@@Mimihigh Personally even if you feel that way about the other songs Epiphany and Peace really hit hard for me. The former equating the medical professionals fighting Covid-19 to soldiers in WW2, expressing the helplessness and how nothing could've prepared them for it. Then Peace is one of the most beautiful songs she's ever written imo, cus that's such a deep question to me. She's scared that no matter how deeply they love each other, that the cloud which always hangs over her will still ultimately drive him away. It sounds obvious that 2 ppl in love would remain together, but commiting urself to never having peace is a lot harder than you'd think. Imo go back to those 2 even if u keep ur opinions about the other ones

I didn't realized just how tragic August was until I heard Betty. Like damn my girl painted this summer fling like it was her favorite memory, she was canceling plans and saying anything was enough for her. But u hear Jame's trifling ass in Betty referring to her as "figment of my worst intentions" and referring to a summer fling she cherishes as "the worst thing I ever did" and then also admits that even while he slept next to her he was imaging Betty "I dreamt of you all summer long" . Dudeeeee, this messy asf 😭.

@@mayanknegi9167 I agree! Betty' story is a wistful type of sad, in the sense she's mourning what could've been had they not been so impulsive. But the girl from August is the kinda sad you physically feel in your chest, bc it's a complete self-abandon for the sake of simply being wanted back.
@reyque
@reyque 4 жыл бұрын
as a person who is currently in the position of the august girl, let me tell you that this song just hits hard because you know that he doesn’t love you, you know his heart belongs to someone else but you can never say no to him because he’s all you’ve wanted. You love him more than you can bear and you know its wrong and you know youre going to end up hurt but you’d do it because you need him. the part where she says ‘cancel all my plans in case you’d call’ is so real because now my whole schedule revolves around him whereas I’m an afterthought in his day. Its real, the pain with which Taylor sings that ‘you weren’t mine to lose’.

"She's going to reach levels y'all never thought she would..." This really, really gives me chills. Because it's not a euphemism or an exaggeration or fake praise, it's literal, verifiable fact. She's breaking record after record at this stage in her career. She's beating the odds, come waves, storms, or tsunamis-- both, personally and professionally. There are BRILLIANT singer/songwriters just like Taylor, but not one of them has this kind of widespread connect-- it's fucking magical. This is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of artist, and we are so damn lucky to witness her mastery, y'all.

STORY ABOUT INVISIBLE STRING! this is about taylor writing about how all along before her and Joe met, there was ‘an invisible string’ that tied them together and so many things happened coincidentally. for instance, the first song Joe heard when he went to the U.S (LA specifically) for the first time, was Bad Blood on the radio. LYRIC -> “Bad was the blood of the song in the cab on your first trip to LA”. another one was that Joe ate at Taylors favourite spot for diner before they even met - they then even ended up going there for their three year anniversary. LYRIC -> “You ate at my favourite spot for dinner. bold was the waitress on our three-year trip getting lunch down by the lakes. she said i looked like an american singer!”. hope that helps! :)
@Daaaanielle
@Daaaanielle 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think the dinner and the waitress happen in LA. The dinner did. 100% maybe in his first trip as well? But I feel like the waitress thing was in the UK because no one in the us is going to say “oh you look American” probably up north too. They hella friendly 🤣.

i don’t think Invisible String is fictional. There are so many mentions to her and Joe’s relationship. like Centennial Park which is in Nashville where Taylor essentially grew up. Or “right into that dive bar” In her song Delicate a big part of it is Taylor meeting Joe in a dive bar. Then we have “Bad was the blood of the song in the cab on your first trip to LA” which i think is a mention of her song “Bad Blood”. Then of course we have the mention of the waitress who thought taylor was an “american singer”. Lastly, they mention eating “lunch on their 3 year trip getting lunch down by the lakes” and taylor hasn’t released the bonus track yet but it’s called “the lakes”. I really liked this revisit thought, this whole album makes you think.

