On “Midnights,” the last line in “Hits Different” asks, “Is that your key in the door / Is it OK? / Is it you? / Or have they come to take me away?” To start off this album with "I was supposed to be sent away" breaks my brain.

You’re exactly right! This album is very fatalistic. Not just the lyrics but also the way she sings it, the pain or playfulness in her voice and the instrumentals paint the most gorgeous picture of her prolific songwriting. Thanks for doing this! Keep shining my guy✨🫶🏻

Taylor’s commentary for this song is that she and Posty were in a mental hospital being experimented on for two weeks (a fortnight). They end up in love with each other but, go their separate ways once they get out and both go on to marry others. Unbeknownst to both of them, Posty and his wife move into Taylor and her husband’s neighborhood. They both have to pretend that they don’t know each other but, Tay is jealous of his wife. Tay’s husband is a cheater so it’s extra hard not to run into Posty’s arms again. They only spend time together at the mailbox.

I always took this song to be that they had a whirlwind romance for 2 weeks that blew up and now something like 10 years later they’re both married to other people and happen to be next door neighbours but they never really stopped wanting each other, so “your wife waters flowers, I wanna kill her” is saying “you have such a perfect wife and I want to kill her because she gets to be with you and I don’t” and then in the second chorus adding “my husband is cheating” to it makes it worse because she’s saying all this has happened and you have a good wife but I have a bad husband and I’m so angry at the whole situation. “I love you it’s ruining my life” also plays into that. Having to still love you when we’re both married to other people and seeing you every day with her is killing me

She has Amazon intros: Fortnight- In an Amazon Music commentary, Swift said the album’s opening song “Fortnight”, a team-up with Post Malone, “exhibits a lot of the common themes that run throughout this album, one of which being fatalism, longing, pining away, lost dreams.” “I think it’s a very fatalistic album in that there are lots of very dramatic lines about life or death and I love you, it’s ruining my life. These are very hyperbolic, dramatic things to say,” she noted. “But it’s that kind of album - it’s about a dramatic, artistic, tragic kind of take on love and loss.” She said she “always imagined” that “Fortnight” occurred in an “American town where the American Dream you thought would happen to you didn’t.” “You ended up not with the person you loved and now you have to just live with that every day, wondering what would’ve been, maybe seeing them out,” she explained. “And that’s a pretty tragic concept, really. So I was just writing from that perspective.”

I think the “ask about the weather, now you’re in my backyard, turned into good neighbors” or “at the mailbox” is painting an image of proximity after a relationship… this isn’t just someone you’re bumping into. This is someone whose proximity is forcing cordial behavior and yet underneath the surface the jealousy is brewing. The world buildings so interesting, there’s a whole film here.

For knowing no lore and analysis you nailed it. She did describe this album as “fatalist”. You got it. It’s about her being with someone for a small amount of time, it not working out and she never got over them. But life went on. And the ex lovers life seems perfect (your wife waters flowers) hers is shit (my husband is cheating). Miracle move on drug is getting with someone to get over someone else; a rebound.

It ABSOLUTELY is an art piece, versus a traditional radio and chart focus album. For the story telling/truth telling, I would love to see you react to The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived. Arguably the best bridge/outro she's ever written. And for some fun, light-heartedness, I'd recommend So High School. If you're anywhere in or near your 30s, it will give you big nostalgia, early 00s pop-rock feel.

I know you said the band is super busy so you don’t have a ton of extra time, but I would absolutely love to hear you break down the whole album a song at a time (even if it takes months and you have to go slow) because it’s honestly really cool to hear a working songwriter who understands lyrical structure and storytelling (and also album concepts) talk through this. Even without an “insider” Swiftie perspective, you caught so many nuances in this song (and what you predict happens next) that demonstrate the craft of the album. It’s very interesting. There are lots of cool details in this song (and in the music video) that function as hyperbole and metaphor (but you’re right, ALSO some autobiographical details). The car metaphor in this album (which carries over from previous albums fascinates me).

There are a million callbacks to other songs in the discography. It’s been so fun to find them. Last verse of “Hits Different” from Midnights: I heard your key turn in the door down the hallway Is that your key in the door? Is it okay? Is it you? ***Or have they come to take me away?*** To take me away ALSO - Maybe unpopular opinion, but I think a lot of songs on this album aren’t about one single person, and it kind of makes me sad how hard a lot of Swifties are trying to *make* it about that.

You need to do the entire album because as you say there are plenty Easter eggs that you don’t really get given your interest in her life relationships. There are parts of her history that if you did know the lore would help you understand the album fully but you don’t necessarily need to know all of it, some of the songs are quite telling some are not. Obviously Swifties know exactly who every song is about, non Swifties might know some but definitely not all. I won’t spoil it by telling you, but you will probably recall certain headlines that blighted Taylor when they were actually happening. Taylor has said publicly, this is an album “she needed to write”, if she wants to move on and empty her head of all the drama of the past. That’s exactly what she has done with this album, it’s therapy for her and no doubt many will relate. It’s not all doom and gloom though, there is some fantasy or comedy although it is a bit dark, Guilty As Sin and Thank You Aimee are two. I’m looking forward to seeing you stroll through the album❣️

Before finishing mine I watched a bunch of Fortnight reactions and yours wasn't up yet at the time. I'm so glad yours is up now because you're actually paying attention to the lyrics and that's what I live for! You have some great insights... I love the idea of forbidden love right at the start, haven't seen anyone else mentioning that interpretation but it makes perfect sense, especially in light of "But Daddy I Love Him" how forbidden it felt for her to have all these feelings for him, on so many levels... I keep getting more and more insights about this song even after posting my 1 hr video on it!

