Those are beautiful revolvers. A couple years ago I picked up a newer 66 from a friend. I did not need it either, but I am keeping it because I love revolvers and I love .357 magnums. The 66 I got is the 6 inch blued with the 7 round cylinder. I paid half what you got yours for, but then again. we were not in a gun buying panic time back then. Looks like you got a good deal on a very good gun.

My first 357 was a Taurus 627 tracker. I loved it. It took a lot, and I mean a lot, of my earliest and often over powdered and over crimped rounds. Even took a squib 38 hammered back and jammed into the wrong cylinder hole of center shearing the copper jacket and some lead off the bullet before I got it freed up. Took it in to get inspected and everything locked up and lined up well. Still never liked ports on a pistol. Barrel length is already so short at 4" why start bleeding off preasure before its necessary. Looking at a 66 when I learned of the 65. What am I concerned with the tracker was the Microscopic play in the adjustable site I say microscopic but probably about a millimeter or just under of drift. I do prefer it over or notch style sight but if you learn to shoot aa frame notch style sight it won't ever shift. I'm a huge fan of the GP100 And ask these trackers go up more and more Options for $500 357 dwindle. My biggest concern is are the triggers the same and Is the 7 shot cylinder Inherently weaker then the 6 shot as I would assume would be the case. 1 of these would be amazing with an unflutted cylinder with The maximum amount of material left unaltered So it could handle Over pressure with ease. I'm not talking about 150% rounds But If I can hit 125 without Worrying about over stressing Any component in the revolver it would be worth the extra weight for deep woods carry

That 66 is newer, mid to late eighties. Lots of Taurus revolvers around that time when they were making changes, streamlining their processes, used older unused parts. So newer production runs had older serial and model numbers. Ie. the first 669s still said 66 on the frames.
@BowWowPewPewCQ3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I'm trying to date a 66? I just acquired. I had never heard that some 669s had 66 on the frame. I need to look into this.

Thanks for the video. I acquired a blued model 66 I'm trying to date. I've got some conflicting info regarding the logo, s/n, no recessed chambers etc. My s/n has 7 digits all numbers, chambers are not recessed, hammer block only. Have any ideas? How many digits in your s/n? Recessed chambers? Thanks on anything you can suggest.
@garageguy8793 жыл бұрын
On my 66 the serial # has 8 numbers,no letters & no recessed chambers.It does have the hammer block.Now on the 65,it has only 6 numbers in the serial #,no letters.It doesn't have the hammer block or recessed chambers.When I called Taurus,I was told that if there were no letters in the serial #,it was pre 1981.I was also told that they didn't have manufacture date records before that time.I hope this little bit of info helps.
@BowWowPewPewCQ3 жыл бұрын
@@garageguy879 It does help thanks. I've been told when they moved from FL to GA all the records went to the ATF. BTW, my 66 has a hole and screw on the front of the trigger guard like your 65.
@BowWowPewPewCQ3 жыл бұрын
@@garageguy879 Just for clarity... Your 65 has neither a hammer block or transfer bar? I thought the early revolvers(other than the .22lr)had a hammer block and Taurus changed to a transfer bar later. had a hammer
@BowWowPewPewCQ3 жыл бұрын
I've been doing a lot of research and got info posted buy a Brazilian police officer. He is referencing a factory tech manual published only in Portuguese. Per him, some models had alpha numeric s/n starting 1981. However 65 and 66 were numeric only until NOV1988. A "5" prefix was added in NOV1986 with 5124899 making the first 7 digit s/n. The first Stainless was JUN1986 with 110249. The extractor rod changed to left hand threads in AUG1981 with s/n 23764 on the 66 and 23728 on the 65. The logo starting 1981 will have a "long horned" bull with large "Taurus" and small "Brasil"1973 to 1981 had a Hereford bull with short horns. The "Brasil" was dropped in 1996. Transfer bar instead of hammer block happened NOV1988. The hammer lock started in 1998. Recessed chambers started being omitted with 68480 in JUN1985, was a mix of some with some without until 84978. I can't swear to any of this but it "fits" with my research. Just an FYI. FWIW

@@garageguy879 well mine is a four inch and has a 66 stamped into the frame and 636 on the yok. I thought the 65s were the blued steel version. Mine has no letter and start with 78... did you get a chance to see if a Smith 66 rear sight fits the 4 inch? Thanks and peace.