1. The Love Triangle: It consists of Cardigan (Betty's Perspective), August (The Mistress's Perspective) and Betty (James Perspective). 2. Illicit Affairs: This one is a stand alone, I think. It doesn't tie up with the teen love triangle because to me it sounds written from an adult's perspective. 3. Invisible String: This is definitely about Joe and from her personal experience unlike the love triangle or illicit affairs. She talks about how it was a string of coincidences that brought them together. For instance how Bad Blood was the song playing in the taxi when he first came to L.A ("Bad was the blood of the song in the backseat of thr car"). 4. This is my trying: This again feels like a very personal song which is written from her own perspective, I think. It sounds a bit similar to afterglow as she admits her faults in a relationship and asks if she can be forgiven and loved dispite them all. It also talks about her anxieties about the spotlight and how she feels like wanting to disappear from the critique of the public something like what happened in her song "the lucky one". P.S: For her sake, I really wish she disappears from the spotlight after having made exactly 13 albums. 5. The Last Great American Dynasty: It is about the last owner of her Rhode Island house. Nothing too complicated here. 5. Peace: It is again about her own life and relationships because the high publicisation of her relationships doesn't allow her loves to have 'peace'. For instance, Jake Gyllenhaal allegedly broke up with her because of the media. 6. Epiphany: That one is slightly disconnected with the rest of the narrative because this one is more so about the current situation of the world than old stories or personal experience or anything like that. Thus, it's about something entirely different. The first verse also talks about her grandfather during the ww2. 7. Hoax, My tears ricochet and Mad woman: Are again I think from her own life and perspective and talk about her loosing her albums and her reputation among other things. 8. Mirrorball: This one seems to be for Joe too. It talks about how she reninvents herself over and over and how she tries to fit in and about her love for him. Or more so about her fans and her career. 9. Seven (probably my favourite): Is about a childhood friend of hers who had a troubled life and how she looked at it when she was young herself. It perfectly captures the innocence of a child when in a situation like that for instance "I've been meaning to tell you, I think your house is haunted". That line captures the innocence of young Taylor and the serious situation pretty well. 10. Exile: This one is story on its own. Love the conversational feel. 11. The One: I don't think it ties in with any other song although it could go along with Cardigan since both of them reminisce an old relationship which was good and could've lasted if not for some incidents or things. It might even be from her personal experience.

Actually, Epiphany is about her grandfather Dean who was in military. And I think mirrorball is about her carrer after 2016 (I know they said the end is near, but I'm still on my tallest tiptoes..). The bridge is about her constantly re-inventing herself to please people (All i do is try, try and try, I'll do anything to keep you looking at me).

Awesome analysis! I understand what you mean by Illicit Affair having a more adult feel compared to August. The only line that makes me question whether its part of the love triangle is "what started in beautiful rooms ends with meetings in parking lots." But the lyrics also include "a drug that only worked the first few hundred times" and if it was only a summer thing, a few hundred times might not be plausible 🤔

@@cheska2803 that is definitely an interesting thought but exile to me sounds much more mature and 'adult' as well. Cause to me it somehow sounds like a couple which has moved in together (dare I say married) and the guy doesn't show any affection towards the girl so she looks for it in another places and it sounds like a conversation which would happen when that guy returns home to see his girl with another guy. I don't know why but that's the image I get in my head.

Epiphany is actually a very deep song. I know you won't read this, but the song is about PTSD after a war. The PTSD you get after seeing thousands of people dying in front of your eyes and not being able to do anything about it. It makes you numb, and only when you finally go to sleep when it hits you, you try to make sense of what you've seen. This can also be related to the doctors and nurses seeing massive death tolls coz of Covid-19 and are numb inside, but can't do anything about it. This song ALWAYS brings me to tears without fail. Give it a listen coz it's about Death.

