Elevating a pop star to some kind of messiah is a super disturbing level of crazy. Making everyone around you uncomfortable as you partake in the glory of your parasocial relationship is a few levels up from that. Making YOURSELF the star of that show, while you’re at the show, to see your messianic figure, is effing psychotic and narcissistic on a level that would scare away aliens visiting this planet. Swiftie concerts look and sound like a new kind of hell on Earth.

As someone who is not a Swiftie (I like a few of her songs) and is a Gen X/ Millennial, I find this whole Eras Tour/Taylor Swift obsession just so odd and incredibly unhealthy. I also don’t really get going to a concert with 96,000 people. I’d rather stay home and watch it on TV in my comfy clothes. Where I could actually hear the songs and have a good view of the artist. Especially, with how inconsiderate so many people are.

I think it's also because a lot of people were willing and ready to buy tickets, but since the demand was so high they couldn't check out. Ticketmaster was crashing so badly. Everytime we were in checkout it would kick us out and put us in queue behind over 10k people. It was absolutely brutal. I feel like the face value tickets weren't awfully expensive. It's on par with other celebs. The resell prices were disgustingly expensive and unethical.

I’m jealous that you had strict and fair ticket resale rules for your concerts. Taylor could’ve chosen that but instead went with dynamic pricing to get even richer even faster and then didn’t even prevent scalpers from getting richer faster. That was her choice. Foo fighters choose to not allow scalping on their upcoming tour so actual fans are able to buy directly. I like that.
@angela.m10 ай бұрын
I don't know the exact details but I heard that Taylor told Ticketmaster NOT to do dynamic pricing, but they did it anyway and that's why she called them out and began a feud with them. She also had a system in place that she planned for a while in which only "verified fans" would be able to get tickets in order to prevent scalpers, but once again, Ticketmaster didn't even take Taylor's system into account (I think fans were given a code or something and Ticketmaster was supposed to give them priority but Ticketmaster didn't even ask for the code when purchasing the tickets). Anyway, this is what I heard, I'm sure Swifties have the actual details.
@Arlene4HO10 ай бұрын
Taylor is out for getting richer and richer. Just look at how she releases albums and then release them again a couple of hours later, with additional songs, just so fans buy it twice. She is doing the same thing with the Eras concert movie, showing additional scenes on Disney that were not shown in the theater.

About the water, I know this is not a Taylor Swift thing but with the organisation of the venues. But honestly it’s infuriating. A girl passed away in line for her concert in Brasil because the security didn’t let anyone come in with water or anything liquid for security reasons and there was no water supplied to people waiting after that, and I don’t see it being talked about much. So it’s very infuriating that even after that, the situation in concerts has still not improved.

1. Creating demand: the merch is not online because they want to create exclusivity. You can't get the merch unless you go to her concert because then you are a REAL fan and you get exclusive items that can't be found online (unless they're resold). 2. To big to try: a lot of times, when people become bigger, they no longer try to be more unique in their craft or their merch because, especially with her, her fans will buy anything regardless how bad it is because of the fan loyalty. Her fans have a parasitic relationship with her that they will just buy anything, so quality is not something that matters now. 3. Accessibility: it's just bad event planning combined with maximizing profits to the point that basic needs are not met. They have no excuse to fail that badly, but they did. 4. Seats: profit, profit, profit. Squish as many people as possible and legally allowed to sell more tickets and make more cash. There's nothing else to it other than greed. 5. Outfits/Stress/Toxicity: at this point it's an attention seeking contest that fans compete in with each other to show off who is "the biggest fan." It stems from excessive obsession and competition. They don't do it for her, they do it to present themselves as superior to "average" fans who "don't understand" her music like "real fans" do. 6. Main characters: "this song saved my life," & "you just don't understand her," & "this is MY song." & "you are not a REAL fan." You paid to watch the artist, not to hear a banshee. It's frustrating because a lot of fans, regardless of the singer, are obnoxiously so wrapped around the idea that they are the only people in the room, they have no etiquette or regard for others.

As a brand consultant, I believe it's a brilliant strategy to sell merchandise exclusively to those who have purchased tickets. This approach enhances the 'limited edition' appeal of the products and generates buzz on social media about the tour. I anticipate that Taylor Swift will announce the merchandise online after the conclusion of her Eras Tour. Meanwhile, selling the merch at her ongoing tour locations is a savvy branding and marketing tactic.

