Hi Linda! Very cool video :) Actually the aim of my tattos were to cover up selfharm scars, and it worked. They were at least 2,5 years old and very faded, so it worked really well and I don't have to hide them anymore. I would recommend this to anyone who has scars and wants them to be not as visible anymore. Keep it up Linda

I had a lot of huge scars from an accident that I got covered. I had to wait 5yrs before I could have them tattooed. So over the next 5yr (after the initial 5yrs) I got 30 tattoos. Each tattoo colouring was dictated by the scar. I worked closely with my artists and I listened to their advice. Best thing I ever did. Yes if I slide my hand over the scars of course I can feel them. But unless you know the scar is there (and you have to really look closely) can't see the scars at all. So happy and grateful dor the artists amazing work.

I had a small scar, it wasn't even that visible to others but it bothered me immensely so I had it hidden with a tattoo. There's no sign of the scar anymore and I'm a lot happier with it not staring at me.

I have a brilliant work of tattoo-art on my wrist. I have some self-harm scars there and I covered it up with an elephant tattoo and the scars are hidden in the elephant's snout as wrinkles. Even if the light does show my scars it just looks like great 3D tattoo. 😊

Thanks for covering how tattoos work on scars. Since most mine are straight, thin slashes I'll likely design the tattoos that go over those so the outlines follow the scar and fully cover it to avoid any color shifting. Seriously, thank you for covering this topic, it'll help me plan my future tattoos.

It’s been 11 years since I had scoliosis surgery and I’m 23 now I’m officially getting it done this year I know spine tattoos are tough but I’m so brave nothings gonna compete with the pain that I’ve been though with my spinal surgery plus I’ve got my ribs tattoos so if I can handle 2 sessions for 4hrs on my rib tattoo I could definitely handle getting my spine tattooed there’s a story behind it all of my tattoos have meaning to them you make something that was the hardest time of your life into something beautiful ❤️💕✨

Finally!! I got a lot of scars tattooed over 8-10 years ago and this is the first video that taught me something new! Thank you explaining why the older the better. I always figured it would be best to wait but never knew what was going on beneath the scar tissue.

You look drop dead gorgeous in this video! Also loved the information as I got one of mine to go over some scars that were self inflicted in my youth. I’d rather have something beautiful and meaningful to look at instead of a past I don’t always want to remember. This video definitely made me rethink covering over my surgical scars though because they are fully healed, but very ugly and didn’t heal very flat. I can’t imagine any design would look good after hearing your points!

I recently had over half of my collar bone taken out due to cancer. In a few short months I should be deemed cancer free! If everything goes to plan I would really like to get a tattoo underneath my scar. I don’t want to hide it, because it’s part of my story. Part of a huge event that took place in my life, and helped shape me into the person I am now. I do however want to get a tattoo underneath it. I’m not 100% sure what I want yet, but something to make the area look less harsh, and more beautiful. When I had surgery it kinda messed up some of the nerves so in some spots it’s more sensitive and In some spots is completely numb. Am I still able to tattoo over that. I know some spots will be more painful, but I’m wondering if it will mess up the tattoo in anyway. (Might be a stupid question but I want to be as informed as possible!)

This is for anyone with big, hard, dark scars: give it time!! Yes, even more time. I have a lot of self cutting scars, but a couple are just way bigger than the rest. They were huge, hard, raised, and red. Years passed, and they stayed that way even while my medium scars turned white and soft and my light scars faded. 10+ years on now, and my big huge scars are still big and huge, but they did eventually get light and soft.

My mom's colleague (teachers) got into a bus accident with her students on a field trip. Sadly some students died. Her colleague had a scar on her ankle from the event and it was a physical reminder of that painful day. So she went to a tattoo shop and instead had it covered by a rose. She wanted something beautiful there to cover the reminder but to also honor the lives lost. Tattoos really can really make beauty.

firstly- thank you so much for the video! I looked up "advice on tattooing over scars" yours was the first that. kind of just caught my eye :) Love the tatts by the way! note: don't read if sensitive to topics of PTSD & self harm... Thank You. just looking for some honest advice on this one without putting pics on the web LoL ? - - - so, brief intro before my question...I've been put through a lot physically to the point many people thought it was just extensive self harm until they saw the actual extent of where and how deep the tissue was damaged when I had enough one day and decided it's hot, I'm tired of long sleeves even on a hot day and threw caution to the wind sense I had finally accepted what happened and how i looked even healed up. Until my friend saw me walking and stopped just to say (not quite exact words as this is a public place haha ) "hey good to see you out and- wait, I thought you did those yourself.. but, just look at your back, chest, WTF did they do to you!? Sorry... I just figured you had some bad depression S--- going all this time". it back-tracked me 3 years of working on my PTSD and transitioning back into society after what happened. From there you can likely picture the type of scars I'm talking about trying to go over... it's so uneven and covers about 65-70% of my back and 80% of my arms up to my shoulders even the rest is about as bad too.. just a lot of intersecting scars that ranged from "they healed over about same as my skin" to "they healed up INDENTED" and others "they healed up RAISED" in the SAME fn area... :( it's been 2 yrs sense that mentioned backtrack- I've been home almost 5 years now.. Finally looping back around to getting ink done now that the scars are how they are, I've tried just about everything else while they were still too fresh to get tatts over anyways (and a few more methods even once they were cleared for inking per se), and it's what I originally wanted to do once the skin closed up and I could. haha... ANY ideas on coverage for this or even multiple tatts that just distract from the overall "walking carving board" look? if not it's okay. I know in my case it's more extensive than most could picture normally. I've done tatts on other people with some smaller more concentrated areas that seemed to heal up like mine but, yeah. :( (took a bit for me to type this even but it's the e-net: you don't have to see me and those face to face know this stuff without having to know me just by seeing me... so.. if you read this Electric Linda- thank you!

