Hey Popat50! I’m in my 50s too and JUST started listening to her music during pandemic. I can now say with confidence that she is the best lyricist today. The imagery is fantastic, you can picture every scene and you can feel the emotion. She wrote this 11 years ago when she was 21. Her last two albums, written entirely during pandemic, are not mainstream pop albums, which is what got me listening. You may enjoy them even if you don’t want them for your pop channel exploring pop music on the charts. But you may appreciate her lyricism on those two albums. Some are essentially poems she put to music (Happiness, Ivy, Coney Island, this is my Trying, peace, the lakes); some are great stories (last great American dynasty, Tis the Damn season, no body no crime); some about her grandparents (Marjorie, epiphany); some are just lovely ballads (evermore, champagne problems, tolerate it). Few things I’ve learned in the past few months learning about her music that has impressed me, as a professor and educator, was that she has albums in 3 different genres country (4), pop (3), and indie/folk (2). Very difficult to do successfully. She was an award winning poet at age 11, novelist by age 13, and hired songwriter for Sony Music at age 14, and a record deal followed that year. Those credentials made it clear to me that she was not like the other kids, and deserved for me to take a closer look at the evolution of her music. She wrote 2 poems to accompany her 6th album and English teachers use these two poems to teach their students in the classroom about poetry, literary devices used in poetry. I would not be surprised if she is writing poetry or novellas under an alias, she’s used an alias before to write songs for other artists. Sorry for the long winded comment. I’ve surprised myself at my age being remotely interested in music from a 32 yr old. But I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Evermore, folklore, then Red Taylor’s Version, then Fearless Taylor’s Version. Thats an evolution from age 32 back to age 18.

The lyric that “I was never good at telling jokes but the punchline goes Ill get older and your lovers stay my age” is about the guy dating young girls. When Taylor and Jake Gyllenhaal dated she was 20 and he was 31 ish and now he is 41 and dating a 25 year old. And Taylor Swift is 32 now.

she is one of THE BEST songwriters alive right now, no kidding, listen to more of her stuff and you'll agree. It's so.... healthy and painful? Also look for Great Gatsby references. Most of Folklore and Evermore aren't written from Taylor's perspective. On Folklore there's a trio of songs - Cardigan, August and Betty - that are written from each perspective of a love triangle. The way she tells.stories is like, Carole King/Billy Joel level good. It’s quite refreshing seeing an older person reacting to Taylor Swift! She’s a brilliant lyricist, and it makes sense to someone older than 25 (the age of most people who react to this song) to feel and connect with such lyrics! Great video. By the way, if my grammar looks like it was written by a 6 year old (which is highly possible), my apologies, I’m a 14 year old (Literally, I was 13 a month ago), born and raised in Mexico, in a public school, which means= not learning the verb to be until 8th grade, which is the grade I’m in. Doing my best learning this language! That’s why I love Taylor’s songs even more, I learned LOTS of new words with her discography (ex. ‘Maim’, there’s not a word in Spanish that translates exactly to maim…).I accept criticism.

This song originally came out 10 years ago and I was 18 years old, had just had my heart broken for the first time and would cry during this song while driving every day and I’ll never forget the heartbreaking feeling I felt each time those lyrics hit. Anyone who’s ever been heartbroken will feel that hurt. I still can’t sing the entire song back when listening in the car without crying at some of the phrases. The ones that always choke me up are the “casually cruel in the name of being honest”, and “I’d like to be my old self again, but I’m still trying to find it”❤

Glad you heard this song. Most of her songs are like this one, even in her "pop" albums she has good lyrics but usually the songs that go to the radio are the more repeatitive ones. My best guess is that most people listen to those because they're catchy and happy and easy? I feel like a lot of people just want happy and easy things these days, I don't know :/ It's a shame because her music is so much better than what you hear on the radio. This one was an exception, we, the fans have been waiting for the full version of this song for so many years, nearly a decade.
@PopAt502 жыл бұрын
ah, but that's the very definition of pop isnt it? catchy, happy, and easy. there's nothing wrong with that, which is why im here. deep cuts can be as deep as the artist wants and that's completely valid as well! it's not really a matter of "these days"-the pop of the 50s was the nascent rock'n'roll, and catchy and happy and easy was how it's been since!

