This is one of my favorite all-time Taylor bridges. "Quiet my fears with the touch of your hand, paper cut stings from our paper-thin plans" scratches my brain in the best way. Her use of metaphor in all of her songwriting is unparalleled.

Can you explain that lyric to me?
@IvyCowboy
@IvyCowboy 8 ай бұрын
@@juanjeanjohnful I see it as referring to the relationship as delicate and a little treacherous -- like going into it with the best intentions and then having it slip through your fingers and leave a mark. But mostly I just like the way it sounds all together -- it's very pleasing to the ear.
@IBRADG
@IBRADG 8 ай бұрын
@juanjeanjohnful -- she's saying that what they planned together or what he planned was not very dependable/sturdy (it was paper thin).... and despite the fact that it was supposed to be no big deal, it left behind a dreadful pain... much like how paper cuts can be so darn painful, even tho they are surface level. It truly is a brilliant lyric and it's always stayed with me.

5:26 the reason her songwriting fees atypical is because her songs are fully fleshed out poems which just happen to ALSO have their syllable counts set to a lyrical tempo that can be built upon. So, each of her poems are the most challenging and complex style of poem to write, because each of them have the specific guidelines allowing it to become a song bs regular spoken word poetry. She was thunderstruck by romance era poetry during lockdown when she visited the lakes district; where lyrical ballads was written. Ever since then her lyrics have evolved to another level, in my opinion. She’s been winning awards for poetry since she was seven years old. She didn’t start putting it to music until age 9 when she got her first guitar

People often miss Taylor’s incredible lyricism because she manages to package it into catchy pop songs. She’s an incredible storyteller and has always said herself that she isn’t a singer who writes her own songs, she’s a songwriter who gets to sing her own songs.

Taylor is an incredible storyteller and a master of the metaphor. It's one of the reasons why there are colleges starting to offer courses that study her lyrics and poetry. Stanford's is "The Last Great American Songwriter," which is a play on her 'folklore' track "The Last Great American Dynasty." Though, it is a student-taught course, but still. She is no joke.

One of my favourite Swiftisms (and it’s from a song I don’t even love all that much) is instead of “I forgive but I don’t forget” she says “I bury hatchets but I keep maps of where I put them”
@kelloneill74
@kelloneill74 8 ай бұрын
It made me feel so happy hearing you compare her songwriting skills to Paul Kelly and John Lennon. So many uptight middle aged men in my generation get so mad when she’s compared to the greats of their time. But her lyricism DOES deserve to be put right up there with musicians like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. I grew up on these guys and revered indie female artists like Bjork and Tori Amos. Taylor is every bit as talented as these folk but I still hear people whine that she “only writes break up songs”. Well, she writes about plenty of other things too but when she does write a song about being broken hearted at least it’s unique. Great reaction! ❤
@IvyCowboy
@IvyCowboy 8 ай бұрын
Ughhhh the way I identify with this. And literally *every* artist writes about heartbreak and love. Taylor loves love and she writes about it a lot. I'd love for them to name even one artist who doesn't write about breaking up.

This is one of my favorite songs by her, and one of my favorite performances too. The lyric, "I took the long way home...I asked the traffic lights if it'll be alright, they say, I don't know" is in my Top 10 Taylor Swift lyrics. How many times, when you have the weight of the world on you, and you're behind the wheel trying to process it out and clear your mind, do you focus hard on the traffic light at a stop, because you're so deep in thought, you don't want to zone out, miss it turning green, and pissing off the person behind you because you're not moving? This has been a frequent scenario for me from the time I started driving, so to hear her put it into words, in a poetic way that sounds normal instead of neurotic, is healing to me. I didn't know someone like her would understand a solo, unspoken moment like that, but it is comforting to know that you're not alone in those weight of the world moments.

This!! This line is underrated. Also the visualization (assuming you were already stopped at red) of the "I (🟢), don't (🟡), know (🔴), has always made think, like you said, of seeing all three lights go by, but you never moved because of being so lost in thought. Sounds simple, but it encapsulates the heavy moments.

true!! sometimes some songs don't connect with me first listen; then it hits, especially when going through something, why i love Folklore so much is that I was working in medical/hospitals during the pandemic. Yes this is what’s so great about her song writing, how she finds unique ways to say common things or relate fairly normal experiences. In the song champagne problems she has lyrics that go “Your Midas touch on the Chevy door November flush and your flannel cure” which is just such a sifferent way of saying he opened the car door for her, and gave her his jacket when she was cold in November. The song maroon is another really cool example of her writing imo.

Location: L'Olympia Theatre in Paris --- historic venue . They have a website. Wikipedia says:/The hall was opened in 1893 by one of the two co-creators of the Moulin Rouge venue, and saw many opera, ballet, and music hall performances / . Newly renovated a few years ago. Seats about 3000. She did this in the fall 2019, a few months before she was due to start her tour for Lover. When she cancelled the tour, she put an abbreviated concert film on Disney Plus in March of 2020; it was taken down the day she launched folklore, in July, so the chat between songs is mostly lost. During the concert, she sang older songs as well, but she couldn't include them in the distributed film ---- it was too soon for re-recording the music, so the film was just her new music. No idea why she took it down so soon! unless she just wanted to focus the public on folklore.

I enjoyed your reaction! 👍👍 I like how you commented on "I take the long way home I ask the traffic lights if it'll be all right They say, 'I don't know'", which are great lines. She paints the scenario so well with these lines. ...the 1st line is a metaphor ...the 2nd line is a continuation of the driving/walking metaphor, but the rhetorical question lets you know that whenever her thoughts can wander, the looming "goodbye" is on her mind ...the 3rd line is a response to the rhetorical question that emphasizes that the answer's either unknown, or she can't bear to process the inevitable answer. As you pointed out, the house metaphor is also top-notch. It's a bit ambiguous whether the 🏚️ (i.e., their relationship) is her home, so either she's taking the long way from the 🏚️ back to home, or she's taking the long way to go back to her 🏚️ that's still her home. Taylor is great at painting a vivid emotional picture that fits multiple situations. I agree with you video thumbnail's "the writing is wildly elite". This is from her "Lover" album, and this song was an experiment to see if she could write sad breakup songs while she was in love...and most obviously, she can. It's awesome that Taylor's genius doesn't depend on her personal tragedy.

Her use of metaphors, tropes, and allegories is in a class on its own. So many lines have double or triple meanings, or they mirror a widely known phrasing but cleverly changes out a word or three to be so poignant and genius that it gives me chills. I get my heart racing when I think about what lies ahead with the Tortured Poet album because it's very obvious the is going to be the most poetic she's ever been. And pretty sure she is using Emily Dickinson as a muse -- and that her PR team fed the bit about her being related to ED as an Easter egg. Because I believe some SwiftTokers have tied in the 4 bonus songs to poems of ED. Please tell me you are going to be reacting to that album when it's out. I actually am almost as excited for that as I am the album itself!!!

I get what you're saying, I think that many of her lyrics are like poetry that she writes and after she puts the arrangements to turn the poetry into a song. A few years ago, I made a video analyzing the poetry in My Tears Ricochet. Not all her songs are like that, but Death By A Thousand Cuts sounds like that to me. Clean is like that too and she talks about it as a metaphor. And in my opinion Sweet Nothing started as a poem, and she developed it later, and she mentions writing poems all the time in Sweet Nothing. I was so happy when the title of her new album confirmed that she also thinks about herself as a poet! 💜

Fun fact: Even though she’s been nominated multiple times, she’s actually never won Song of the Year at the Grammys.