Cardigan: Bettys reaction to the affair, she doesn’t react well. Illicit affairs: the mistress is recounting the affair from her pony of view. ‘Make sure nobody sees you leave’ ‘What started in beautiful rooms’ ‘So you leave no trace behind’ Exile: Betty And James singing to one another. It seems at this point they’ve graduated High school. ‘I’m not your problem anymore’ ‘We always walked a very thin line’ ‘I think I’ve seen this film before and I didn’t like the ending.’ The 1: Betty and told herself she is over James and is trying. JAMES ARCH This is me trying: James has been desperately trying to make things right with Betty. But it’s not working. Peace: James realises the only way he can give Betty peace is that he leaves town, so he joins the army. ‘Our coming of age has come and gone. Suddenly the summer is clear’ Coming of age is a young person's transition from being a child to being an adult. It continues through the teenage years of life ‘But I would die for you in secret’ ‘Sit with you in the trenches’ Epiphany: James dies in battle My tears ricochet: James’ funeral Hoax: Betty goes crazy after after not being able to process James death. AFTER MATH Mad Woman: Betty leaves town and moves to Rhode Island. Just look at how bad Ed Sheeran's divide, Bieber's changes, Change The Rapper's best day, logic, etc. Folklore relieves me that Tay can still makes something so heartbreaking, deep, poetic, and beautiful yet be happy in life. Illicit affairs. Give it another listen. Listen to the beginning, how she, the side chick, is talking about it as if its fine with her, she is good with it. The, progressively, as she is talking about it, she is getting more upset and realizing that this is toxic and is actually hurting her. So, the beginning is soft, the end is harsh, don't call me kid, do'n't call me baby, look at this idiotic mess that you made me..... she is angry at this point. She realizes what this man and this affair has done to her. It has belittled her, something throughout the song she realizes. I love the end , when she realizes that she is in love and this guy is only using and taking from her. I love change in this track. The end is anger, the beginning of softness and love. I love this dynamic. Give this song another chance, I think its dynamic and the end she is really pouring her heart out realizing she is destroyed by this trifling MF. loved it.

“my tears ricochet” is about Scott Borchetta and Big Machine Records. “I loved you til my dying day” refers to when Taylor “died” in the reputation era, which was her last album working with BMR. Also, lyrics like “stolen lullabies” and “I can go anywhere I want just not home” make a lot of sense with this theory. HER POWER. I knew she had to write a song about this whole mess, and it paid off. Edit: I love that this song can be interpreted in different ways. It’s what makes music fun. To add to the theory, this song was the first one that she wrote from this album, and it is also TRACK FIVE, which, if you’re a swiftie, you know it’s a very emotional and personal song. It was the perfect way to express the pain she had when her masters were sold to Sc**ter.

This entire album was mostly done in one take which means most songs you hear are the only recording she did. Secondly she recorded all her vocals in her home studios and the vocals are not altered only layered. If that is not enough proof that she can sing then idk what is besides her live vocals.
@lipstickytoffee
@lipstickytoffee 4 жыл бұрын
That's not necessarily what one take means, it could just mean that she didn't punch any vocals. It wouldn't really matter how many 'takes' of the song she did, just means that the vocals we hear are from one recording straight from start to finish.

is that just me that sees the writing of mirrorball coming from taylor's place as an artist, specially as a songwriter/ singer/ musician? because they take the responsibility for themselves of not just entertain us, but make us relate to their work (what taylor does exceptionally well), that's why the reference to the disco ball and many lines like "I'll show you every version of yourself tonight" and "I can change everything about me to fit in". this last one matches so much with her recent speeches about her career and how she always tried to make what people wanted her to do, that she showed us perfectly in miss americana documentary. the chorus "hush, when no one is around, my dear you'll find me on my tallest tip toes spinning on my highest heels, love shining just for you" talks about how we bring their work so much in our lives, even in our most intimate moments - and again how they make everything to amuse us. the fragility of their spot in the mainstream and the insane expositions by midia, and eventually what this could cause is described in the verse "and when I break, it's in a million pieces" shouting out to her own "cancellation" in 2016. the lines "you are not like the regular / the masquerade revelers / drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten" talk directly to her fans, in that incident and after, that even in despite of the common sense continued by her side. taylor oftenly said the last years how difficult is to be an woman in music industry and I guess the line "I know they said the end is near" refers to her time of making success, that is dated by the many speculators, but, she always reinvents herself to keep her spot, always suprising everyone with her choices and movements. I personally get my mind blown of how professional and passionate she is. finally, in the bridge, she takes a even more personal POV, talking about her attempts of getting our attention, and her struggle with being natural when all she knows is being an entertainer. idk, but the line "and they call off the circus, burned the disco down" reminds me sooo much of katy perry's recent carrer. that fits so well in this context, and I would not be surprised if this reference is real. in "I'm still on that trapeze / I'm still trying everything to keep you looking at me", the word trapeze is well chosen in a way that sounds like she's saying "trap beats", referring to reputation album and all what it represents for taylor's career, and even if the approach is different now, since she ended her contract with BMR- fans will know what, she still have the same objective: getting people's attention. and not because she is desperate, but because it's the path she chose for life, in what all her career is built around. it's also an artistic need: as an artist, you want to express yourself the best you can for people to look at you and fully understand you and your art. after many listens, I came up with this interpretation, there's so much more implicit messages, but the text is already too long hahaah. as a fan and an aspiring artist, I feel like this track is definitely one of my favorites from her, because I got this as a direct, raw, sincere and quite relatable message, hidden on this beautiful and perfect metaphor. a mirrorball.

