The EA network is built and ran by VW group, how could it not work prefect with the Porsche. This is the number one thing these networks need to work on. The Tesla network rarely has these issue. Still absolutely love the car.
@ecodweeb4 жыл бұрын
Tesla has 908 Supercharger sites in the US. In two years EA has thrown up 500 -- that's 55% of the footprint in considerably less time than it took Tesla to reach 500 stations in the US. The number of hardware makers to meet the federal timelines and avoid more fines was 4, and due to reliability issues largely on the east coast, that's been dwindled down to two manufacturers. Hardware replacements, site convenience upgrades, and batteries to avoid demand charges/even grid load are all things they're actively working on while still building out more stations. By the end of 2021, Electrify America will have 800+ locations in operation. This is simply unprecedented and shows why doing it quickly is going to sacrifice quality.
@leenva4 жыл бұрын
@@ecodweeb let's not make excuses in comparing the pace of a startup company to that of a company that has the backing of vehicle manufacturing Goliath VW that has to meet requirements that resulted from VW's stupidity. Also, let's not challenge the number of stations each company has, Tesla's stations average about 10 stalls while EA averages between 2-6 usable stalls (at least that's what I've seen, correct me if needed). EA expansion is what everyone should root for, but the low number of stalls and shitty quality makes it seem as if this is only for the optics of going electric.
@ouch10114 жыл бұрын
To be clear, EA is paid for by VW. They don't build the stations or the chargers, that's all done by 3rd party. They also aren't designed to work only on 1 car, like the superchargers. It's not an excuse for the poor reliability, but if you are going to throw insults even if they are deserved, at least make sure your info is accurate.
@kens97sto1714 жыл бұрын
@@leenva Doesn't matter how much financial power Volkswagen group has the reality is it's exponentially larger volume of building the system out in the shorter period of time. They could have thrown three times more money at it but you still have third-party contractors that have to build out those systems manufacturers to build the chargers etc they can't just wave a magic wand and make it all work even with an unlimited budget. Also something to keep in mind is this is a press car it could be an early manufacturing sample or possibly even a late prototype. That could account for the weird glitches on overcharging and also handshaking. I don't know this for a fact but it seems to me having this many problems at different chargers that he is successfully used previously would indicate to me that the problem might be with this particular car not so much than that work itself.
@evroadtrips6894 жыл бұрын
@@kens97sto171 Look I'm not trying to knock the work that EA has done. I think the more charging stations there are and the sooner they come online the better. My whole goal is to move the car industry to greener energy sources. I think having a lot of charging stations will help with this goal. I have talked to a lot of people about EV's and the number one thing I've heard is problems with charging or lack of charging. This was definitely the case three years ago for pretty much every car manufacturer besides Tesla. Has it got better in those 3 year 100%, will it get better in the next 3 years absolutely. But when you are trying to travel long distances in an EV and you get somewhere that only has one charger in the town and it doesn't work, this is a big problem. The other thing that Tesla has done is build in redundancy. Most superchargers have two or four cabinets running an average of 8 chargers. This way if two of the chargers are broke or one cabinet is down you still have options. I would like to see EA and EVGO doing this also.

Watching all of these charging fails at the Electrify America stations only reaffirms how relatively stable and reliable the Tesla Supercharger network is. The Fast Lane channel did a video where they have a Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E at DC fast chargers, and while the Model Y's charging speeds weren't high likely due to sharing the charging station with another Tesla and possibly having a cold battery, the Mach-E was having trouble similarly to Kyle here and it took them 3 tries before he got it to charge. And even then, it was charging at a slower speed than the Model Y was. Though Kyle's attitude during these moments is certainly upbeat, I'd imagine many others in the same situation probably wouldn't be very happy, especially considering how much more the Taycan costs. And for others, it's probably convincing them that EV's, or at least non-Tesla ones, aren't ready for primetime.

