check out pages 32 and 39 of the manual and you'll be able to figure it out. The other thing is, if you have the Model 12, you might want to change the mixer function to "Post EQ" for future recordings: check out page 45 of the manual. Good luck and happy recording!

@@424Recording ahh thats right, I remember you mentioning that a visit to the wizard is required to get the pedal fixed. The music video has taken a backseat. There's a scene that i need to film in a shop and I don't want to be wearing a mask. I'll wait until masks are optional and finish it off.

Oh, gotcha! Yeah, hopefully, that will be soon so you can finish that off. Yeah, there's something with the output of the pedal; there's always something, right? Stuff getting busted and stuff getting fixed haha

@@424Recording hopefully its an easy fix for you and yeah, there is always something. Just as long as it doesn't stop you pumping out albums and making videos 😎

I hope so! Thanks, Joe! P. S. The Model 24 vids (and all your vids) have been killing it!

@@424Recording Thanks man but they are pure rubbish haha. One thing that stuck out on the compressor portion of the vid, are you able to apply compression on the recorded tracks? The model 24 only allows compression on the way in.

I believe so. With the Model 12, you can set the recorded signal to three different settings: pre comp, post comp, and post EQ but I guess you would still have to re-record or bounce out of the mains