I've been a fan since her debut album, but was never able to attend any of her previous concerts. I'm 25 now and going to the eras tour made me feel like I made up for all the concerts I've missed. I know it's not the same and I wish I was able to attend her other ones but I'm forever grateful for being able to attend the eras tour not once, but twice. Trends have always been there especially in the fashion industry but majority of the public just couldn't care less back in the day and trends usually didn't extend far beyond fashion mostly ? In comparison to our current times trends overtook our entire lives regardless of your country of origin because we're connected via internet and social media apps from stanley cups to adidas sambas to teslas ,sephora and now a Taylor concert it creates this false sense of scarcity and fomo fueling overconsumption of certain "trending" item , we're headed towards a very narrow-minded and unoriginal society I'm not sure how to feel about it.

I agree with a lot of this and my shows haven't even happened yet, but like you have been to the other tours. I actually blame TikTok/general social media narcissism for like 90% of this though..! - E.g. dressing up has actually always been a thing at Taylor concerts (including super obscure choices), but it used to just be amongst the super fans - now that people have to share it on TikTok, it's spread to everyone. It was also similar with Harry Styles (so not just Taylor fans). - Also with the screaming - again I'm so convinced it's either to post for attention on TikTok, or it's because they've seen it on TikTok and think that's how you show you're a true fan... - The TikTok hype also then obviously increases the whole FOMO vibe so it causes the over-subscription for tickets, water, merch etc and the quality has to drop by default. - Also agree that social media has changed concerts completely now. It's almost impossible to avoid spoilers which will always remove some of the magic. (sidenote: I'm in general admission standing for one of my shows and already DREADING having to be squished between people at 5'2, so you were lucky to at least have seating on the floor!)

I had the opportunity to go to one of her concerts near me. I would’ve been attending out of curiosity because I do agree that it’s going to to be considered a once in a lifetime cultural phenomenon. but ultimately I chose to avoid the crazy crowds, save 1200 bucks which is what it would’ve taken to get me to go for a good seat, and stay home in comfort that night. I only started liking her music with the folklore album. She was so prolific prior to that that I’m sure everyone likes at least a handful of her songs, even if they don’t realize they’re hers. And I was aware of and have appreciated the total creative control she has over her shows as an artist. I just hate going to stadiums, and I hate being in a screaming crowd - her current audience as you experienced first hand.

Speaking of controversial opinions… These things easily have potential to be traumatic especially combined. Exhaustion, standing in the hot sun for hours, inadequate access to food and water or toilets. Having your personal boundaries compromised due to overcrowding - and possibly fearing for your safety. There’s an in group/out group mentality around who’s a true fan and who’s just there for the hype. People were experiencing social pressure and even direct coercion about their dress. The social policing, people are afraid to share a negative or nuanced opinion and people have been filmed and publicly shamed for behaviour or opinions that aren’t mindless adoration. And yet people felt they couldn’t criticise those who were causing discomfort and arguably harm to those around them! Because it can be justified by excitement or love for the central figure of the group. And the emotional highs and lows caused by experiencing all this stress at an event that’s meant to be amazing and special followed up by people guilting you with “you should be grateful” if you complain. All of these are things I experienced repeatedly growing up in a cult, and more importantly they’re things that define that religious group as a cult and not just a religious group (look up the bite model of authoritarian control if you’re curious). Whether or not any of it’s intentional isn’t something I can comment on. But it’s definitely not okay and I’m sorry! Concerts should be fun!!!!

The example you gave where these fans recording other fans who were sitting down and told that they’re ungrateful and that somebody else could’ve taken their ticket. It’s like, what if they have a health condition and needed to rest? I’m really surprised that someone of her caliber even allows cell phones into her venues and allows for her shows to be recorded. There’s celebrities out there who forbid cell phones during performances so that their shows don’t get live-streamed on social media platforms.

