A little bit of historic facts: the moors stayed in the country known as Portugal today by 538 years and not 800 years. Portugal did not exist as a nation when the moors were in Europe. Portugal was created by Christian Kingdoms that firstly expelled the moors to North Africa then they declared themselves as an independent nation of Portus Calus. Portus Cale (Latinised version for "Port of Cale", original Celtic name Callaici, Cale) was an ancient town and port in current-day northern Portugal, in the area of today's Grande Porto. The moors never managed to conquer northern Portugal. The name of the town eventually influenced the name of the subsequent country Portugal. The moors did stay in the south of Spain for almost 800 years. By the time the Portuguese started the age of discoveries and discovered the archipelago of Madeira, the Spanish were still fighting the moors. The Portuguese expelled the moors out of Portugal in 1249.

@Carlos Saraiva Yes, i heard about corruption problems in Portugal, one friend in Peniche talk about this with me amost half an hour... 😅 but what i see is Portugal has a feeling of unity, people like to work for Portugal and live in Portugal. The only one thing i missed from Portugal is civilized car drivers.

@@musicrchannal4304 Portugal is the 28th country with less corruption in the world...There are a lot of things to improve, but its not that bad about corruption perception. And yes, Portuguese are really very united against external threats (thats one of the reason why they were so well succeed in the past) but they are not that united about their own people inside the country...

Hi guys. Found your channel a couple weeks ago and been binging. LOVE, love your videos, they always make me smile. I was born in Lisbon, but live in Florida. Miss Lisbon so terribly😭. Thank you soooo much for all your vlogs, they are awesome. You guys are both very talented and make a great team. And.... your Portuguese rocks! If I may, I would like to suggest 2 things for you to try, one is Snails, Portuguese cook the most amazing tasty snails. They are fresh, not canned, available during season in most cervejarias. The second thing is leitao da bairrada. Bairrada is a town north of Lisbon specializing in suckling pig roasts, they are soooo delicious, wish I could be there right now to munch on some tasty, crispy, ears and snout. Anyway, keep up the excellent work, catching up on your old videos and looking forward to your new ones. Hugs and kisses from Florida😘😘

The only time I was in Tavira was at the end of July 2003, the year all Hell broke loose. We arrived in the afternoon, left our things at the hotel and went straight to the nearest beach. When we got back, around 8 PM, there was a group of hotel guests in the living room surrounding the TV set, watching the evening news: "half" the country was on fire. During the whole week, I left the car in the hotel's underground car park and every morning the car's thermometer invariably read around 30ºC! O_o The first night, we went to that square for dinner, thinking it would be nice to sit outside. Well, suffice to say that the following days we only ate at restaurants with A/C. Because of this I don't have the best memories of "Tavirra", like you say, but even so, of all the places I've been to in the Algarve, it was the 2nd place I liked the most. The 1st was, and still is, the Aljezur area. : )

"How come all castles survived the earthquake?" In part that's because they were built to resist attacks by war machines, like catapults and such. So they are sturdy. But in reality, even being sturdy, they didn't resist unscathed. Both castles and outer town walls were damaged by the earthquake. Some were rebuilt, some weren't. If you go to Portimão, you'll find no visible outer walls, but there's a fort by the sea, at the mouth of the river, called Fortaleza de Santa Catarina. Of the original fort, only the part facing land is still standing: the rest was destroyed during the earthquake and was never rebuilt (apart from the façade, the edification that is now there is much more recent). Ditto as to the outer town walls: they were already pretty much useless in 1755, and thus very degraded, but the earthquake destryed what was left almost completely. Only a portion remains today, integrated as walls in other buildings. Also, the epicenter of the earthquake was not in the Algarve. It's still unclear where exactly it was, but it's certain that it was at sea, somewhere to the southwest of Sagres. What is true, however, is that the epicenter was closer to the Algarve than it was to Lisbon, and therefore all the effects of the earthquake were stronger in the Algarve. There were huge land movements, the tsunami wiped out everything that used to lay by the coast, especially in Western Algarve, and whole villages simply disappeared. Before the earthquake, the river Arade was navigable by large ships upto Silves. The earthquake rose the riverbed to such an extent that the main port in the Arade had to be transferred to Portimão instead.

Most people don't know but most castles in Portugal were renovated or rebuild by the portuguese regime in the 1940's, most of the time using criminals or political prisoners. From Lisbon, Sintra, alcácer do sal, and most of the Algarve, the castles are from the 1940's.

And Tavira is also famous for their salt. Salt from Tavira is exported even to the US. Some Michelin chefs do use the "flor de sal" from Tavira. It is possible to see the salt in the aerial drone footage.
