Harvest Guard rings are nitrite, and Tattler rings are natural rubber. If you have an allergy, this is important information :)

I use Tattler lids all the time, and never have a problem with sealing. It is critical to allow a ¼ inch more space than with the Ball lids because of the shape of the lids. Tighten the lids just as with the Ball jars, and the back off until you feel them give a little, then stop. When I started, I left the lids loose, as you did, and had more failures, but since I started tightening my way, I have not had a seal failure. I always clean the rims with white vinegar, but these lids are also not as “forgiving’ if you accidentally “tilt” the jar while putting in the canner, it will not seal. Also, you have to wait until all liquid in the jar has stopped bubbling BEFORE you tighten the lid down after taking them out of the canner, and not before. If you tighten before the liquid stops bubbling, you will get a seal failure after you remove the rings, and it cools completely. I NEVER boil the rubber rings, but I do put them in a bowl, pour boiling water over them, and let them sit in the water while I fill the jars. I have also found that these lids are really safe in the long haul. Ball lids that have sealed will usually stay sealed even if there is a minute air leak between the rubber and rim. The Tattlers will not. If you have a jar that is on the shelf, and it somehow had a small particle on the rim that didn’t prevent a seal at first, these lids will slowly release as outside air creeps into the jar.

thanks so much for this. I've been using Tattlers for years, and did te- tightening....just couldn't figure out why I had some stay sealed for 5 years.....some wouldn't stay till the next day. You just made my day...no my season.....no, my canning life!! lol😁🌷

add an extra 1/4 in. headspace if you are using small mouth jars. There is a volume difference and that headspace is important to keep the boiling contents from reaching the sealing ring as you are cooking the contents in a pressure canner......I also re-check my seals three weeks after

To Gunsand Guts, great information about how you are tightening before and after. A real challenge to keep it from syphoning. Your tips will help.

I have the newer ez seal tattler. The directions on box are different from the older tattlers. I wonder if you want to back them off or leave finger tip tight?
@kfl611 Жыл бұрын
I've read the instructions on old boxes of rubbers, they recommend you boil your lids, rings, rubber seals. I think if everything is hot, and the seals are hot and more pliable before you start to process it would make for a better vacuum and seal. I heard someone is coming out with a reusable metal lid, that uses rubber reusable seals. Thanks for posting this video. I've also seen people use the one time metal lids, with a rubber seal, as they had already used the one time use lid and they had no more lids, they just stuck a new rubber seal under the original used seal on the lid and they said it sealed up just fine.

Have you heard that you can use the rubber rings with the use of the metal flat lids that you already used prior There is a video showing that it works on utube

Hmm the harvest guard channel says to let them sit in the canner waiting. You took them out and THEN let them sit. They also say to tighten but not to crank them down. I’m not trying to be negative. I have no idea. I’m only practicing with them for the first time right now. I believe you go over the things that went wrong later on in the video I’m about to listen to that now. Thank you for the video!!

I'm sorry, I'm more confused that before I watched the video. The back story is I bought a few boxes of Tatler lids several years ago before all the unpleasantness of 2020. I used them to open kettle-inversion method tomato sauce and pickled beets. I filled hot sterile jars with boiling tomato sauce [boiling brine over hot beets in the other case], sealed the jars with hot scalded Tatler and tightened them down so during inversion, nothing leaked. Every jar sealed. I think what you're trying to tell us is that head space is critical in that the tatler/harvest guard rubber seal should not be contaminated by the contents of the jar during processing... Right?

I canned a lot of water to learn how to use them, there is a learning curve. My biggest thing I noticed is that some of my wide mouth rings were a bit out of round causing them not to seal.oily stock type things need more head space because the oil can splash up ND get between the red seal and the jar rim. Eat to practice with water a few times until you feel confident. I have more fails with thicker stuff like applesauce.

Buyer Beware! Do not buy Harvest Guard lids in bulk without trying them first. After following all their instructions I got about 60% failure rate and emailed the company. With every emailed suggestion, I followed the directions very carefully and could not get better than 50%, which I only got once. Unfortunately I had ordered in bulk after watching all the wonderful KZbin videos raving about the reusable lids. By the time my canning season came around I had passed their return/refund deadline.
@OffGridNorthIdaho Жыл бұрын
That's a shame. I know some people have had a lot of trouble with the reusable lids. My overall success rate was between 70-80%, which I'm happy with.

I'd like an update on yours throughout the weeks following you using them. As mine slowly came unsealed in my pantry I used Harvest Guard and like you, I believe I forgot to simmer silicone/rubber bands and lids so keep an eye out to see if they come unsealed.

I've put all my reusable lid jars in one place in my storage, and been checking the lids. So far I've only lost one, on a cranberry juice jar that froze and pushed up. Other than that, so far so good.
@peggykush69723 жыл бұрын
I had jam canned using these lids, and yes same thing. Came unsealed in a few days. Frustrating, and waste of good food. I did simmer the lids and gaskets.

Since the “new” Ball lids now say they only seal for up to 18 months… Do either the Tattler or Harvest Guard expect a seal for longer than 18 months?? Thanks for any info on length of seal time.

Hi Northern Idaho this is Southern Idaho. WARNING on both lids be extremely careful when taking jars out of pressure canner if the center of lids are bulging at all do not remove until it has cooled. Even if you can't get your other jars out if double stacked. Watch older videos 3rd degree burns. A towel over the jar may help a little but use heavy duty long insulated gloves. Take care💜

Oh wow, thank you! I will watch for that.

ditto.. mine burst as I was tightening the seal..fortunately I was right by the sink and my first concern was cold running water... Be careful with the rings when pressure canning as the higher heat can weaken the rings, and I found some of the colored "decorative" rings didn't seal even cold

Curiosity getting the better of me here, could you maybe use the rings on traditional lids to reuse them?
@OffGridNorthIdaho3 жыл бұрын
I don't think these rings would seal to the metal lids the way they do the plastic tattler. However, though, I've been reusing my metal lids too, and so far, all have sealed fine.

I just ordered Harvest guard lids last week. 50 regular & 50 wide mouth. Having a terrible time finding regular lids. Found 2 boxes of wide mouth Ball lids at Kroger, they wanted $4.99 a dozen. Lehman’s wanted $6.99 per dozen. I can’t afford to buy at those prices. I love your kitchen sink. It looks just like mine. I would like to can milk in quart jars, would it be the same process / time?
@OffGridNorthIdaho3 жыл бұрын
Yep, I'm tickled with the reusable lids. I've done more canner loads with them and love them. Im going to order another batch. Yep, I would do the quarts of milk the same: cold milk, cold canner, bring to pressure. I did a small batch where I only let it vent 10 minutes, and had one of those go off after a week, even though it sealed. So now I will bring them all up to pressure, then remove from heat. It adds about another 15 minutes on my stove.

I was watching another video about these lids and they said both of these brand are made by the same family. I’m not sure how true that is though.

Yep, if I recall correctly, I learned that one company is owned by the son, and uses an older design. Pretty cool!

why do you can milk at all? Have you tried any hot packing with either kind of lid?

I'd JUST seen another vid about these lids. They are both the same company/same family (owners). The son owns/runs Harvest Guard.
@rrbb363 жыл бұрын
@ Dawnie... CORRECTION: Tattler and Harvest Guard ARE NOT the same company! They are family members (father/son) who once worked together at Tattler, until they broke up and went their separate ways. Sadly, this isn’t the first family business I’ve seen break up this way, where one member went into competition with the other.
