She is talking about herself. She is also talking about how the way she treats other people comes back to haunt her. “I cut off my nose to spite my face” is a saying about a reaction to something that is self destructive. It’s usually a reaction intended to hurt someone else. And that’s why she hates her reflection for years and years, she regrets the way she acted because in the end it only ended up hurting herself.

I think the chorus where she sings “Who could ever leave me, darling ,but who could say” is so interesting. “who could ever leave me” - when she is the archer, she is confident in herself, thinking so highly of herself that she can’t believe anyone would ever dare to leave her. However, when she’s the prey, she thinks exactly the opposite - who would ever want to stay with someone like her? Just another example of Taylor’s supreme lyricism.

the song ends really unexpectedly and you keep wainting for a beatdrop in the whole song, just like the relationship she talks about in the song, you expect a lot of things, but they never happen, instead they end unexpectedly. so when she asks if the one she is singing to will stay, this person probably left her.

As Taylor liked a fans opinion in tumblr, this song is more likely about Taylor mostly blaming herself for everything when she's alone and these anxieties that got mentioned in the song are cause of those feelings.
@captainaaron965 жыл бұрын
I agree with this so much. This song is so groundbreaking because it opens up so much of Taylor that we've never seen before. Like without diagnosing anything of course since we're not psychologists but DAMN she opened us up to social isolation and loneliness, bullying, body image and self esteem issues, (potential clinical) anxiety stemming from her interactions. For me this is basically how my life has gone these past few years and it's so heartbreaking, this is a song I never knew I needed and knowing Taylor feels similarly and has accomplished so much gives me more hope that I can do the same for myself. That's also one of the reasons why I'm such a fan of Ryan Reynolds, Chris Evans and RDJ as they've been so open about their respective anxiety disorders as well.

The archer is by far the best release so far from Lover! Everything about it from the production to the vocals to the lyrics is the embodiment of what I love about Taylor. Unfortunately because of the way record labels and tracking work, commercial emptyish pop songs are the first singles to come out for a new album most of the time. However, just because Taylor can make a somewhat mindless pop song like Me! does not mean she doesn’t still have some of the best writing ability in the game. I’m beyond excited for this album because I know it is full of more cuts like The Archer.

"I search for your dark side. But what I'm alright, right here?" She looks for their (presumably Joe's) dark side, like she might do something wrong that'll make him not like her, but she's wondering if maybe she's alright where she is, that she's safe and doesn't have to worry about him leaving her

So far this is my favourite from Lover. The build up, the lyrics, the production - all amazing. You kind of get this feel of a heartbeat in that second verse then in all keeps building until that sudden cut off where the sound of it is to represent a bow being shot from an arrow. The song literally broke me, I was crying my eyes out especially when she says "I hate my reflection for years and years" because I have felt like that as well, especially with getting epilepsy caused by anxiety disorder when I was 17, like I did that to myself and it's a punishment I have for being so anxious when I was younger.

*"But who could stay?"* That. That little line means so many things for someone that struggles with anxiety and self esteem like myself. "Who could ever leave me?" I might think in a good day. But there's always that little voice telling me "Who could stay?"... Beautiful song, my most streamed song of 2019.
