The most pretentious ingredient of all? Gold. Has no flavor. It’s all for the bling. Gold flakes added only for looks, and to pump up the price.

Gold is one of the least reactive materials in the existent (it doesn't react with oxygen at all and so wont ever rusts or corrode) and a lot of properties from a very efficient conductor to satellites being full of it to block radiation to using it as a lubricator. If anything gold is one of the most useful mineral out there. It's golds extreme rarity why It's not used all around us and we rather go for the second or 3rd best option. Though, because of the uses of gold and Its rarity - It's also among the most stable things to invest to for really long periods. That is actually golds primary use.

K J The truffle in the past I saw the similar box at a market, it was about $10 and on the front of the box under the title also said it was also artificially flavored. I would say there’s probably maybe two pinches of truffle in it so they would market up the price. I don’t have high expectations for pasta advertised with artificially flavored.

I've had the truffle pasta before and it is really delicious, there is definitely a truffle taste. I think because they both just coated their palate with truffle they tainted the results. If you all haven't tried the pasta yet really give it a try, instead of EVOO try a nice whole cream salted butter with a dash of sea salt. Brings out the flavor immensely and doesn't make the noodles feel greesy like EVOO does.

@@noirceur_ we once did experiments with a black and a white truffle - shavings, minced, grated, on eggs, on fresh pasta, oil, butter, bla bla bla, and as you say the best approach was with warmed salted butter, grate the truffle in and sweat it very gently for few minutes - and onto the pasta. Close second was the tiny mini-bottle of truffled olive oil.

No he's right. Just because something's expensive doesn't mean it's pretentious. Truffle actually has a very nice and unique taste and there's nothing pretentious about it. Turning it into a paste and selling it in the tiniest jar for 80 quid as if it was spooned in there by the Pope himself is. That's what makes it pretentious.

I do like these taste testing videos, although some of the prices you paid makes my eyes water. So, I have a suggestion for you. Why not see how cheaply you can find some foods/ingredients from the budget style shops (like the German ones) to see how they compare to the expensive stuff. You could call it "Pleb or not"
