College is a great investment, but you HAVE to have a plan. Do NOT decide to go and major in something without thoroughly researching the end goal and ROI. From there, pick community or university based on your career, cost, and personal preferences.

@@FPSBurg I know a few welders. The riskier jobs are really lucrative, but not the safest. No matter what it'll affect your eyes over time. My recommendation if you really want to learn, and don't mind working your ass off. Go to an oil field, and prove you're worth being taught.

@@FPSBurg look into joining a trades union that involves welding. My friend went to trade school for a year for welding and joined the pipe fitters union. Journeymen rate (5 years after joining the union) is $43/hour, 1.5x anything over 8 hours a day, 1.5x on Saturdays, 2x on Sundays and holidays, and a $12/hr pension that also scales with overtime. You get paid pretty mediocre in the beginning, but after 2-3 years you start making good money and obviously 5+ years you’re making more than 90-95% of Americans. $43/hour x 40 hours x 50 weeks is $86,000/year and that’s before any overtime. The union also gets you jobs and automatically enrolls you in unemployment between jobs, pretty sweet gig if you ask me. Non-union jobs will look good in the beginning but they do not pay accordingly once you’re an experienced worker like the union jobs do.

Unless your thinking of going for math, physics, chemistry, or biology then there is no reason not to go to trade school. I would much rather my kid get an art degree than a business degree, because at least with the art degree you learn the tools to master a skill. If your not looking at those majors then trade school 100%

@@deadheadcentral2514 Business is easily one of the better majors. I actively advise people not to major in bio. Engineering, nursing, and degrees that are pre-requisites to specific jobs (accounting, actuary, etc.) are best imo. General STEM majors like physics, chem, bio, are usually not the best choice.

im not going to say college is a bad idea because obviously college is a good way to a decent paying career, but if you go make sure you're getting a damn degree that has a good ROI like a degree to be a doctor, engineer, nurse etc... dont go pay 200k for a degree to be a Tuba player. that being said, the trades are way underrated and with a year or 2 of training you can make 50k+ easily. you could also look for a company that pays for your education. i dont know the specifics completely but for example my friend works for UPS and im pretty sure they paid for his education and within a few years he was making 100k a year. if you know you are smart and you have an entrepreneurial mindset you could just skip college and start a business but thats obviously high risk. if you're good at sales you can make damn good money starting a sales business or even just being an employee.
