She has spent the past few years releasing vault tracks and deluxe editions that it's easy to see her thinking that her fans just want as much content as possible. i can't believe that taylor who made evermore and folklore (both 7's from fantano) is the same taylor who made the first part of this album. The songwriting in both evermore and folklore is graceful, witty and actually kind of poetic. I expected the same level of songwriting from this album because it was named "the tortured poets department" but i was greeted by "tattooed golden retriever" and "where's the trophy? he just comes runnin' over to me". The only songs i liked were "so long london, loml, guilty as sin?". I also liked the idea of clara bow, but the execution was not really good. there were a lot of potentially good songs that were just shot in the foot by either Taylor's corny lines or horrible beats by Jack like "fortnight." ALSO, wasting a FLORENCE WELCH feature on a tourism ad-sounding song should be criminal. the songs sounded like scrapped songs from over the years piled into one album which would explain the reason why it feels all over the place and incomplete. I wish the anthology part + so long london, loml, guilty as sin? and clara bow was the album itself. the other songs shouldn't have seen the light of day. an album being bad is one thing but this was disappointing if you understand what i mean. aaron dessner is the sole hero of this album. anyways it's just my opinion lol

It been tough being a Taylor Swift fan (a sane one) and constantly defending her music against all the stereotypes and lazy criticism for years just for her to drop an entire album that literally highlighs all her worst traits and tendencies as an artist and kind of proves all the critics have a point. Not to mention she released at a time where everyone is so tired of seeing her and hearing about her all the time, really not a good move from someone who is so PR minded. Im mostly just dissapointed and annoyed by its exsistence... imagine another year and a track list half the size of actually amazing songs and instead we get the equivilent of 6 trays of mediocre cookies pulled too early out of the oven. Like gee, thanks. We just wanted Reputation.

I think it's the other way around, an album as mediocre as this can only sell when the fans are ecstatic and are willing to buy anything, it's no coincidence that there hasn't been a single released. "Too big to fail" is a perfect way to explain Taylor's position right now. I've never been a fan of hers since I feel like I've never heard her try something new or have songs outside of the variations of love/heartbreak/i dont need you anymore. This album was especially lifeless and I hope the many diehard Taylor fans will wake up out of their coma....they won't but I can dream.

I find it interesting that you say she's not aware of how weird her behaviour comes across on songs like the Black Dog. Listening to it, I felt like she very much is aware, she's just not interested in making herself palatable. To me, the whole album is her describing just how temporarily insane she felt and behaved in this particular moment of her life.

The booklet is her sober self saying "that wasnt me that was Patricia" and the album is full of self depreciation/self irony but some people will listen to it once and claim that she's not aware of what's going on. I think part of why Madonna's post Music work is far less consistent (relative to her past work, most of those albums are still WAY better than most anything anyone else was putting out in similar time frames - but we don't judge superstars against weaker craft, do we?), is because of a quote from her that occurred after Music and before American life where she said "at this point I feel like I can do whatever I want". Yeah, Taylor is having that moment now, and while she can always bounce back from it (Confessions on a Dance Floor and Hard Candy are way better than given credit for, for example), it might just mean this is now the era of a slow decline in relevancy. It happens to literally everyone. Katy Perry aint having now the days she was having back during Dark Horse, plus or minus 4ish year. It can't be 1989 forever.

It's definitely a hard album to judge, but I think a lot of people are taking a negative stance on it without trying to understand what she's going for here. From the start, I listened to the album not as some deep carefully-crafted masterpiece, but as a sort of melodramatic satire. She's portraying a character throughout the album-- the tortured poet. The lyrics are meant to be cheesy and fun and humorous. You're not meant to take it super seriously. Some of the tracks, of course, set a more serious tone to them, and when they do it's pretty obvious, but tracks like "Down Bad" are very clearly just TS's millennial humor kicking into gear. She's making fun of the people who are making fun of her for thinking that she's some poetry god. It's a weird meta thing, but there's definitely something interesting there if you think about it. I think it's fun to hear her talk about GTA and sex, not taking every song as if it's the most precious thing in the world, and then on some other tracks putting in the effort to make some truly beautiful moments. It's essentially a switch-up between how she's done albums in the past (mostly serious with one or two fun songs sprinkled in, like Karma or This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things). Sonically, I do agree that it's a bit repetitive at times, because she's been very comfortable in that kind of sound she's gone for in the past few albums. Very indie, soft, almost mesmerizing production. It works wonders with her voice, and it's incredibly relaxing, but it could have definitely benefited from a switch-up in order to make the album a more cohesive experience.

i feel like “the manuscript” is the only song on the album deserving of the album’s title, not only because it has the meta aspect of her writing about her songs, but because it’s really the only song that actually has a convincing aspect of tragedy to it and doesnt come off as immature like many of the songs on both sides of the album does. taylor has absolutely gone through traumatic events in the past (being a child star, john mayer, etc) but the further into her career she gets and the more and more her fanbase obsesses over “lore” the more it seems taylor has to treat every aspect of her life with the same magnitude in order to keep this image. “the manuscript”, though, because it is about the state of her music, actually does successfully portray a very depressing vignette of what happens when your biggest songs about your experiences with love and how the world defines you largely within the context of your current and past relationships. the last line of the song most likely does refer to john mayer, but i feel like a lot of people are missing the point by focusing on that alone. with the line between her public and private self being so blurred, the story of her life isnt 100% hers anymore - it is constantly digested spat back out by millions and millions of people per day. the prospect of such a thing is terrifying, and yet, that’s her day-to-day experience. i still think the “tortured poet” aesthetic is mostly vapid and self-serving, but, honestly, there’s a little bit of truth to it.

They can drop any new sandwich or drink and a horde of people will go gaga for it, no matter the mediocre taste or the awful nutritional value. And the execs at the restaurant will roll in the colossal amount of income generated regardless of the products' quality.

idk if Melon is rediscovering his love for music and producing music-related content in his recent videos, or going genuinely insane

The Black Dog is pretty great though. You act like no one has every looked at someone’s texts to see if they were cheating. Taylor isn’t endorsing stalking an ex who forgot to stop sharing his location, she’s flawed.

I know you say that no sane person could relate to the black dog but honestly weve all done something “creepy” or “crazy” like that and then spiraled. Heartbreak makes people do weird stuff. At least she turned it into art instead of being a stalker lol.

While I do agree with much of your commentary, reading her "In Summation" poem that went along with the album far elevated my listening experience - especially regarding some of the commentary of her lyricism on songs like The Black Dog.

I reckon it would be cool to see Taylor work with St Vincent again. The music could be cool with a more disco/rock influence.

I genuinely love this album, I think it's great, but it's nothing new for Taylor. I'ma need her to get rid of Jack, she's been working with him for a literal decade now. I'm not blaming Jack, but I do think working with other producers is the way to go. If she doesn't want to keep making the same music then she's going to have to step out of her comfort zone again. Also...ditch the long ass albums please. I do like all of the songs but so many of them (on a lot of her albums) could've been cut to make the albums more like an artpiece (which is how I think albums should be viewed) than a playlist of songs that thematically/sonically fit together.

Masterful review, Anthony. This reminds us, again, why good critics are part of the living art, and why they need to bring the uncritical down to earth.

The Tortured Swifties Department (Anthony's Version) No honestly, this was great two part review. There is so much hype for her that she gets away with mediocrity and still breaks all the records. Mind blowing

I’ll never understand why the Swifties sanction her creepy obsessive behavior towards her exes, when they would be up in arms were the roles reversed…