I've been a huge music fan since the 1960s. I always thought Love Story was an amazing pop song, but for some reason I never seriously gave Taylor a listen. I started paying a little bit attention when 1989 was release when I heard it was a complete crossover from country, but again, I didn't pay too much attention. When Lover was released, I actually listened to the album a couple of times, and added two songs to my playlist. But then I moved on. But when Folklore was release during the pandemic, I became obsessed. At 59, after decades of Pink Floyd's The Wall being my favorite all-time album, Folklore jumped to #1 for me. After decades of my favorite all-time band bouncing from U2 to The Jezabels (popular in Australia, virtually unknown in the US), and after diving into her catalogue and almost every single thing I could read or watch about her, she became my all-time favorite artist, with anyone else now a distant 2nd. And All To Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version) is also my favorite all-time song. I can't stress enough how much of an impact she has had on me. 3 days before my 60th, I started writing music for the first time in my life, and have since released two of my own albums and an EP. I'm a dedicated Swiftie for life. Like many others here have said, you must listen to Folklore and Evermore. You should listen to everything since her debut. She can do *any* genre of music. And she's the best songwriter I've ever heard. And if you watch her Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, not to mention all of her interviews and live shows, you'll see what a remarkable person she is as well. I've gushed enough. Go listen and watch.

Her Red, folklore and evermore albums are probably the most poetic of her albums and have the best story-telling. I saw her live in 2010, for her Fearless tour. She has always been big-her debut album single Tim Mcgraw was on country stations from the get-go. but seeing her now, her name everywhere you look? @@PopAt50 It was promotional single for Red (Taylor's Version) and she combined both music slots on SNL into one slot, it's on KZbin. Notwithstanding it being a promotional single it still got to #1 and ousted Don MacLean to be the longest #1 (by time). The song is actually longer as there are longer instrumental bridges and there is a 4-5 minute verbal exchange between the actors. btw I'm 64 (from the UK) and was "brought up" on all the classic 70's rock/prog acts. The list would be too long. It carried on imo into the 80's but 90's, 00's saw rock music wane. Soulmate means to have two souls who connect, but Twin Flames are the same soul in two pieces, in two bodies. It's a deeper level of connection, although the 'flame' part is the important bit. Many Twin Flames meet, have a deep love and split up again because having the half of the same soul forces a person to confront their own flaws head on. In folklore, the soul will continue it's cycle over many lifetimes until a couple finally breaks the cycle by remaining together or completing their divine task.

I can see that everyone in the comments already recommended folklore and evermore, and yes - those albuns have some of the best lyrics I’ve heard in music! You could do a reaction to cardigan (folklore’s lead single), I think you’ll get the fell of the whole project :)

The fade out was intentional -- as if its remembering and also slowly leaving it behind as time goes on.. one of the best songs ever written!!

Great video! 'All too well' makes you feel and remember memories/moments. You should definitely react to 'Exile' from Taylor Swift's folklore album.

I'm 33 (a few months older than Taylor Swift), I grew up with her music and her music has matured just as she had. Some of her songs are super poppy and some are more like this one. Her biggest talent is story telling. Also I want to say that I mainly listen to rock with some metal but Taylor's music is up there for me along with my other favorites like Queen, Nirvana, John Lennon, etc. PS: Thanks to my oldest brother I own all of Debbie's music, love the 80's pop. Taylor has an album called 1989 that's inspired by 80's pop that's full of jams.

we're very much alike despite the age then1 thanks for coming by! Debbie's really great right? She's starting a tour this year!

Despite this song making me a Swiftie, her record company has disputed my right to make and monetize this video-so despite it being my most popular one yet, i can't make any money from it. So if you want to support me, Please view at least one other video!

Yeah when you got 3 minutes in and you were like, oh that's starting to hurt, I was like oh just you wait. The originally released version of this was much shorter she released the longer version when she recorded all her music this past year so a lot of it got sort of edited out and then put into other songs... Like the part about her not being good at telling jokes is also in another song, Begin again, I think and the birthday story is also another song but I can't remember which one right now. Ummm... So what you were feeling about it just going on and on is because the song is basically a stream of consciousness that needed to be edited. Yeah, Swifty's know this song hurts.

it's one of the hurtiest songs ive heard.

"Glad she is back to poppy repeating, as I am not sure I can handle any more of these evocative lyrics.: T: "And I was never good at telling jokes but the punchline goes "I'll get older but your lovers stay my age." Ooops! Anyway, this was fun to watch, as a 50+ guy myself that really only started to really pay attention to her music after this song, good to see another in my age bracket reacting the same way.

@@PopAt50 oh then in folklore i really recommended cardigan, seven (my favourite), exile (definitely a masterpiece and one of her best collabs), the lakes, my tears ricochet, august. In evermore there are honestly so many perfect songs but champagne problems, coney island, Ivy, tolerate it, marjorie and right where you left me are pure poetry. That album is a masterpiece. Her best work yet according to me (and i have an English literature degree lol idk if that adds anything but she's definitely my favourite poet)

Lol okay I came here to make sure the other swiftness got here first to let you know that because you enjoyed her lyricism and imagery so much to be sure to check out folklore and evermore, her two collections of short stories in album form. Also I’m not sure if anyone has told you this, but there are visuals for this song, but it isn’t called an official music video it’s called All Too Well the short film, and it is on her channel. It apparently closely reflects the real situation that inspired the song.
