sirBrouwer There are even companies (e.g. Watkins) that proudly proclaim their vanilla is 100% artificial! I suspect this is an artifact of the (unfortunately legit) 80s vanilla scare, when tons of "pure natural vanilla" sold in the US and Canada turned out to be tonka bean extract. Tonka beans contain high levels of the blood thinner coumarin and, like all legumes, can cause cross-reactions in people with soy allergy.

Truffles. Back when I was a student I worked as a gardener in a posh nursing home over the summer. One day I was up in the staff room having lunch and chatting with a couple of the nurses who enjoyed cooking as I did. Truffles came up and this voice appeared from one of the older nurses who was reading a magazine. "Truffles smell like sex!" We were all a bit agog sitting with our mouths open. She was like everyones favourite Granny and usually quite prim. Turned out her son was a chef and that's how he'd described them to her, and we all had to agree, they do have a slightly sexual aroma. A couple of decades later, everytime I use truffles or a truffle product her voice rings in my ears. Puts a different slant on coy Ben wax lyrical about them! :)

@@spicefreak4726 Grains of paradise are something I haven't tried yet, I find cloves are a bit medicinal with strawberries, but allspice works well. I'll have to find some Guinea pepper & see how that works.

the intro graphic for pretentious ingredients is wildly underrated.. it’s literally the aesthetic of any pretentious fashion / interior decor instagram page

As a gardener I LOVE to grow and eat Dino kale (especially as pesto). The lack of “curly leaves” means less hiding spots for the caterpillars that love to eat it, and it’s a practically bulletproof plant.

When COVID is done I reckon you all go to Barry’s house and search for pretentious ingredients

Like a treasure hunt, with a point system for finding the most pretentious in number and in level of pretentiousness. XD

I've had dinosaur kale in my garden for years, because it is actually very easy to grow organic and produces tremendous yeilds. It's very pest and heat resistant, it usually will last 3 or 4 years. After the first season, it gets tougher and stronger, but you can still eat it, and I leave it in the beds because it tends to attract the white fly away from other brassicas.