I think "illicit affairs" could be in the Other Girl's perspective, she's talking about how it is to be in an illicit affair with somebody. It connects with the song "august" because in that song she says "meet me behind the mall" and in "illicit affairs" she says "what started in beautiful rooms ends with meetings in parking lots"... Back of the Mall a.k.a Parking lot. Again... Another sad song. Especially during the bridge when she says "you showed me colors you know i can't see with anyone else" and "you taught me a secret language i can't speak with anyone else".

So the song seven? I think its about Taylor being little and having a friend who (she now realizes as an adult) was probably being abused by the father. :( I see this song as her apology, asking that friend (who she lost touch with long ago) to see her as innocent, and also letting her old friend know she still thinks about her and loves her

Some people interpret the closet line as the friend being figuratively closeted sexuality wise and afraid of their abusive _and_ homophobic father, and others just take it literally as in the child is scared in their own house and hides in the closet for protection. Depending on the theory and explanation, I can see either being completely true. I think that it’s probably both, tbh. Whether this is based on reality or not.

The triangle involves Betty, James, and Augustine -James cheated on Betty with Augustine -Cardigan is from the perspective of Betty 30 years after(this occurred when they were teens) -August is from the perspective of Augustine -Betty is from the perspective of James -James says is Betty that “I’m only 17 I don’t know anything” but Betty says is Cardigan “when you are young they assume you know nothing” and “I knew everything when was young” -In cardigan, Betty is retelling the story that happened to her years prior. She describes the hurt she underwent, that she knew he’d come back to her after the excitement of the affair had worn out, and that being 17 isn’t an excuse for being stupid -In August, Augustine describes how she wanted James to be hers but he ended up leaving her for Betty and that she wasn’t the bad guy but James was bc he was the one with the gf -In Betty, James is apologizing to Betty and tries to get back with her after the summer thing(side note, Augustine calls it summer love and James calls it just a summer thing which is so sad) and he paints Augustine to be the bad guy -In Illicit Affairs, Augustine describes how much pain she feels as the mistress and how disgusted she is with herself that she is being used to cheat on someone and that it destroys her every time they interact -in peace, Betty accepts jame’s apology but that she’ll never forget what he did and that she’ll always remember the pain he caused no matter how much he apologizes

-cardigan is 20 years after, not 30. -illicit affairs is not part of the storyline of the triangle (the theme just fits the narrative, but it's not part of it) -again, peace is also not part of the storyline of the triangle (that's not even the meaning of the song at all) the only songs about it are august, betty and cardigan (ABC). Taylor herself said on folklore's release week that there are only 3 songs on the triangle, and she explores their meaning in folklore long pond studio sessions.

I really love the way she sings the 2nd half of the lines! 'When I'm screaming at the sky' & 'You hear my stollen lullabi-', these two lines sounding like an echo in the background and then her not completely saying lullabies as if she wasn't allowed to, keeping in mind that she was no longer could sing her previous songs cuz they were sold away, are just amazing details!