Great video as always! The Taycan seems like a nice car and I agree it gets a bad rap. However, I am really disappointed to see all of the issues you ran into with the Electrify America network. With how long it takes to authorize charging+handshake+potentially move the car to a different spot, it seems Tesla supercharging may be faster. How do they expect this to work when more cars are on the road and these stations are full? Also, a great video idea would be to run a MS LR+ or Model 3 LR side by side with a Taycan. See who gets to the destination first.
@kens97sto1714 жыл бұрын
That question has been answered. They just finished a cannonball run in this very car and beat their previous record in his model 3. Again I believe they had some charging problems that they worked out with direct contact with Electrify America. I have a suspicion that because this is a press car it could be a early production car or even a late prototype car. Could explain the issues with handshaking and overcharging etc. Don't know this for a fact but considering Kyle has used some of the same chargers on other cars without problem lends me to think that it's an issue with the vehicle more than the network in this particular case. Although Electrify America certainly has their fair share of issues. Keep in mind they have built over 500 charging stations in the last year the rate and pace of construction is really astonishing. It's not really surprising that there are some problems and glitches, someone else mentioned in the comments that there may have been financial penalties from the federal government if they didn't meet certain build out numbers within a certain time.
@Ricers4 жыл бұрын
@@kens97sto171 It is hard to compare cars on a long distance cross country run. I am sure there were lots of variables outside of the vehicles that affected times. We will have to wait to see the cannonball run video for the Taycan. I still think there would be value in seeing a side by side Tesla vs. Taycan rally for a shorter distance (400-600 miles). Regarding the build out of EA, if 3 out of the 4 chargers at a station do not work at stated charging speed that is not impressive. Owners are going to have issues if just one other person is charging at a station.

Very nice video! I love your attitude, I would have been very frustrated. You will be interested that I got 29.6 Kwh/100 miles on a trip from Goshen, AR to Ft Smith and back with 20"Turbo wheels at 40 psi on September 12, 2020 in my 4S. If you don't know that is a mountainous area so we went down hill, then back up hill. The trip was done at the speed limit which was mostly 75 and some 70 after we got out of town. Interestingly I also had some charger problems last night at the Rogers EA station. The Porsche connect app would not bring up the stations and neither would the EA app. I had to call them to start the charge. Today, the Porsche connect app brings up the stations.

For someone considering a used Taycan,...or say,...a new or used i4 M50,...i5 M60, or even a Tesla, this has been a perfect video to watch. In addition, I thank you Kyle for all of the transparency regarding the EA charging network ...of which, I'm about half through the vid and view their network as about an 80-90% network,...or viewed another way ...a 10-20% fail due to the availability of WORKING really Fast Chargers! Those that want to invest in an electric vehicle don't want to have one foot in the electric camp and the other foot in the ICE camp. So, as much as manufacturers want to sell EVs, unless they are willing g to invest in the "Charging Network" at the level of Tesla, then the migration to EVs from ICE vehicles will be a lot slower than anyone want to happen! Folks are accustomed to making a road trip on 1 ...to 2 ...to 3 tanks of gas,...and with an EV,....and depending on which EV, that would mean 1-2 stops per equivalent tank of gas distance! When I visit family near Tampa from Northern VA, I can make the trip (900 miles) within 2 tanks of gas in an X5,...a TT V8 X5 at that. Also, I usually stop about 4 times, at the border of VA/NC,...the first Rest Area in SC ...and either in Brunswick, GA area or Exit 2 just near the GA/FL border and then around Ocala area. So, I'm not against having to stop for charging, but stopping and not finding working Chargers is a major Fail! In parting, the 900 mile trip takes me 17hrs going and 15.5 hours for the return trip. If I could make the same trip in an EV in about a +1 hour difference, I say that would be a win for me.

@jacksonmurphy84494 жыл бұрын
@@siskiyouforest4186 I grew up near Siskiyou! My one comment is that Tesla range is trash if you’re going 80 mph. If you’re a free way traveler, it seems Porsche is king. They also beat Tesla in the Cannonball Run meaning it IS possible to road trip and there IS infrastructure out there. Also, I don’t like to rely on numbers put out by manufacturers. Tesla seems to be very liberal with its range numbers, while Porsche has always been very conservative. Unless it comes from a trusted third party, most manufacturers can put whatever achievable number they want to their specs even if it’s only achievable in the lab. As far as cultural appeal, I feel it’s hard to argue that people WANT Tesla’s. You can’t argue that point unless there are other options. They just like having electric cars that can drive themselves. I really dislike the Tesla exterior and interior design and find the whole package hard to stomach at their price points. You could argue that there is significant cultural appeal around the Ford Focus as well, but it doesn’t mean they’re the best car out there.

I'm not surprised the car wanted to stay to the west of FL, I have family members that recommend that too - traffic on the east coast of FL is much slower.