You can get merch online. We bought and received before we attended. However in saying that the concert was great. Heafty price to pay for being like 10m away from her.. heard there were a family flying in spending close to 3 thousand for the same tickets we got and there were 5 of em then fly from perth over to melbourne for the concert. Love her music and amazing how he is able to engage such a broad age group. But I have to say, she seemed like she was in a rush to get in and to get out. Like she didn't really wanted to be there. Really detached from the fans, maybe because the crowd was so big (melb last day Sunday of eras tour). In the vip package you get a tote bag. But strategically they put the tshirts online for sale knowing people would fork out money to buy the tshirts. Another money roller for the team... can we say she's calculating or do we say she's strategic in many of the moves she has made. Good on her for it though. Fans are fans. She'll keep capitalizing on it because everyone is so crazy over her as she is * so relatable* coming out of covid..gota really take a step back and analyze whether you are or not going to go nuts over the top. Completely agree, I lost all respect for her when she started to endorse a credit card leading up to the Eras Tour. She knew the ticket demand and surge pricing would be insane.

Before the internet….. If you didn’t go you didn’t get. Unless your cool sister scored you one. They didn’t really sell band shirts in stores. So seeing younger people with “official” concert t’s. It’s lame and totally bogus . When I see someone with a shirt on for a show that I went to in 1982? My head explodes it’s not a real concert T. Part of it was identifying with your tribe. Somebody saw you wearing a David Bowie serious moonlight tour T-shirt. They know you went to that concert. They’d say hey man how was that show? Now you can just get a remake of one anywhere. Clash combat rock you can get that. but it’s not real. And everybody will know you did not go to that show. Because you aren’t old enough to have gone. It was just a thing, you know? Also, everyone is always quite scandalized when I don’t stand in the mile long line for the ladies at intermission at the ballet. F that. I’m not gonna stand at the end of that line needing to pee while an empty bathroom. Sits there literally empty. Oh yes, the ladies were all quite scandalized. The first time I did it. I remember then a few of them drifted in behind me lol.

This is a side note but I actually collect vintage band tour shirts. I’m 35 and have sunk thousands into them 😂 my favorites are my 1979 Fleetwood Mac tour shirt and my Misfits shirt from 1991 the Bloof Wolf tour I believe it was called. I just smoked and I’m too lazy to look right now. Nice to see someone else who understands the power of vintage shirts. They were so much harder to acquire back then which makes them so much more rare today! I also have an 80s The Cars tour shirt as well, I just remembered that. 😂

Don’t forget plus sizes with the merch. I’d love to hear you talk more about your type 1 diabetes when you’re in public spaces. I’m diabetic and epileptic. People judge me so much for carrying a backpack because I need to have snacks, water, medications, and to be hands free since I fall so much. A concert is my worst nightmare for during a seziure. I no longer attend football games, concerts, or large gatherings that require a clear bags or restrict what I can have with me that could cause serious challenges for me medically

Here’s my unpopular opinion Taylor Swift isn’t more famous than she’s ever been. She just hasn’t toured for five years so lots of people want to go see her.
@anjalianthony165610 ай бұрын
I am definitely not a swiftie (never been to her concerts and never will) but i think its great to see a female artist become so successful. I suspect many of her fans are young and perhaps did not get to see previous tours so do not have a comparison and for them the Eras tour was the best thing ever! But i personally don’t actually think large sports stadiums like the MCG are suitable for concerts (other than rock bands). Sound quality isn’t as good as smaller venues and it’s always mayhem having such a big crowd!
@CaitlinPawlowski10 ай бұрын
Absolutely agree!

I hope she finishes off her remakes of her albums right after the tour and then goes off into the sunset and smells the roses. Let people forget about her for a while, take five years off or even retire. Hopefully the sick obsession will stop.

It's funny. I've never been to a concert. I have anxiety, and I am so scared of people thinking that someone else would enjoy my seat more than me. To the extent that I have never gone. I once saw a band that was in a bar, that was fun. But I'm not a concert person and I don't understand, it doesn't even sound pleasant to go

Can you imagine the costs for them to post the items?! That’s why they give people the double work to get if they want! 😅 but that’s all crazy who cares about having a item from a stranger that majority of times we admire and they are crap people to start with! I booked Taylor Swift for 3 of us my daughter she’s 9 and loves her and my husband also likes her songs, we’ve never been before, paid almost 800£ per ticket vip box in Wembley in summer 2024! For me it’s a waste of money’ went to see last year and this year in Dubai Ed Sheeran and was amazing & worth money! I’ve booked Munique for Adele and hope to love it as I wanted LA tour but has been sold out so long!

