If the nation is franks and they assimilate the gauls the result is not the franks or gauls anymore its something different. If the nation is anglosaxon and they assimilate the normans than its not the anglosaxons or normans anymore, its the english now. Truth is not racist my friend, its just true. When the anglosaxons assimilate the danish and the norwegians, the result is again neither anglosaxon nor danish nor norvegian but the result is still 100% germanic. The Soviets seem to have some kind of "auto-balancing" feature to them where they'll ignore war with Germany if you do anything weird to Germany (deny Sudetenland, form new roman empire, etc), at least on historical focuses. I think technically it's to prevent the game from being too easy or something but in practice, like in this game, it usually just ends up making the whole thing a miserable slog.

There is strange "bug" in historic - if France, Netherlands or Czechoslovakia have not capitulated, Germany does not attack Soviets and often USSR ends up in a war with Allies.

Today I tried to sort of re-create your Austria refuses the Anschluss video and... it was a mess. A quite amusing mess, but a mess nontheless. First Britain and France guaranteed Yugoslavia, so I couldn't attack them. Then Italy joined the Chinese faction to later become a Japanese puppet before finally becoming part of the allies. Europe was border gore galore with Belgium holding most of Poland among other things. ^^ You should try it too, as I said it was quite amusing and utterly unpredictable past a certain point, despite supposedly being "historical".
