This same hit used to be legal and done daily almost with no bitching in the old days. Head on a swivel. Used to be part of the game. We were also taught to hit with top of head into chest so helmet naturally slides up into facemask pushing back head and resulting in perfect form tackle. Illegal now. Im not even sure i could do a half speed legal nfl tackle. Its like tackling with no pads. Tougher to do. And im a 12 year vet #nfl

Plus it was part of the culture for everyone to do the "whoooo whooo whoo" bird sound every head on swivel crackback. Then hope it made #espn "you got jacked up". Dont do this in flag football either even if on line and technically legal. The crowd will boo even if the entire other team backs down. So dont do this in flag football i learned.

From your screen it doesn't look bad. Try getting bulldozed by a 6'4 dude running at you at full speed when you're not looking. Lewan does have a history for being a "nasty" player as well as some shady off the field shit before he got drafted so it's not surprising he was targeted.

@@prophetmaster4997 yea bro I totally get what you're saying, and I'm sure it was a lot worse than what it looked like on TV. I'm just saying that, compared to other hits I've seen, it didn't look as "jarring" or brutal. A lot of that is because he's a big guy, so his body response doesn't match how hard the hit is... "A block going back toward his own goal line?" What are they talking about? I've watched this hit a dozen times and I still don't see anything dirty or crackback about it. He clearly knocked Lewan back toward Lewan's goaline. He didn't hit him in the head or knees or back . He hit him squarely in the chest and shoulder. What? That “crack back” rule is about as dumb of a rule as I’ve seen. If you are blocking face to face with someone, and not spearing Witt the helmet, that is not a cheap shot. That was no blind sided or anything. Hit the man chest to chest.
@BigSkyCurmudgeon Жыл бұрын
yep, and furthermore, the CRACK BACK rule was installed because of the blocking below the waist, usually taking a knee or knees out of action. the blocker was then told to block above the waist. in this case the block was a legal hit, above the waist and on a potential tackler in the vicinity of the ball. there may have been helmet to helmet contact, but it was incidental, not intention spearing.

herogibson what about it was illegal? Looked good to me. It was almost late and if there was any helmet contact it wasent the blocker’s fault. What happened during this play was unfortunate and although Lewan didnt do anything wrong neither did Branch. Play until u hear the whistle and the moment a turnover occurs defense becomes offense and vise versa. But i gotta say that was a big hit and it probly woulda killed a fully grown grizzly bear but is Lewans voice, “Puney bear”
@TheInspectorDilfordDa3rd4 жыл бұрын
@@nodabot You'll check out the current rulebook to find out the actual reason, but it's considered a blindside hit. Ever since the headhunting/targeting scandal they've been slowly enforcing rules on what kind of blocks are legal or illegal. Pretty much if the person isn't facing you to the point that they can't see you within peripheral view, pretty much guaranteed that it's illegal.
@b0rnfr3334 жыл бұрын
Don’t even remotely understand how you think this block looked fine!!?? It’s clearly an illegal, not to mention dirty, block
@EricM934 жыл бұрын
@@b0rnfr333 How long have you been watching football? that's how all interceptions and some WR blocks on corners happened for literally decades. As long as you hit their front side it used to be legal. That's why they coached everyone to keep their head on a swivel. I understand why it's illegal now, but the guy is trying to block someone who is trying to tackle the ball carrier, and used to be a very commonplace occurence in football, again, as long as you got the front side of their jersey and not the back.