I was ran over by a full size passenger van when I was 9(26 year's ago). Due to this, my entire left calf, and my entire right elbow+ (about a 3rd of my arm) are heavily scarred. I chose to not get plastic surgery to cover them up despite it being heavily encouraged by my Dr's. I've now decided to get those area's tattooed. My main reason is due to placement in relation to my current, and planned tattoo's. Aside from funding( if I had no spending limit, I'd already be covered), my biggest hesitation is simply tolerance of the pain because of the scars sensitivity. Other concerns I had were, texture interference and uneven pigmentation.

In a couple days I'm turning 16 and getting my first professional tattoo. I've thought about it for almost a year now and it's going to be my great grandmothers signature since she pasted back in August. I used to self harm and I have a couple scars where I want the tattoo to be and I'm really hoping that part of the tattoo doesn't fade more than the other part over time because of the scar even thought it's already 2 or 3 years old. I'm also hoping to get a full forearm tattoo to cover the major self harm scars I have and by that time it would have been about 5 or 6 years old for when I want it (around 18) and since a lot are for deep I'm so scared that it'll be more visible than it is now

I had an accident just over a year ago at work, lost a thumb and they placed it into my leg, applied leeches for circulation and they wanted a toe to replace a piece lost in the accident, I declined, so the got rid of the rest of the thumb and it left a 30cm scar on my leg , I have real trouble looking at it, both my hand and leg, just an ugly reminder of the accident, I wanted to get it covered with a tattoo to help me psychologically get over it but I don't know if I can bare looking at it for years since you say its recommended time, I also have bad lungs and don't get out all that often anymore which for an adventurous soul like me can be awful, thanks for the advice, you look like a wonderful talented lady so I will try my best to wait and seek a good experieinced artist like yourself and find a design that flatters the scar and my personality, thanks again for answers x

Thank you so much for this video. You really brought my hopes up. I want to get my SH scars camouflaged with a cheery blossom tattoo next year. Just wondering: about how much will it cost to get your whole wrist tattooed?

Only your tattoo studio can answer about the cost. It depends on size and detail, or if the studio charges by the hour.

I see someone else asked this, but I didn’t see a reply, and I have a similar question. 6 years ago I had a double mastectomy. The scar lines are very thin and close to my skin colour. I am not trying to cover them, I don’t mind them, the tattoo has nothing to do with my cancer. I wanted to put a tattoo there because it represents the people closest to my heart. But the scars made some areas dead, some more sensitive, and some areas which feel dead on the surface, but painful if you hit it hard. Will a tattoo hurt more if it goes here? Especially since I have no fat, no cushioning there now. It is flat to the bone.

This was super helpful! I've been considering getting a scar tattooed but it's not all the same color (it's not all my skin tone color if that makes sense) so I wasn't sure if it'd be okay to get tattooed 😳 it's months old but looks like its healed well and after watching this video I feel more informed ❤ so ty!

Hi Electric Linda by the way I love , love , love all your amazing content it truly is so helpful . Bad ink ? Cheap ink ? Is there such a thing ? My son recently had a tattoo done & they asked him " Where did you have those tattoos done " ? My Son told them to which they responded , " Your tattoos are 2years old ?! To which my son confirms . Then he was told they have used the cheapest ink ! How will anyone know this ? Does cheap ink have an odd obvious odour to it ? Any other signs of cheap ink ? Thank you ,Electric Linda . Your awesome . Many thanks , Niki from the United Kingdom xx

Natalie Feriancek I’m not a professional by any means, but I did have SEVERE cystic acne on my back and check that left scars. I have talked to a few tattoo artists about possibly tattooing over some of it. I would recommend going in and showing a tattoo artist where you want it, and explain your concerns. If you have any pimples or anything that’s an open wound they can’t really tattoo over it. If all you have is scaring then they might be able to. If it’s flat or even slightly indented it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. If it’s really raised from the skin then it becomes a problem. I hope this helped! Good luck!

What about scars from picking? (dermatillimania) These are flat white round scars. Can those be covered up with some kind of design too? Thanks
