She should take more control of her single releases tbh. Why would anyone check out an album if they hate the single? You don't hear a song you hate and go 'oh wow I need to listen to this album!' I feel the same way about Cardigan being the first single off this. It's one of the weakest tracks on the album (along with Betty). Just because you heard me! with lyrics like "hey kids, spelling is fun" a line where Taylor did not even write, (Brendon Urie wrote that whole bridge), does not make one record childish and immature. You said that you were not used to Taylor songs where the production was so minimal, but she has a lot of those type of songs. Her singles are usually very misleading in that sense. Her best songs for me are "hidden" and not the ones that she puts out before the release of the full album, generally speaking. For instance, I would not include "Shake It Off" in my top-5 from 1989 even though I consider it a great tune. I enjoyed your reaction a lot and I am so happy that you actually liked it. Some slow songs from Taylor that I personally love: This Love, Clean, State of Grace, Lover, Cornelia Street, New Year's Day, All Too Well. And there are more. I feel a bit frustrated whenever I hear someone say that she's finally come through and exceeded their expectations. Her songwriting has always been this brilliant ever since she came out with her first album. But people couldn't see past her persona created around her personal life. Listen to blank space. An example of her genius lyricism to write a character that was drawn from the image portrayed by the media. Even though it was a pop song, the lyrics still delivered a masterful play on words. But people either miss the point or intentionally dismiss it because they can't stand her and hate her guts for petty reasons. So yeah...let her music speak for itself, keep an open mind, have a big heart and just enjoy the music.

Just subtle little passes in a hall or first interactions that i didn't realize at the time but now give me certainty we were made for each other. To me when i first heard invisible string i found myself in complete understanding of the story it was telling, it was basically my story. Its not sombre and haunting like the other tracks yes i can agree to that, but it brings a reminder to me that through all the hardship and heartbreak, invisible strings will bring you to the light at the end of a dark tunnel. She is an incredibly genius songwriter. My tears ricochet is actually about her old record label selling her masters and leaving the label and how betrayed she felt after being there 15 years and Scott Borchetta being like a second father to her. “Stolen lullabies” “crossing out the good years” “cursin my name, wishing I stayed.” I think a lot of songs on this album are about that pain. I believe the 1 and hoax are also about Scott and I think mad woman is partially scooter Braun but also obviously Kim and Kanye from “women like hunting witches too, doing your dirtiest work for you/it’s obvious that wanting me dead has really brought you two together” also betty, cardigan, and august are a love triangle from each person’s perspective with cardigan being betty’s perspective years later, reflecting on young love and how that person stays frozen in your mind at the age you met them, betty is James’s point of view coming back saying “would you believe me if I told you it was just a summer thing?” And august is the other girls point of view BUT it’s also theorized to be a love triangle between her, the fans, and Scott Borchetta with cardigan being a love letter to the fans “when I felt like an old cardigan under someone’s bed, YOU (the fans) put me on and Said I was your favorite (musician), august being about her music (you were never mine to lose) and Betty being what she wishes Scott would say to her to make it better. She is INCREDIBLE. The deep cuts are always hidden in the albums. Most singles do not accurately represent the genius that is hidden in a TS album. If you like the slower, sad, vulnerable type of lyrics, you should def check out Red ❤️

Cardigan, August, and Betty are connected and written by the perspectives of different characters. The three characters are Betty, James and a girl James cheats on Betty with (Inez). - Cardigan: Betty’s perspective - August: Inez’s perspective - Betty: James’ perspective Cardigan is split into three parts: Before, during, and after the breakup with James In August, Inez has a summer fling with James but even while he’s spending time with her, he’s still thinking about Betty. But Inez believes that what her and James had was real. In the song “Betty”, James comes back to Betty. Betty mentions towards the end of Cardigan that she knew he’ll come back to her. Also the names of these characters, James, and Inez are names of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ children. They are very close friends with Taylor, so Betty is speculated to be the name of their third child.

She confirmed that there is a love triangle story that overarch between three songs. Each song tells the story from the perspective of each party involved from different times of their lives. Yes, I love watching non-fan reactions to this album! The thing is, if you listen to her previous records, you'll see that the songrwriting has always been there, but I don't know why, she always pick arguably the worst songs on the albums as their lead single (ME!, Shake it Off, etc). If you're interested in a similar record from her, listen to Red. It's much poppier, but the lyrics are great.

And Red has one of the best slow songs Taylor has ever produced, which is "All Too Well". As I wrote in my comment, Taylor with her singles can give the impression that she does basic, pop music when that's not exactly true, at least for me

Yes and no. I am a big fan myself, and I absolutely agree with everyone who says that she always made songs with beautiful lyric (storytelling), and they were never cookie-cutter or simple. But this is her most magical record, as far as the complexity of the melodies and lyrics too. The type of drums on this album, the cello, the violin - this is a new sound for her. It is not the same as her innocent and bubbly country records. Definitely not the same as RED - RED was brilliant, but still a different style. I think what's different about this album and maybe why some people say it's more "mature," is that other albums are overflowing with lots of young energy, and this one is seemingly quiet and calm, but it invokes emotions from deep down.

I think This Love from her album 1989 is the song from her other albums that would fit into this album the best, it has the same laid back but emotional vibes. There's a few others that are in a similar vein too like Begin Again and Sad Beautiful Tragic from Red and Safe & Sound from the Hunger Games soundtrack. This is her only album that doesn't really have any fast paced songs though, he other albums all have at least 4-5.

I was definitely not expecting this today from you! Lol this album is very complex, it tells a story from different point of views of a love triangle. Some people say it’s the story of Rebekah who was mentioned on the third song (Taylor bought her Rhode Island house from her a couple years back). She made up a story of these lives and wrote an album, that’s why she called it folklore. She started writing this album late April of this year. I feel like you would truly enjoy her other albums, she’s always been such a strong song writer, her singles definitely NEVER represent the album lyrically (and sometimes even sonically). I've been waiting for this kind of album from her since 2012 - her track Safe and Sound with the Civil Wars and her album Red both told me she had this in her, both sonically and lyrically. I love all of her albums (and every album has standout tracks that were never singles) but I think unless you listen to her deep cuts, it would have been hard to predict this album. That's where the strength of her storytelling and lyricism really lies, and it's been there since herr first album, but she really took it all to the next level with this project. As to production, she's been co-producing for a while now, and I think I read that this time she was the executive producer. And she writes the treatments for all her videos, and now she directs them too. Very few artists work to improve like she does.

This entire album is not about her personal life and breakups, instead the songwriting is more fictional and story based. She creates vivid character arcs for example: a ghost at her own wake and seeing herself being surrounded by her enemies; a woman who is shunned by her entire town; a teenage love triangle and why it’s so hard to get over teenage romance; a boy who is growing up to accept himself. The album showcases her songwriting and storytelling, how she has the ability to create characters and tell stories from their perspectives. This is a sign of a mature artist and this genre overall really suits her.