It's not *about* Clara Bow, it's Taylor drawing parallels between her life, her hopes, & her fears and Clara Bow's life. This song is essentially Taylor saying that her biggest fear is ending up like Clara and playing out in her head the outcome if she stays comfortable instead of taking a risk. It was her finally realizing that staying comfortable is scarier than taking a risk.

News broke out in the media that Taylor and her long time partner of six years had broken up, and that was around the time she was touring in Florida. Agreed. I feel like this definitely song is related to “Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”. Same person but we get more detail on the second half of the album. It’s kinda like the love Trilogy from Evermore but with 5 songs. I honestly didn’t think there’d be so many songs about Matty. I know they were talking since 2014 (and she was probably falling into more of a loving relationship but she was still with Joe. After she’s finally free of Joe dragging her down “Fresh out the slammer” she called Matty but she didn’t know who he had become in that 10 year only talking relationship. Just my thoughts about how it may have happened. Only the 3 of them (and their friends) know what truly happened. The one line get me though “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary” does seem like she went to bed with a different gut to help her forget about him? She doesn’t seem like she’d do that. I hiope that’s hyperbole as well. Neither of the two men have wives so maybe it wasn’t a fling but a chemical reaction drug 🍃?? I need help with that line. 😂🙈 Tracks that make sense to me for their relationship start to finish. #9, 7, 6, 11, 8

Personally i think the part where she switches the words to comment on my sweater and my husband is cheating i wanna kill him is the (water flowering wife) seeing Taylor at the mailbox and saying that to Taylor. Cause a man is not gonna usually comment on sweaters and clothes like that. That is usually a woman to woman kinda thing. I don't know just my theory.

This song is kind of the same as the lyric on the back of a book. It gives you a taste of the full story and the rest is explained through the rest of the songs of the album

I wanted to add some information and observations, but there might be some spoilers of the other album tracks. So if you want to listen to the album first, do not read the following: Disclaimer: This is my own interpretation and what I picked up on. The theme of the "tortured poets" is quite unserious, self-aware, and hyperbolic, and it is pretty much showcased and explained in the title track: "You're not Dylan Thomas and I'm not Patti Smith. This ain't the Chelsea Hotel. We're two modern idiots." (Dylan Thomas was a Welsh writer of the 20th century, Patti Smith is a singer-songwriter and poet, and the Chelsea Hotel has been renowned for housing a lot of writers, musicians, and other artists.). Creating a fictional department for the "tortured poets" is her way of visualising how she, the industry, and the public perceive her and other artists, all being part of this "department" which makes their role as artists feel very bureaucratic and consumeristic (especially when they are riddled by heartbreaks, mental health issues, and such). If you watch the teaser from before TTPD was released, she shows a university, police, or legal department (despite the fact that some people say it's a psychiatric ward - that's definitely the case in "Fortnight", but not in that teaser. Don't get me wrong, she also alludes about "feeling/being insane" both in songs and in the epilogue.). In fact, not to spoil too much about the album, she does make some references to this whole theme by mentioning death and murder (unseriously.. hopefully) multiple times, and to the justice and legal systems. This album not only is about her romantic life struggles, but also about fame and all the attention she gets from the public who are always hungry for gossip. However, she also alludes to the actual "tortured poets" of the Romantic period. But she defies your expectations by being brutally honest, very self-aware, and humorous. She's not a tortured poet nor she'd like to live in that era. On the other hand, there is a magical, mystical, and fatalistic aspect of the album (perhaps mostly in the second half) where she relies on sorceresses and psychics to undo what cannot be avoided (and that perhaps is the most Romantic she gets in this album). She believes some things are just meant to happen and end, and she often shows her insecurity about it.

How I interpret this song is she’s looking into the future kind of cynically. “for a fortnight there we were forever” so they could have been together for two weeks or during the relationship there was two solid weeks where they thought it would work out and be together forever then she says “run into you sometimes ask about the weather” so they exchange small talk after the fact when they run into one another. “Now you’re in my backyard, turned into good neighbors, your wife waters flowers I wanna k!ll her.” So she’s talking about the future and this person she once loved is now married and her neighbor, and she sees his wife in the yard watering flowers and she can’t help but still get jealous. Then the “I love you, it’s ruining my life” is about how she can’t move on, in the story it’s been years since they were together and in love but she still says I love you instead of I loved you and it’s ruining her life because it’s all she can think about and she’s tortured by seeing him moved on. And she alludes to never being able to find someone better when she says “my husband is cheating, I wanna k!ll him” so the person she ended up with forever doesn’t treat her right. At least that’s how I interpreted the song!

Oh, I love everybody’s comments. Here we all have our theories about who this is about. But it’s also very sad. The whole album has a darkness to it but in a beautiful way. This individual we assume shows up throughout the entire anthology. But I remember her words at some point within this album and on the Eras Tpur, her dream is for her fans to take these songs and make it into their own. I think that helps Taylor Swift fans./Swifties to try not to obsess about which specific person this is. Of course my assumption is Matty Healy from the 1975 lol. But it is a beautifully written album. I can’t wait to see what you think about the rest of the songs.🥂

She had a 2-week rebound relationship with Matty Healy of the 1975. This is song is about that. There is also a song on the album called The Smallest Man That Ever Lived is about him.