I have never listened to Taylor Swift. This Eras tour was hard to avoid - and I didn’t get it. What’s the big deal? What’s the era thing? Is this tour never ending? lol - but I watched a KZbin video recently that was hours of explaining the eras and the whole fandom etc and I thought it was so cool and creative. And I actually felt kind of sad that I missed out on it. I am the same age as her and it would have been fun to grow up with all that too. I see how people are “Swifties”. I totally would have gone and had tons of fun despite knowing nothing. And guess what? I would have ended it having a ball and then went home and listened to her music and what’s wrong with that?
@kellypickle10 ай бұрын
Toxic My granddaughter loves her, and I would never ever spend money on this ever. It’s about integrity, and there is none here so many artists have fought for their fans to get a fair shake and have a fair chance at getting a good ticket for a decent price, but the odds are against them for sure. I was going to go see Tedeschi trucks band (MGM Boston) And as badly as I wanted to go, I could not justify the ticket price. It was just ridiculous for two of us to go. It would’ve been $700. I’m disabled and can’t be in the floor area. It’s sad. So much greed.

Not sure how net worth is calculated in full detail, but Taylor could have spent less on the merch & VIP boxes to pocket it or use it for costumes or use it to pay for fuel on her private jet she's always polluting with! LOL I'm not a fan of hers and can't see that I ever will be, so I can't understand the obsession you guys have with her (and that public shaming/complaining? Ooof!). What's her appeal that's made her so big to charge $1,300 for a floor ticket? I can see your point on it being a "historical moment" in entertainment, but so was Beyonce's, which is also where I think her team got the idea of dressing up from. LOL But who knows? Also being in an semi-enclosed space with 96,000 people sounds terrifying!

MCG is a world class stadium they do those crowd numbers all the time but it is a sport stadium and the fact that the crowd for this event was mostly female is not standard so that would account for the toilet issue. I would say a lot of the issues come from the event organisation not the venue. As a Melb local we were all over the Swiftie roadshow by the time they road out of town bless those Swfties but adios lol💕 my opinion only x

I will be honest, I like her songs. But in general, I do not like concerts anyway. I find that they are too crowded and you might not even be able to see the stage anyway. Good seats are even more expensive. And price is another reason. I would never pay hundreds of euros to listen to songs I can listen for free online. I would rather save that money or go on a nice holiday with it.

I'm a swiftie who couldn't go as my due date was around the Sydney tour dates. I was at home with a newborn during her Aus tour. I ended up getting a merch t shirt online and my husband surprised me with merch by lining up at the stadium for me. It was actually easier to just get it through the official online merch store. I also agree with you regarding the outfits, the pressure seems ridiculous. It all seems so wasteful to have all these one time use outfits. I went to her 1989 and Reputation tours and had the time of my life. They were truly magical. The fandom in my opinion has become a lot more toxic. You can be a fan but the obsession is ridiculous.
@CaitlinPawlowski10 ай бұрын
When and why do you think the weird toxic obsession started? I think when 1989 and rep toured fans aka you and I were normal level headed people 😂
@Rpa-4810 ай бұрын
@@CaitlinPawlowski I think the toxicity is due to social media. During 1989 Tiktok and reels didn't exist. During reputation tour, it was the infancy of tiktok. Prior to tiktok, a lot of the Easter egg clues she left in songs were only followed by dedicated fans. All these people then started these accounts on tiktok just with Taylor updates and decoding the mystique of her Easter eggs, etc. You really see it from Lover, and it accelerates during the pandemic albums. So it just started spiralling from there. All the boomers in media started reporting on this phenomenon and suddenly normies who never cared for her music in the past joined the bandwagon to see what the fuss was about. This is not to gatekeep, anyone can listen to music. But I think a lot of people are just joining in not due to a love of the music but to stay relevant. I've seen it with a few work colleagues. A lot of the really young kids I think are wanting to go to the concerts due to social media/peer pressure. It's actually just getting a bit much for me as a long term fan. I'm being lumped in with all the crazies.
